fluff - baby!gumi waiting for up dad!toji to come home from work
“gumi. daddy’s coming home soon!”
megumi freezes from where he is currently playing (eating his blocks) in the middle of the living room floor. he is currently in the baby-toddler phase where he currently bears a shockingly similar resemblance to a little dumpling. with his round cheeks, belly and little legs poking out from beneath his froggie shorts.
one of his hands is clutching a half-eaten strawberry whilst the other is clutching onto his prized frog stuffie.
his big green eyes slowly widen.
“mhm.” you glance at the time on your phone. “daddy should be home very, very soon.”
megumi abandons his toys and charges (toddles) towards the front door with one focus, or rather person, in mind.
“baby, he’s not here yet.”
megumi plops himself down directly in front of it.
you stare at him. he stares back. utterly undettered.
“yes, dada. but not for another probably ten minutes.”
you grab your phone to collect evidence of this ridiculous favouritism. you were the one who birthed him, who breastfed him and suffered through him lightly nipping on your nipples. but nope. of course, he likes toji more.
“megumi,” you whisper from behind the camera. “gumiiiiiii…”
he turns to looks at you, unimpressed (probably because you’re not daddy).
“who are you waiting for?”
megumi immediately looks back at the door. you nearly cackle aloud from how mussed his hair is and he resembles a sea urchin with his little hair spikes poking in all directions.
“look at this little urchin waiting for his daddy,” you narrate quietly. “he’s been abandoned. neglected. fatherless for approximately nine hours. poor little baby.”
“yes, baby, daddy’s at work. we’ve clarified this about ten times already. but what’s the harm in the eleventh?”
you stifle a laugh, “what?”
you burst out laughing so hard you almost fall onto your sides. apparently toji’s ‘very serious’ lectures explaining daddy has to go to work because daddy has to make money every morning has really stuck to the little dumpling.
“yes, baby. daddy went to make money.”
megumi nods. sometimes you wonder how a little baby can behave more mature than a 30 year old man…
finally, after what feels like centuries and millennias of waiting (it’s been 13 minutes), there is the unmistakable scrape of a key entering the lock.
you barely manage to relift your phone to record him.
the door opens. and megumi absolutely loses his mind.
toji barely gets one foot through the doorway before a tiny human launches himself forward at maximum toddler speed - faster than the speed of light.
toji drops his work bag just in time for megumi to crash directly into his leg.
“dada! dada! dada! dada!”
toji bends down with a grunt and scoops him up with one arm. “miss me or somethin’?”
megumi has both round arms around his neck, nuzzling his little face into toji's muscly neck. “dada work.”
“dada mak money. no money no food.”
toji slowly looks at you. you’re already wheezing behind the camera.
“hey, you were the one who taught him that,” you manage.
“financial literacy is very important. i’m being a good father by making sure he knows how to not be poor and to 'mak' money.”
before toji can answer, gumi grabs his dad’s face with both hands and smooshes toji’s chiselled cheeks into a mush of skin.
megumi beams that signature little smile. the one that could get him away with anything.
toji’s entire face softens in a way that makes you want to poop rainbows and vomit glitter and fluff.
“yeah,” he murmurs. “daddy’s home.”
megumi immediately starts babbling about his ‘extremely busy’ day, where approximately seventy percent of the content is incomprehensible.
“mama nana. den stwawb’y. buh birdie out dere. twy eat stwawb’y. mama hit wif big stick and kill.”
(you merely shooed the bird away with your hand).
you stare at your husband. toji only smirks at you.
megumi, on the other hand, looks delighted with himself.
“great,” you mutter. “fantastic. wonderful. stupendous!”
“are we playing spelling bee now?”
“shut up. you’ve been here forty seconds and now he’s picked up a new swear word.”
toji’s mouth twitches, “what can i say? the kid’s smart.”
“the kid’s copying his annoying father.”
you finally stop recording just so you can smack his arm. (and to give toji his welcome home kiss).
