Season Two, Episode Two “Carbon Creek”

one year “to the day” since T’pol joined Enterprise - the longest any vulcan has served on a human ship

Carbon Creek, Pennsylvania (site of “first contact”)

in the 1950s, vulcans were sent to observe the launch of earth’s first satellite, but they crash land on the planet.

sputnik was nearly 200 years ago. how old is T’pol? nearly a century??

vulcans walking amongst humans undetected, observing small-town america (white america...)

how did this vulcan pick up on this game of pool so quickly are like all vulcans just canonically good at human games that’s so cute

they actually assimilate into human culture secretly, like they get jobs and a house wow 

vulcans knew of tellarites by 1950 (in earth years) “a Tellarite freighter picked up your signal”

Vulcans invented velcro.

Summary: T’pol tells Trip and Archer a story about her great-grandmother who crashed to earth and had to stay there undercover for a few years with two of her surviving crew mates. Eventually they are rescued but one decides behind and “study earth culture.” Trip and Archer from believe T’pol.

Season Two, Episode One “Shockwave Part 2″

“An organization, the Federation. It doesn’t exist to you yet.”

“The Romulan Star Empire, what’s that?”

people in the 31st century still know HG Wells

We keep switching from the 31st to the 22nd centuries

Humans and Vulcans working in space is bureaucratic nightmare

Daniels learns how to send information through time in high school. 31st century is weird.

Vulcans still don’t want humans in deep space

“Centuries of savage conflict” - vulcans are hypocrites  

Summary: Daniels and Archer figure out how to send a message back through time, an use the suliban tech against them in order to bring Archer back to his time to help form the Federation. They manage to escape capture and convince the vulcans to allow the Enterprise NX-01 to continue its mission.

Season One, Episode Twenty-Six “Shockwave Part 1″

“We’re making history with every light year”

“People back home think we’re doing nothing but getting in trouble!”

“This has gotta be the first time a vulcan has tried to comfort a human”

Enterprise is visiting an alien colony “a matriarchal society” though the males are making strides for gender equality 

It’s a mining colony and the atmosphere was ignited...3600 people died in an instant. 

Aliens attempting to understand humans under the effects of their emotions (guilt especially)

the vulcans concluded that “we [humanity] need another 10 or 20 years and we can try again”

EARTH! Skyscrapers (presumably all apartments) and low flying crafts

10 months in space...

Daniels returns...that time travelling starfleet officer from the temporal war 

EARTH! Again! But it’s destroyed and in the 31st century. Time travel is dangerous and complicated. 

Summary: the suliban are again trying to destroy humanity’s attempts to go to space, this time by seriously altering the timeline to blame enterprise for a disaster. Archer once again meets the time traveller Daniels and he helps to restore the timeline. However when Daniels brings Archer to the 31st century, they find earth long destroyed - presumably by the suliban.

Season One, Episode Twenty-Five “Two Days and Two Nights”

“Have you ever been to an alien hospital?” “Yes, in San Fransisco”

Feb 18th, 2152 finally shore leave! But half the crew had to stay behind (drew lots)

Dr. Phlox has to hibernate for two days

Malcom & Tucker are being Las Vegas skeezes, while Archer is living his Nights in Rodanthe fantasy 

Hoshi is a flipping GENIUS! she learned an alien language in like, a day! She speaks 40 languages!

No one knows about Earth yet, we’re too new to the galactic neighbourhood

90 lightyears from home - the farthest any humans have been from home

The suliban take their orders from the far future, and no one knows where they come from

Summary: The crew finally get to go on shore leave, Malcom and Tucker meet shapeshifting aliens who try to seduce them in order to rob them; Archer makes friends with an alien who tells him the Suliban killed her family and tries to get archer to help her get revenge. Mayweather goes rock climbing but breaks his leg and Hoshi meets a handsome alien and gets laid. Plus learns a new language.

Season One, Episode Twenty-Four “Desert Crossing”

“Captains personal log, February 12th, 2152″

“Do you answer every distress call you pick up?” “We do what we can” “The galaxy could use more people like you”

Starfleet is still such a faraway dream...

So many aliens in this show could use a redesign. These desert aliens are played play tall deep voiced actors but i feel like they should look like hulking thick-skinned elephant people...like Lilo & Stitch? 

He knows of the Suliban! “Interesting people, don’t you think?” The politics of a planet and the involvement of aliens

Summary: So the enterprise is still trying to get shore leave but they are once again side tracked by a distress call. The man they save is eternally grateful and invites Archer and Tucker to dine with him. They do but discover that by accepting the dinner they have unknowingly picked sides in a political war on this planet. Enterprise learns about the complicated structures of space politics.

Season One, Episode Twenty-Three “Fallen Hero”

“It’s my understanding that your mating ritual is effective in easing tension”

“Efficiency is down 10%”

“This may come as a shock Jonathan but...the vulcans aren’t talking” “Imagine that.”

“They’re our emotions as well. We simply hide them better”

“It’s uncommon for a vulcan to commit a crime”

“Vulcans don’t have heroes”

“It’s called a warp 5 ship” “On paper!”

“Captains Starlog, February 9th 2152″ 

T’pol take the enterprise to PROSTITUTION PLANET 

Planet vulcan has representatives and ambassadors on hundreds of planets already 

how can a vulcan know the term “spartan?” what a nerd.

Ambasadir V’lar - short old lady i love her - she’s trying to accustom to humanity 

she’s tried to negotiate peace between Andorians and Vulcans, how long have they been at war? Before First Contact with Earth! Shady!

Vulcans don’t trust humans and humanity resents this

How far can the Enterprise NX-01 be pushed in terms of warp capability 

Summary: The enterprise must help Vulcan ambassador V’lar to safely escape unlawful prosecution but we’re growing tired of being in the dark when it comes to vulcan politics

Season One, Episode Twenty-Two “Vox Sola”

“I am the ranking officer here” “Not in my sickbay.”

“I hold you to a high standard because I know you’re capable of achieving it”

“Captains Starlog” -so close...

Taking onboard aliens and being unable to communicate 

alien parasites! Aliens invasions! Monsters!

Xenolinguistics is ridiculous 

“Brown dwarf system...looks interesting” they just pick places to explore at random! 

The ship has a games room

Movie Night “The Wages of Fear” (1953)

Archer and Trip are actually watching a water polo match. Earth water polo. 

Is this the first real redshirt death? No? Hm. 

Archer and Trip help investigate - off duty and a little drunk (in civilian clothes!)

“Interspecies ethics”

the aliens from the beginning learned out language on their own and demand an apology because the humans were eating and to them it’s like an orgy!

Mayweather saves the day <3 

Summary: The enterprise make first contact with a new species but immediately insult them. As they figure out why, an alien parasite makes its way onboard from the other ship and begins assimilating crew members. Eventually the other aliens return demanding an apology and the enterprise asks them where the parasite came from. It’s actually a super intelligent creature that makes up 100% of the intelligent life on its planet, and is basically holding the crew hostage until it was returned home. This planet is clearly home to intelligent and communicable life but it’s so otherworldly that the crew has no choice but to leave it alone. Is this the last we see of this creature?

Season One, Episode Twenty-One “Detained”

“What species are you?” “We’re human” “Never heard of it.”

Travis has been kidnapped! And the captain. But Travis!!!

Jailbreak ep

accidentally wandering into war zones and getting into trouble  

Suliban aren’t all bad! 

there are generations of suliban families in this prison (”internment camp/detention centre”) 

most suliban are nomadic, but some have assimilated into other cultures

Summary: Archer and Mayweather wake up in a prison cell and are told they and their shuttlepod have been detained for invading a war zone. Eventually the two discover they are in an internment camp for the suliban...and their families. Enterprise learns more of the so called “enemy” and helps them escape.

Encountering more unfamiliar aliens, and comparing food and technology in a very relaxed environment

Space. Ghost. Story.

An alien meeting a dog how wild 

The enterprise is literally just wandering around with no end goal at this point

Summary: The enterprise investigate a rumoured ghost ship, and discover the wreckage site has been turned into a survivors camp. They’ve been they’re for 23 years, the old man and his daughter. He didn’t want her to grow up alone so he created artificial lifeforms out of holograms and in his guilt recreated the victims of the crash. Meeting the enterprise allowed Ezral to understand his guilt and they helped him finally go back to his home planet.

Season One, Episode Nineteen “Acquisition”

“This is an exploration ship, not a cargo ship. We don’t do any commerce.”

Ferengi! Such a dramatic opening, omg. Ferengi space pirates

We can’t understand their language yet

Ever-present threat of danger on the enterprise

Have the vulcans met the ferengi yet? have they told the humans about it?

UV light room in the medical wing

This episode is literally just Trip running around in his undies while the ferengi strip the enterprise apart and babble incoherently 

...omg they group the women with the other cargo their stealing...

So the enterprise doesn’t do commerce, but humans still do? We’ve seen cargo ships already, so do people still use money? Was the enterprise expensive? Do people have paycheques? 

SLAVE MARKET?! 

Ferengi represent the violent opposite of humanity, and Archer recognizes that in them, “that kind of thinking almost destroyed my species.”

but at the same time they are still individual people...yanno?

Trip fights dirty. Ferengi are freaky. Vulcans are sneaky. 

Summary: In the most dramatic opening so far, the episode starts with the entire crew of the enterprise passed out on the floor. They’ve been boarded by space pirates! So it’s earth’s first encounter with ferengi, and it’s not a pleasant one. Trip saves the day by pitting the pirates against once another until they fell apart and left.

Season One, Episode Eighteen “Rogue Planet”

Vulcans mummify their honoured dead

a rogue planet with no lights so the night sky is always out and bright

boy scouts still exist

(Archer says hunting went out of style 100 years ago but really? Honestly? I don’t believe it.)

Summary: The crew stumble upon a rare find - a rogue planet (no main light source) drifts into view and they discover it is actually teaming with life. They decide to explore and meet a group of aliens who explain how their species have been using the planet as a hunting ground for generations. Archer discovers that the most prized creature is actually an intelligent psychic being, and the enterprise learns a lesson in assuming sentience only exists in our limited terms.

Listen, I know that Discovery legally can’t mention Sybok bc since he was created in a movie instead of a show, he’s Paramount’s intellectual property not CBS’s, and I even know that his family not mentioning him works with his backstory (at least from the novelization of TFF, I haven’t actually seen the movie), since he was banished and disowned because he performed a nonconsensual mind meld so it’s not like they’d want to talk about him much, BUT

It’s really funny to pretend that Sarek just really is the galaxy’s worst dad and just straight up forgot Sybok

Season One, Episode Seventeen “Fusion”

Civilian Vulcans! To show that the species is more diverse in thought

rebelling against high command

“Vulcans without logic” - who do not repress their emotions...whoa

“Nearly a third of the crew” is female on Enterprise NX-01

Interaction between vulcans and humans is still in its infancy - we’re wary of each other

“Propaganda from five thousand years ago” the dangers of embracing emotions

“Your species does have a reputation” human history of violence

Vulcans interacting with human customs (music, art, etc)

Summary: The Enterprise house a few lost vulcans who reveal themselves to be living with emotions. T’pol finds them dangerous but the crew encourages her to learn from them. She attempts to embrace the more primitive side of herself but it turns out her initial assumptions were correct
