Hereby posting my pinch hitter for @astrodances for the @startrekwintergiftexchange !
I hope you like it!! I had so much fun with this. I imagined the aliens to be classic star trek aliens, in that they were like these Californian actors with slightly green makeup and dressed in some robes lol!
And Pike and Ortegas really bonded, but Pike's mysterious future remains a barrier to him opening up to people.
A new understanding - Japhan2025 - Star Trek [Archive of Our Own]
I was a pinch hitter for this year's @startrekwintergiftexchange and I'm stepping up to the plate for @agent-troi ! I hope you enjoy!
The request was for tng-era Picard/Crusher, so this is set just after season 7 episode 8, Attached as I remembered it being a great episode for them. Although on a rewatch, they have a lot of spectacularly charged moments tbh. Happy (belated) gift exchange!
"And now we're friends," they'd said. But it didn't feel quite right to either of them; Beverly knew it felt wrong to him too because of the psychic link that had been developing between them.
Maybe not wrong, per se. They were friends after all; he was one of her closest friends on the Enterprise, and certainly the person aboard who'd known her the longest.
But friendship wasn't all there was between them. Even if it was just potential, there was something else there. No matter how deep Jean-Luc tried to bury it.
They were so focused on escape after they awoke, so they didn't have time to discuss that revelation by the firelight the night before.
Once they were back on the ship, they had too much to do as well. So more than a whole day had passed before they could say anything about it, and in the meantime the link was severed. It made an odd sort of absence.
She and Jean-Luc did finally discuss that moment in the firelight after their dinner together, but barely. Beverly had turned him down, and she walked away.
And she was still walking. Wandering the cooridors of the Enterprise, not quite making it to her own quarters yet.
She could go see Deanna. If anyone could understand some complications from being in someone else's head, it would certainly be her. Plus, she was always willing to listen to Beverly, and vice versa.
But this didn't quite seem like something to bring to her. Beverly needed to figure this out on her own.
There were certainly reasons why it may not be the best idea. She and Jean-Luc had both loved and lost before, and each carried their own sort of wariness from it. The most recent instance wasn't even that long ago for him.
But even when they'd been with others, there was always something between them. The certain way they acted towards whoever the other was seeing, part protectiveness of a friend, but perhaps some jealousy as well.
But those relationships hadn't lasted for various reasons. Several of Jean-Luc's had ended because of his dedication to duty above all else. She admired that dedication in him, but what if it came between them?
Of course, she was hardly that different in that respect. Beverly had a great sense of responsibility when it came to her work as well, even to a degree that led to her and Jean-Luc butting heads on occasion.
But they'd been able to figure it out each of those times, and maintain their friendship. So maybe if this didn't work out, they could come out of it friends still.
Would she regret it, if all she did was walk away?
Perhaps some part of her had decided, because she was back outside Jean-Luc's door.
She pressed the call button, then waited. After a moment, Jean-Luc opened the door.
He looked a bit wary. "Why are you here, Beverly?"
She tried to smile disarmingly. "I suppose I'm not quite used to being away from you yet. Could I come in?"
After a moment, he stepped aside to let her in, still looking cautious. "Not that you are unwelcome, but what are you doing here?"
"I've been rethinking our earlier conversation." She sat on the sofa and turned to face him when he joined her. "Rethinking what you...what you proposed."
"Oh?" He was so close to her, just like before.
Beverly took a deep breath. "I'm still a bit afraid." She looked up to look him in the eye. "Neither of us has the best record with this. I've lost the man I care about before, with Odan, with Jack..."
His hand gently covered hers. "And you were not alone in those losses. But we would not be who we are without the losses we have endured."
"True." She shifted her hand to hold his loosely. "And what about you, Jean-Luc? You pull away, keep yourself from getting too attached. I've seen it."
"I have already said I think this is not something to be afraid of." His gaze was steady.
"Perhaps not now." She met his eyes. "But I remember how it was with Nella. As soon as she was in danger, you practically fell apart."
He stiffened slightly. "Beverly—"
"And I won't stop my duties to ease your mind." Her hand tightened on his. "Saving lives is important to me, Jean-Luc, you know that."
"I do, and I admire that about you." He squeezed her hand back. "I would not ask you to give up what you do any more than I would expect you to ask that of me."
She sighed. "The last time you dated someone under your command, it led to a breakup and a transfer." She met his eyes again. "I don’t want to leave the Enterprise; I've built a life here just as you have."
"Our friendship has survived worse trials than this." His voice was soft. "Surely if this does not work out, it could weather this too?"
It was quiet a moment, just their breathing and the low background hum of the ship.
"I think I would like to try." Their faces were so close now. Beverly let it sit in the air a moment, almost feeling his breath on her lips.
"But," his voice was quiet, as if he too was afraid to break the moment, "you would like to take it slow?"
She smiled. "You sure you're out of my mind?"
"Quite." He smiled in return. "I've been missing your sarcastic comments all day."
That surprised a laugh from her. "I'll have to share them with you more often to make up for it."
"I'd like that." His eyes crinkled with his smile and she felt herself pulled a little closer, their faces so close she had to look between his eyes instead of both at once now.
Deciding not to resist the pull, she let herself close the distance, this time meeting his lips rather than his cheek.
It was gentle, and not much more than lips meeting lips, but it was perfect.
She couldn't help her smile when she pulled back. He had that funny sort of expression on his face, that flustered sort of look he always got when someone flirted with him. She found it endearing. "So."
"So." Jean-Luc took a breath, regaining his composure.
"Coffee and croissants in the morning?" She shifted, not fully out of his space but enough that she couldn't quite feel his warmth anymore. She missed it. "And then maybe dancing in the holosuite after our shift?"
He smiled that eye-crinkling smile once more. "I'd like that."
"Good." She stood up slowly, her hand lingering in his where they'd been holding each other. "I'll see you in the morning."
"See you in the morning." He stood to watch her go. "Sleep well."
"You too." She lingered a moment in the doorway. "Good night, Jean-Luc."
"Good night, Beverly." She looked back one more time before walking out the doors, back into the cooridors of the Enterprise.
But unlike the confusion of before, now something inside her felt settled, right. And perhaps a bit excited as well.
1. If you never received your gift, please let us know! We had quite a few people drop out or ghost me, and I'm trying to get everyone a gift, so it's helpful to know who never got theirs. (We're not always tagged in posts, but I desperately try to track them all down.
2. If you're willing to pinch hit to get these last gifts created, please let us know!
3. I know this is 4 months late at this point, which I sincerely apologize for! Health issues, then surgery knocked me out of commission for a bit. I'm back, but this Exchange is a lot of work, so if anyone wants to help me make the next one happen, let me know!

There was nothing too sappy about this, Bones decided, given the circumstances...
After all, if married folks weren't allowed a little love, who was?
"You're never gonna get him a right foot, Jim," he calls from the settee, lazily swirling his brandy in its snifter.
Jim furrows his brow and readjusted his grips around Spock's waist and hand. "Hush now, you're distracting my student."
There goes that eyebrow again. Bones smiles into his glass at the look on Spock's face, beautifully patient, yet to a point of detriment if he has any opinion about it. Bones almost pities the ridiculous, sacrificial love Spock seems to have for Jim. Their husband would have gotten about half a second of trying to "teach" Bones to dance before he'd have left Jim with a swift swat the the shoulder and a colorful reprimand for the ages.
"Jimmy, darlin'. This might be the saddest attempt at anything I have ever witnessed. I can't even blame the Vulcan on this one."
"Watch it, Bones," Jim says sweetly from over Spock's stiff shoulder, "or that Klingon opera that you so love is going on next."
Bones glares back and mutters under his breath. That damn wailing should have been burned and banished from his home ages ago.
He sits and watches Jim drag Spock around the room for a few more aching minutes, before he's had enough and decides he needs to step in, for the good of everyone. "You two look like an alligator and a crocodile trying to mate in winter," he grumbles as he stands and crosses their living room. He inserts himself swiftly in between the two before Jim can try dipping the man, God help them, and puts his back to Jim while casting an apologetic look upward to Spock. Jim huffs behind him and Bones can easily imagine the indignant hands he's put on his hips.
He takes Spock's hand and brings it up to his glass, resting their fingers together for a moment as he leans up to press a light kiss against Spock's lips.
"Run. I'll handle the beast," he says conspiratorially, smirking along with Spock at Jim's noise of protest behind them.
Spock grazes their fingers together one more time before taking off with Bones' glass, a bit faster than his usual gait, Bones reckons. As Spock busies himself at the sideboard Bones turns back around to his other partner, and rolls his eyes at his pout.
"Come on, Jim," he says with a fond sigh. He takes one of Jim's hands and brings it to rest on his shoulder, grabbing onto his waist and his free hand gently. "Let me show you how it's done."
Hi! I was just wondering, if we haven't gotten our gift yet, at what point should we let you know?
We have about a dozen folks who have needed extra time on their gifts. I've been keeping track of whose gifts have been posted, but if you haven't received your gift by March 14, please let me know!
For @73chn1c0l0rr3vel, a silly fic where Una struggles to find a movie for her date with M'Benga.
“Listen. Listen!” Una cried as she hurried down the Enterprise corridor after Joseph M'Benga. “You don’t have to sing along, I promise.”
The CMO laughed but did not slow down. “Nothing doing, boss, I may like spending time with you, but Messrs Gilbert and Sullivan cannot be invited.”
“Oh, alright. I’ll let them know.”
Finally he let her catch up. They stook next to each other waiting for the lift to arrive. Even though it was allowed by Starfleet for two senior officers to date, Una still felt uncomfortable with other people knowing, so she didn’t link arms with him, even though she wanted to.
Una didn’t consider their relationship to be very serious, at least not yet, but she was having fun. Even taking into account his regrettable lack of appreciation for her beloved operettas. It did make planning a movie night more difficult, but she would persevere!
“I can bring the movie again,” he suggested.
“No, no, I can find something! It’s my turn.”
He smiled his beautiful smile at her. “If you insist.”
Una did insist. But that didn’t mean it would be easy.
Of course, Una enjoyed other genres of movie or program, but the ones she kept in her quarters on the Enterprise were all either things Joseph didn’t want to watch or things the two had already watched together. So she needed help.
/
“No.” Laan turned back to her station.
Una pouted at her friend’s severe braid. “Why not?”
“You know why not. I lent you my copy of Tchaikovskii’s On a Sunbeam, my favorite movie, and you lost it.”
Una sighed. “I know, and I’m sorry, and I bought you a replacement.”
“Yes, yes, but remember what else you said?”
“What did I say?”
“You said it was boring! You said you fell asleep halfway through.”
Oh right, she had said that. “It was a beautiful movie. I just think maybe it could have had more… dialogue?”
Laan laughed. “I’m not lending you another movie you won’t even like, Una. Find someone else.”
/
“… and finally, a copy of the 150th anniversary performance of Wicked on Broadway.”
“Wow,” said Una. She stared at Uhura’s beautifully organized box of film cards. Nyota watched her with excited anticipation, obviously proud of her collection: several dozen movies, almost all in a variety of languages Una didn’t understand.
“I’m just not sure I want something with subtitles,” Una confessed.
“Oh, most of them don’t have subtitles,” said Uhura brightly.
“That might be a problem… Is Wicked really the only English-language film you have?”
/
“How goes the quest?” Joseph asked over lunch in the mess room.
“It goes badly,” Una sighed. “But I will prevail!”
But after lunch Una found that Eria only had a handful of film cards, all about zombies for some reason. Christine was off the ship right now. And she wasn’t even going to approach Pelia.
There was only one person left to ask…
“Wait,” said Chris, turning off the water and drying his hands. “I’m not sure I heard you. What did you say?”
“Oh you absolutely heard me.”
He laughed. “Yes, but I want to hear you say it again.”
Una rolled her eyes. “Please, Chris, I need your help.”
“Music to my ears.”
“I need to borrow a movie for a date.”
“And you came to me… do you know how many years I’ve waited for this?”
“Chris, I swear…”
“Okay, okay,” Chris paused in cutting up a zucchini to point out where he kept his film cards. “Have a look through those.”
/
Finally it was time for their date. Joseph had brought dinner from the mess hall and was setting it out as Una arrived at his quarters.
“Successful?”
“Mmm, mess hall lasagna!” Una handed him the film card she had chosen.
Joseph squinted at the label. “2001: A Space Odyssey. Ah, a classic. I haven’t seen this one.”
“Oh, good. Neither have I. I’m hoping there aren’t any cowboys in it because Chris has… a shocking number of cowboy movies.”
In the end the lasagna was merely okay, but the movie was good. There were no cowboys, no singing, and more men in monkey suits than Una had been expecting.
“So, he’s a baby now?”
“I guess? I don’t know.”
“Huh.”
They stayed cuddled on the couch as the credits played. “I thought it was good,” said Una, “but you know what else I think?”
“What?”
“I think you’d better bring the movie next time. This was far too much work!”
Hey @jordanlafordan! Here's your @startrekwintergiftexchange gift from yours truly! This is an Ash Tyler Angst special. I will warn you, I got a little bit carried away with the angst. Just a bit. But I really enjoyed writing it, and I hope you enjoy reading!
Either way, have a lovely day.
