“C’mon, please?” Mark begs you, his bottom lip jutting out in a pout—and there he goes with those damn puppy eyes. Seriously, no man should be able to be this cute.
“Mark I just—I don’t know, I’m terrified of heights… I don’t think I can do this.” You explain once more with a shaky sigh, feeling your heart racing at just the idea of Mark taking you out flying.
Your two feet are planted on the soft grass of the small field the two of you are in—Mark himself hasn’t even lifted off an inch from the ground and you’re shaking. There’s a slight tremor in your hands and it honestly feels like your heart is going to beat out of your chest.
You’re scared of heights, okay? Everyone is scared of something…
You’re so lost in your own thoughts—all the terrible possibilities racing through your minds when Mark’s soft voice cuts through.
“Hey, hey…” His voice is soft as he speaks to you, his touch gentle as he takes your trembling hands into his own. His hands are steady—no ounce of fear in them, why would they? Flying is like breathing air to him.
“It’s okay, you’re okay.” He murmurs, his warm hand cupping your face, gently nudging you to meet his gaze. His eyes are warm, soft… the prettiest brown eyes you’ve probably ever seen and they’re just so loving that your heart melts.
Because he’s looking at you like that. With all that love and… god do you love this man.
“I promise you that nothing bad will happen, okay? I’ll be holding you the entire time—you won’t have to worry about anything.” His words are as reassuring as they can be.
You want to believe him, of course.
I mean, he told you his biggest secret, you’re dating… you have to trust him. Believe that nothing will happen.
“Just trust me, yeah? I’m—”
“Yeah, yeah you’re Invincible, we get it.” You cut him off with a small grumble, not being able to stop the laugh that falls from your lips at the scandalized look he gave you for stealing his ‘thunder’. Leave it to him to make you feel better just by being himself.
You didn’t even realize when you started smiling, but you couldn’t stop as you gazed at him.
Mark Grayson, a total dork… that loves you like there’s no tomorrow.
“... okay” you said with a small nod, “I can do this.”
The way that Mark just beams at that has you happy that you agreed. The smile on his face, the way his eyes shine even in the darkness of the night that envelops you.
“Really?” He asks with a grin and before you could even respond his arms are wrapped around your waist and he’s pulling you into a kiss.
It’s soft and sweet, like all your other kisses but there’s also something more to this. The trust that you have to put into Mark to agree to go flying with him, the gratefulness that is radiating off of him—so grateful that you could trust him in this way.
One of your hands finds its way to the hair at the nape of his neck, gently tangling with his black locks as you kiss.
And it’s only when you pull away, when you’re no longer so absorbed in what he is that you realize… you’re no longer standing on your two feet anymore.
“Mark,” a terrified squeak of his name leaves your lips as your arms wrap tightly around him, hiding your face in the nook of his neck as you squeeze your eyes shut.
Mark’s chest rumbles under your touch as a small laugh leaves his lips. “Sorry, sorry,” he mumbles, an amused grin on his lips even when you can’t see—you know it’s there. “In my defense,” he presses a kiss to your hair, “I didn’t even realize.”
“What do you mean you didn’t realize? You didn’t realize we were floating?” You ask, voice muffled from where you’re hiding. Your heart is racing once more, your arms trembling from where they’re tightly wrapped around him.
“I just,” he mumbles, “I was just… so happy, I didn’t realize that we were floating.”
Oh and what that does to your heart—he was so, consumed by you, so happy that he didn’t realize that he lifted the two of you off the ground.
“I hate you.” You grumble, which has him laughing once more. “No you don’t,” he’s quick to rebuttal, and he’s right. No you don’t
“Just keep your eyes closed, yeah? I’ll tell you when to open them.”
And you listen to him. You keep your eyes closed, face pressed into the nook of his neck. You’re flooded by the scent that is uniquely him. The natural scent that is him that’s mixed with the cologne that he started wearing after you mentioned it smelled good.
All of that and just being in his arms helps you relax.
Even though you know you’re flying in the air, feeling the way the cold wind jostles your hair as you get further and further from the ground.
It’s okay, because you’re with Mark.
It’s his small whisper of your name that breaks your focus.
“Babe,” his voice is soft as he speaks into your ear. The puffs of his breath tickle you and you feel goosebumps spread over your body because of that and what you know is to come. “Open your eyes.”
You squeeze your eyes shut tighter, arms tightening around him for a fraction of a second.
You peel your head away from where it had been pressed into the nook of his neck and you open your eyes.
You’re greeted by the familiar sight of Mark’s face, a grin on his face as he gazes back at you.
“Look,” he tells you, gesturing with a small tilt of his head.
And even though you’re absolutely terrified to turn your head and see just how far you’re off the ground, you listen to him.
And it feels like your breath was stolen right from your lungs.
You’re thousands of feet from the ground and yet, you’re not focusing on that.
You’re focused on the city below you, that’s completely oblivious to the two of you in the sky.
The city lights are like stars the way the twinkle below and it’s just a city… yet it’s so beautiful.
It’s not a sight that you have the privilege of seeing often, or if at all, and you can’t even explain the beauty of it.
It’s the same buildings you see every day, the same roads, the same parks, everything is the same.
And when you finally turn back to look at Mark, he just has that same dumb grin on his face. While you were admiring the view he was admiring you. And god did that make you feel things.
“Mark this…” Beautiful doesn’t feel like it justifies it, neither does gorgeous, spectacular maybe?
“I know.” Mark finishes for you instead. “Can’t even explain it, huh?”
“No… you can’t,” you murmur with a soft grin of your own.
“I knew you would like it, even with your fear of heights and all,” he explains to you, “I knew I had to show you. That’s why I kept bugging you about going flying with me. Wanted to share this with you.” And you swear he’s blushing by the way his words falter for a moment and the way his eyes glance away.
“I’m glad,” you murmur, “That you did. That you didn’t stop bugging me about it. It was scary… it still kinda is but… I feel better because I’m with you.” You feel stupid for the way you feel yourself getting emotional, tears gathering in your lower lashline, but you can’t stop it. It’s Mark.
Mark is quick to pepper your face with kisses, a happy laugh coming from him as he squeezes his arm around you for the smallest second.
“Me too,” he adds, pressing a final kiss to your forehead, “Really glad.”
The two of you bask in the moment before he speaks up again.
“So does this mean we can go higher?” He asks, already drifting the two of you higher in the night sky.
“Mark!” Your voice calls in alarm but a happy giggle also comes from you, a smile ever present on your face.
This time, your eyes are open, admiring the city below you as Mark takes the two of you further in the sky. A happy feeling is settled in your heart as the two of you fly through the night.
