This dead planet is subject to mysterious temporal and spatial anomalies. The people of Mahwé attempted a grand sound magic experiment. It failed, destroying the planet, weakening the Mahwé-Zezépfeni empire and leading to a war for independence. Mahwéan survivors on the planet’s moon, Pinaa, abstained from the war and remained isolated, protected by their AI.
𝘿𝙄𝘿 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒: Mahwé is a dead planet after a failed attempt at a grand sound magic experiment.

The Sauúti universe is a five-planet system orbiting a binary star: the two suns are called Zuúv’ah and Juah-āju. Juah-āju is the larger of the two stars. Orbited by the planets Órino-Rin and Ekwukwe.
𝘿𝙄𝘿 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒: A juzu, the Sauúti “year”, is the time it takes Juah-āju and Zuúv’ah to complete one orbit around their common centre of mass. A standard ‘day’ is called a bés.

Wiimb-ó: This Earth analogue has five continents, one of which is similar to Africa and called Aal’kebulaan. The planet has one visible moon named Javuiili. It is home to significant sites like Mara Gate, connecting the physical and spiritual realms.
𝘿𝙄𝘿 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒: Wiimb-ó has two invisible spirit moons, Vuiili-ku and Vuiili-ki, which affect those who are spiritually attuned.

This circumbinary planet of rapid seasonal changes, frequent meteor strikes and short, not-quite-dark nights is fortified by technology and magic. Its people believe they are the direct descendants of the original race. As the remaining half of the fallen Mahwé-Zezépfeni empire, its leaders help maintain a secret magical border, keeping something truly terrifying at bay.
𝘿𝙄𝘿 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒: Zezépfeni is the only planet to orbit the twin suns, Zuúv’ah and Juah-āju.

The Sauúti universe is a five-planet system orbiting a binary star: the two suns are called Zuúv’ah and Juah-āju. Zuúv’ah is the smaller of the two stars in the binary at the centre of the system. Orbited by the planets Mahwé and Wiimb-ó.
𝘿𝙄𝘿 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒: A cosmic event in Sauúti’s ancient past caused Zuúv’ah to be diminished in size.

This planet has an atmosphere which gets denser as you get closer to the surface, there is a point at which it becomes unsurvivable. Thanks to the dense surface atmosphere of the planet’s single, Pangea-like continent, everyone lives in the clouds, on giant mountains and hills. The atmosphere makes sounds amplified and resonant – Órino-Rin is always “singing”.
𝘿𝙄𝘿 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒: Órino-Rin is a ‘gas giant’ known for its sonic storms, which are mined for use in magic and technology.

Mahwé’s moon, Pinaa, has a thin atmosphere, low gravity, sparse vegetation and little species variation. The human and AI population live in fortified clusters. They avoid sound magic – since that is what destroyed Mahwé – preferring standard machines, signs and mathematical expressions.
𝘿𝙄𝘿 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒: Pinaa is the moon inhabited by the survivors of Mahwé after the destruction of the planet.

I was asked by fellow Sauúti collaborator, Eugen Bacon, to design the cover for the third volume of the British Science Fiction Association Fission anthology. We both wanted to infuse it with our own African influences, and with my ongoing research on various African writing systems, I played with the forms from Nsibidi. An opportunity to play with our own Africanfuturist iconography.
The fact that Eugen and co-editor, Gene Rowe (who have put together a stellar volume of stories!) were willing to venture into a more graphic cover design idea is a testament to this entire anthology.🚀💫❤️

As we inch closer to the crowdfunding launch (see below) and the publication of the MOTHERSOUND anthology (Android Press), the Sauúti Collective will be sharing their science-fantasy world with you, one planet, one moon, one sun (or two), and one story excerpt at a time.
Enjoy the Sauútiverse fact-cards...📖👀🔥🚀🪐
𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙋𝙇𝘼𝙉𝙀𝙏 𝙊𝙁 𝙀𝘾𝙃𝙊𝙀𝙎: 𝙀𝙠𝙬𝙪𝙠𝙬𝙚 (Planet)
This planet’s “hollow” surface, massive caverns and networks of holes and caves create echoes and strange phenomena on the planet. The human population, born with magical echoes as unique as fingerprints, is spread out through the caves. Ekwukwe is home to the wildest areas, rarest minerals, and strangest creatures in the system.
𝘿𝙄𝘿 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒: Ekwukwe is a planet of hollows and caverns and tunnels the size of countries which weave their way through its upper crust like it is a giant anthill.

'Languages of Water was born out of an experiment to explore how a particular story, and the conversations around it, can inspire other stories in different contexts . . . it’s a curious document that illustrates how speculative fiction in general and the burgeoning field of clifi in particular can unite writers across borders to inspire open conversation, collaboration, and community – the same vital tools we need to fight the ongoing climate crisis.'
–Archita Mittra, LOCUS MAGAZINE
The jam packed anthology "Languages of Water" is available! 📚❤️
In conjunction with isibheqe.org.za this is a visual representation of various African writing systems Pule kaJanolinji and I have been working on for the past few months. A continuous work in progress. Visit their site for more information and links to the respective syllabary projects.
The map depicts the array of ancient and modern writing forms found all over the continent, and some show the branches of origins. 📜 👀 ❤️
It is included in Pule’s August 2023 presentation:
UBUCIKO BOKULOBA: African Writing Systems as Creative Cultural Technologies
In respect to the modern scripts and syllabaries, it is vital the developers of those works get the support and recognition they need to continue and to produce creative language representations.
