UPC codes are like any other bar codes made up of numbers which are used in the United States of America. These bar codes are interpreted by the scanner and later on, the data is sent to the respective system. There are two types of bar codes – UPC - A or UPC - E bar codes. All the American products will have either of them.
To get into detail about these two barcodes, the UPC-A bar code consists of 12 digits, and a UPC - E bar code consists of 8 digits. In order to represent the various item codes so that they are easily identified from others, the upc codes which are numeric-only codes comes in different height, width and spacing that will help in representing various item codes. At the end of the code of the UPC codes, you will find that the last digit includes the checksum bar. It is said that this checksum bar is too complex to use as compared to other codes, but including it in the bar code is still considered to be a wise decision.
Like every other bar code software suites, even UPC code software suites have same style in which they include the entire font, templates and other options that will allow the user to generate a code as well as VBA functions for spreadsheets and database utility.
Again, similar to the other codes, even the UPC codes do not have the actual price of an item. Moreover, they are coded with the specific item code, where the software picks the value from the database consisting of all such related data.
A certain process needs to be followed by the manufacturer, if he wants to buy upc code for a new product. To buy UPC codes, he needs to get a manufacturer number from the Uniform Code Council after which he needs to assign the product number. This is needed as a combination of the manufacturer number and the product number will make the number for the bar code. The manufacturer must be alert that the number formed is of 11 digits as the 12th digit would be the checksum code.
Thus, buying cheap UCP codes will definitely be an easy thing for a manufacturer and at the end of this procedure, his product will be given an individual and unique UPC code in which he can decide the second half of the bar code even though the first half, which is the manufacturer number, is the same for all the items made by him!
