Hopes, Fears And Opportunities
Hopes, fears and opportunities
Hopes
I hope that I can continue to get stronger with my designs. I feel like I have come a long way as a designer and I think that this is noticeable within my designs. If I look over my work from the last three years I can see where my skills in different areas of design have developed and improved. I hope that I can just keep on learning and developing as a designer, I want to keep feeding myself with new information, designs and designers. I hope I stay as passionate about design as I am now, I hope that once I have completed my degree I can find design work and keep my passion growing. I hope that I am a good enough designer to be able to get a job in the industry because I do feel like It is possible.
Fears
I have so many fears when it comes to me and design. My main fears are that I will not be good enough for the design industry which will therefore lead into me not being able to get a job in the industry. I fear that if this comes true then I will be stuck in a dead end job that I don’t enjoy and that I am not passionate about for the rest of my life. I have worked so hard to make sure that each year I am constantly growing as a designer and as a person, so if I did not end up with a design related job I would be devastated. I fear that I am the weakest member of my class, because everyone else has studied graphics at high school, college and now university. I have only studied it properly at university, which I think automatically puts me at a disadvantage especially when it comes to design knowledge and design software. I have tried my best to make sure that I have developed my design software skills every year, as well as trying to feed myself with information to expand my knowledge about design and designers. I fear that I might not have created work good enough to graduate and even if I do graduate I will be the one person that graduates with the lowest degree mark, which would be a third. I fear that I took for granted my first year, so therefore I did not try hard enough to design things to my best potentially. It has potentially affected me in my second and third year, which has resulted in me getting lower marks on my completed assignments. I fear that because I have not been on any of the trips with university, that I haven’t gained the skills and knowledge needed to make sure that I am in the best position possible when I graduate to be able to get a job in the design industry. I know this could not be helped due to not having enough money to be able to afford these trips.
Opportunities
During my third and second year I have had more contact with the design industry which has help me gain a lot of confidence in myself and my designs, for the first time in three years I can actually say that I feel like a graphic designer. I have done a few voluntary design pieces of work for a variety of different companies, which I feel has helped me to gain experience in handling clients and creating work that I think works as a design piece as well as the client being happy with the final designs. I hope that the opportunities do not stop. I am currently working with a finance company creating leaflets, posters and business cards. This was an opportunity that was handed to me through pure accident and it has worked out really well for me, because I am being paid for my designs and I am also gaining experience of working with a new set of clients and meeting their visions through my designs. I hope that more opportunities like this come along until I can define myself more as a designer, which will hopefully lead to me being noticed more by designers, which then could potentially lead to me getting a job in a design studio.
