"making them afraid will make them more racist" that's wild to me, because we live in a whole culture of social consequences for antiracism anyway. It is literally safer to be a racist than it is to speak up against it, socially.

Idk about you, but "I'm afraid no one will want to be my friend if I'm a white supremacist" seems like a pretty logical thought process to have, and I wish THAT were the normal and not "I'm afraid my friends will hate me if I tell them they made racist jokes".

The Vampire Chronicles fandom is an utter shitshow, so I will just say this: there are good reasons why people dislike the rape of Claudia that was added to the show. Importantly, it is disgusting that once Claudia was made into a black teenage girl, the showrunner and writer thought that it was appropriate to add a subplot where she is tortured and abused by a character adapted specifically for this plotline.

It’s disgusting that this rape and torture happens directly after Claudia leaves home and attempts to educate herself. It’s disgusting that they then include a scene where her white vampire daddy drags her home by threatening to return her to her rapist. All while the show is set in a period where black women along with men were raped, brutalised, lynched and then sometimes tortured and raped again after death. Her (off-screen) rape was made spectacle for the characters and audience just as lynchings were made entertainment for white people.

What makes this worse is showrunner Rolin Jones and the predominantly white fandom. Jones framed Claudia’s rape in IWTV as “toughening her up.” Black girls and women are constantly dehumanised through an expectation that they become physically strong and emotionally tough, a direct result of the rape and torture that occurred during enslavement, and made a pop culture staple through minstrel acts. Consistently when black fans bring up misogynoir, the intersections of homophobia and anti-blackness, the specificities of black history and culture, and the blind spots in a show with no black writers, we are immediately shouted down.

There is a reason why black people didn’t want to see this! Because we always have to see it! Black women being raped and abused has been considered good entertainment for hundreds of years! See Saartjie Baartman, see the jezebels and sapphires of minstrelsy, see cop shows, music videos, Oscar award winning films etc etc etc. But everyone’s so used to it now that we’re called unreasonable for saying that the rape of a black girl is perhaps not a good form of character development, especially when we already know that the black girl in question is doomed to die. It added nothing to her story, nothing to the wider narrative, and nothing to the already understood themes.

But as long as people get to see a black girl/woman forcibly ‘put in her place’, that’s all that matters. I’m saying this as an IWTV and Vampire Chronicles fan who thinks the show was brilliant and generally thoughtful. But that doesn’t mean that it’s perfect, and it’s frustrating when fans don’t listen to marginalised people talking about how even good shows have built-in biases.
