I haven’t written anything in a while, and although I wasn’t planning anything, this idea popped into my head this morning and I found myself typing away before I could stop myself. The plot has stemmed from events that have happened recently, and I’ve seen some sadness floating around my Tumblr-sphere and I hope this may help give some of you a bit of hope if you need it.

“Go away, Mom!” she cried, tears running down her face. “Just go away. You don’t understand!”
I sighed, wanting to turn around and wrap her up in my arms. My sixteen year old daughter, my beautiful sixteen year old daughter, Lucy, had just broken up with her first boyfriend and wasn’t taking her newly assigned ‘single’ status very well. She had come home from school only hours earlier, her face already red and blotchy from crying, and had started screaming and shouting at me as soon as I’d asked her what was wrong. Once I’d finally got it out of her, she decided that the best thing to do was to lock herself in her room and not talk about it, only raising her voice to wail about how unfair it was and pleading with no one in particular for him to change his mind and be her boyfriend again.
It was breaking my heart to see her like this and even though I had finally managed to break down one barrier and get her to unlock her door so that I could check on her properly, she was now intent on kicking me out. She firmly believed that I wouldn’t understand the heartbreak she was experiencing because I was happily married to her father, but I wanted to explain to her how tough it had been for me when I was her age. I wanted to tell her that things would get better but every time I tried to articulate that, she would just cry even harder and tell me that I didn’t understand.
Her hand found the small of my back and, opening her bedroom door with the other, she gently pushed me out into the hallway.
“Please, Mom.” She begged, her eyes welling up with tears again. “Just leave me alone.”
With that, her bedroom door closed. I heard her flop down on to her bed and muffled sobbing sounded, causing my heart to break once again. I hated seeing my daughter like this.
I sighed once again and picked up the laundry basket that I had left outside her room, thinking that if I did some of the jobs around the house to take my mind off it, she might be willing to talk to me later on. As I stood up, I noticed my husband, Hunter, standing at the end of the hallway, looking slightly puzzled. He must have seen what had happened.
“Is everything okay?” he asked, his voice soft.
I felt my shoulders drop as I walked towards him and I shook my head.
I stopped in front of him and placed the basket at our feet. He tilted his head in curiosity as the sound of Lucy’s crying got louder again.
“Her boyfriend broke up with her today.” I replied. “She’s not taking it very well.”
I watched his face fall, as though his heart had been broken too, and his blue eyes pierced mine with their sorrowful look.
“I don’t know what else to do.” I admitted, my heart sinking. “She doesn’t want to talk about it. She hasn’t eaten anything since she came home and she thinks I won’t understand because I’m happy with you. She’s been locked up in her room since she came home from school.”
I watched Hunter glance at his watch, noting that three hours had passed since school had finished and nodded his head.
“Want me to talk to her?”
“You can try.” I offered. “But she might not want to. She kicked me out for just being in her room.”
He offered me a sympathetic smile and rubbed my arm gently with one of his hands. His touch was warm and I smiled at him, secretly thanking him for stepping in. He leaned forward and kissed me on the cheek before whispering, “I’ll see what I can do.”
He squeezed my arm once before walking towards Lucy’s bedroom, knocking lightly on the door and pushing down on the door handle.
“Lucy, its Dad. Can I come in?”
The tactic of knocking and opening the door at the same time was something that he had perfected over the years when Lucy had been in her room and he wanted to say hello. With the exception of today, she usually didn’t mind.
“No, Dad. Leave me alone.”
Hunter was already in her room by this point and he shot me a wink as he pushed the door to, leaving it open slightly so that I could hear.
“Now, that’s no way to talk to your Dad.” He replied, but I could hear the smile in his voice. “Come on, why are you crying?”
I heard him sit down next to her on her bed and I decided to walk towards the door so that I could get a better view of what was going on. The angle at which Hunter had left the door open allowed me to see Lucy curled up on her bed, her head resting on a pillow and Hunter sat next to her, his back leaning against the wall.
“Seriously, Dad.” She groaned, her voice tired. “Just leave me alone.”
“Why would I do that? You’re upset.”
“Exactly. Just leave me alone.”
At this point, I would have sighed and done my best to please her by leaving her be but Hunter didn’t seem to show one sign of exasperation. Instead, he patted her leg and told her to sit up. She did as instructed but sat with her arms folded across her chest, in true teenage style.
“Tell me what’s wrong.” He spoke softly.
Tears filled Lucy’s eyes and I swear I could have seen a flash of pain strike Hunter’s face. He was always sensitive to her feelings. She was Daddy’s little girl after all.
“Is this about a boy by any chance?” he asked.
She nodded and tried to wipe away the tears that were running down her cheeks.
“And did this boy do something stupid?”
Lucy paused for a moment, unsure how to answer before shrugging, a hiccup making her body jump slightly. That always happened when she cried for a long time.
“I don’t know.” She mumbled.
“Of course you do.” Hunter replied. He rubbed the bottom of her leg with his hand to try and calm her down. “Did this boy break your heart?”
Lucy nodded and as if on cue, more tears fell from her eyes.
“Then he did something stupid.” Hunter stated.
There was a brief pause before Lucy spoke.
“He doesn’t like me anymore, Dad. He said that we should just be friends because he wasn’t sure that he wanted me as his girlfriend.”
“He’s stupid.” Hunter jumped in, hardly letting her finish.
“No, he’s not, Dad. He’s smart. Why would he want someone like me as his girlfriend?”
“I think the question you need to be asking is: why would he not want someone like you as his girlfriend?”
“What do you mean?” she asked, her tears and high adrenaline causing her to not follow the conversation very well.
“Well, let’s see.” Hunter began, looking at her. “You’re beautiful, you’re incredibly smart, you’re always cracking jokes to make people laugh, you’re talented and you’re precious. Why would someone not want all of those qualities in a girlfriend?”
“I don’t know.” She mumbled. “Why don’t you ask him?”
She almost spat that last word and Hunter took it as his opportunity to try and use it as a positive thing.
“He’s stupid. If he can’t see how wonderful you really are and if he doesn’t want someone as great as you as his girlfriend, then quite frankly, he’s stupid. Any guy would be lucky to have you, sweetheart.”
“You’re just saying that because you’re my Dad.”
“No.” Hunter replied, his voice serious. “No, I’m not. You are so amazing, Lucy. You really are. And you’re only sixteen! You have your whole life to find a guy who will be the perfect gentleman and sweep you off your feet. You don’t have to worry about not finding anyone because you will but you’ve just got to wait until he comes into your life.”
“But-” she tried to protest. Hunter obviously knew what she was about to say because he cut her off.
“I know. Waiting might seem daunting and waiting might seem like this guy might never come around but I tell you something, you will find him. You’re going to meet someone one day who just completes your life and the great thing is, is that you’ll never have to let them go. And sure, you might have to go through a few more heart breaks until you find him but when you do, it’ll be so worth it.”
By this point, Lucy had moved so that she was sat next to Hunter. He had his arm around her and pulled her close so that he could hug her.
“I don’t know if I want to go through any more heart breaks.” She stated. “Boys suck.”
They both laughed and Hunter kissed the top of her head. “That’s my girl. You stay single and I’ll be the only man in your life. I’ll never hurt you.”
Lucy smiled and leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. “Thanks, Dad.”
They were silent for a few moments. The atmosphere wasn’t tense like before and I felt my anxiety about Lucy fade away. Hunter had known just how to make things better.
“Dad?” Lucy spoke after a few moments.
“What if I meet another guy and he’s stupid like the last one? And then the one after that is stupid? I don’t want to keep going through this.”
“Then, I’ll make you a deal now.” Hunter replied.
“I won’t let you date anyone stupid.”
Lucy laughed. “And how exactly are you gonna do that?”
“The guy will have to go through me first. If he’s stupid, I’ll catch it early on so that he can’t hurt you. It’ll save you a lot of time.”
I smiled at the thought, and Lucy must have too because the next thing I heard her say was:
Hunter laughed and kissed the top of her head again before speaking.
“So, a little birdie has told me that you haven’t eaten since you came home from school and since you’re now a free, independent young woman who’s Dad would like to buy her dinner to celebrate getting rid of a stupid boy, what would you like to eat?”
“You’re serious?” Lucy asked, lifting her head off Hunter’s shoulder to look him in the eye.
He nodded and she smiled.
“Pizza it is!” Hunter smiled, pushing himself off the bed as Lucy scrambled to get her shoes. “And I say we go for the double stuffed crust pizza topped with all your favourites, because all that crying has got to have made you hungry!”
I saw Lucy’s eyes light up in amazement as Hunter made his way for the door. He was about to reach for the handle when she darted across the room and wrapped her arms around him. He looked temporarily startled before wrapping his arms around her.
“I love you, Dad.” She murmured into his shirt, squeezing him tight.
He planted one kiss on the top of her head, smoothing back her hair before replying.
“I love you too, sweetheart.”
