With Twitter’s introduction of a new bookmarking feature, users can now easily save tweets and share them later. The icon will be available on every tweet as a private tool; meaning users can bookmark a tweet without notifying the person who posted it. Will this change the way consumers are interacting with the social media platform?
The app is dictating when and how consumers use it and providing a potential model for marketers.
The HQ Trivia app is dictating when and how consumers use it and providing a potential model for marketers. “Much like gambling, these appointment-based apps play off of the human need for thrills and risk—as well as the desire for exclusivity and inclusiveness.” By using an appointment-based model a company is giving consumers a reason to change their behavior.
HQ is also bringing mass data collection to the table. They are amassing huge amounts of data about their users and using it to test the messaging that consumers respond best to among other things.
In another HQ article, we touch on how there have been a lot of mixed reactions to HQ Trivia, one including “insane hallucinatory tech death”. With Black Mirror scarily predicting what our future looks like, a lot of people are saying that there’s a Black Mirror aesthetic to HQ. The game sucks you deeper into your phone with the promise of cash, creating a sense of urgency and inability to resist. An increasing number of Twitter users are tweeting their support for the boycott, which will start on March 1 and last all day. This morning, the hashtag #March1NRABoyCott has accompanied a steady flow of tweets from users who are upset that Apple and Amazon still offer access to the NRA TV streaming-video channel on their services. NRA TV is a free online-only channel with content from the gun lobbyist. It also includes commentary on recent events.
AT&T is getting caught up in the narrative as well. The gun-control organizations Moms Demand Action and Everytown sent a letter Friday asking five companies including AT&T — to cease streaming NRATV, saying “it’s time for tech leaders to acknowledge their role in helping the NRA spread this dangerous content.” AT&T and DIRECTV say that they don’t broadcast NRATV, but it’s exploded to quite the conversation on social.
If that wasn’t enough, last Friday the NRA honored the head of the Federal Communications Commission with a rifle after braving death threats and other opposition as he worked to repeal Net Neutrality...
Like major tech firms, AT&T should also be allowed to make and distribute content, says CEO Randall Stephenson.
AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson said it makes no sense for the government to oppose the telecommunications giant’s $85 billion buyout of Time Warner on the grounds that content distributors and content creators under the same umbrella would be anti-competitive.
He said major technology firms such as Netflix and Amazon are allowed to do the same thing. AT&T has maintained their ground that them merging with Time Warner would be a vertical merger, and that AT&T’s DIRECTV and Internet services is not a direct competitor to any of Time Warner’s businesses. The merger will give consumers more choice and lower prices.
Order estimates in the US slipped from delivery Friday — launch day — to next Tuesday. The smart speaker appears to be sold out for in-store pickup as well. So if you haven’t placed a HomePod order already, you probably won’t be able to get one from Apple on day one.
Apple is expanding their digital ecosystem even further, with the launch of the HomePod smart speaker. High level summary:
Pros: Amazing sound quality, Siri has a clear voice, attractive design
Cons: Must be an Apple Music subscriber for the full experience (savage, yet strategic for exclusivity), and no Bluetooth streaming
Apple tends to be the last one to join the party with the launch of their devices always showing up with something that “just works”. But there’s no denying that the sound quality of Apple’s speaker is top-notch, but in a marketplace where Amazon has such an entrenched smart speaker/voice assistant ecosystem and Google isn’t far behind, can a great-sounding-but-imperfect device be worth buying? Apparently, since the HomePod sold out of preorders the final day of preorders, which to Apple is strange, since their products usually sell out of preorders on the firs day.
The wireless carrier once again led the industry in subscriber growth, but its 2018 forecast calls for a slowdown.
The Un-carrier campaign is 5 years old, so it’s due to expire at some point isn’t it? Perhaps T-Mobile’s next breakthrough will be with Layer 3, the video startup it acquired in December. Its move into TV comes at a time when its rivals are making huge bets in the area. AT&T owns DirecTV and is trying to buy Time Warner, while Verizon acquired AOL and Yahoo. T-Mobile said it plans to launch a service this year. In a space where they’re all trying to do the same thing, how can AT&T stand out amongst the crowd? What do they have that the others don’t?
Or T-Mobile may identify another pain point, an aspect of wireless service that annoys customers, and attempt to fix it in another splashy Un-carrier event.
Today’s consumer landscape is overflowing with choices, and people often turn to third parties like influencers and media to get curated advice on everything from buying a new car to choosing a restaurant for dinner.
A POV from Accenture on the ins and outs of personalization. Predicting a consumer’s next move has become key in implementing personalization, but there’s a fine line between being cool and creepy. Are you listening to the wrong signals? Brands may think they are good at listening to their customers, when they’re really paying attention to the wrong things. It’s not just about the transaction. It comes down to the attributes. Why did they purchase? What were the micro-moments that led up to them purchasing? What was the context of their purchase? Paying attention to the wrong things is what leads a customer to leave. If it’s irrelevant, they have no reason to stay.
An app that broadcasts a gameshow that anyone can participate in 12 times a week has gone viral.
This is something that we’ve heard before, but is it true? There have been a lot of mixed reactions to HQ Trivia, one including “insane hallucinatory tech death”. With Black Mirror scarily predicting what our future looks like, a lot of people are saying that there’s a Black Mirror aesthetic to HQ. It’s simultaneously highly polished and incomplete. The 3D shapes that look flat until they move and of course the lags and glitches. The game sucks you deeper into your phone with the promise of cash, creating a sense of urgency and inability to resist.

In mid-2014, Dell and Intel embarked on an ambitious, long-view product ecosystem known internally as Dell Stack. The project centers on a 6.4-inch, full-HD mini-tablet that would underlie the desktop, laptop, and tablet experiences: That is, one device would power your entire computing ecosystem.
The current state of the project is unknown. It may have been shelved alongside Intel’s mobile ambitions when the chipmaker cancelled its Atom line of ultra-low-voltage chipsets, but since Stack envisioned utilizing laptop-class Kaby Lake silicon from the outset, it may have survived the strategy shift.
Director & Producer Ryan Beickert on why branded content isn’t just a trend in the industry but an evolution of advertising altogether.
Branded content is not simply a trend, it is an evolution of the advertising industry. Today the expectations of what a brand represents are so much greater than in the past. This is attributed to the efforts brands have placed in fostering closer bonds in their marketing efforts, in addition to the rise of transparency that the internet and social media provide. You often first hear uproar about a brand’s ethical or moral positioning over any buzz on the quality or utility of their actual products. News breaks faster about a brand taking a position for a particular cause before you might ever find out about a new product offering. Having the same tone-deaf conversation with everyone is equivalent to copy and pasting the same conversation to everyone on Tinder—it’s not how you stand out, and it’s certainly not how you begin an actual relationship.
Branding is all about telling a story; the process of creating the persona of a brand and aligning it to a target consumer authentically involves research into art, culture, and philosophy, and being connected to the greater zeitgeist. Branding has evolved and is replicating a lot of tools and skills that have been used in traditional storytelling for a very long time. Having an expertise in how brands specifically can use these tools gives you the ability to create with the brand, opposed to just creating your own thing and finding a way to wedge a brand into your art.
