Vigilant — The ‘g’ first.
Barry, Iris — thank you for showing me how to love again. For showing me that love is the most important thing we have.
I forgot you two got married! You two were so young.
Now that both The Flash and TWD are back, the bullshit goalpost moving has never been more clear.
On one hand, Iris West doesn’t deserve Barry (and shouldn’t even be on the show) because she hasn’t been deemed “useful” enough for some (read: useful in the way that they think she should be useful which is basically the opposite of whatever she’s doing at the time).
And on the other hand, you have a Michonne Grimes (yeah, I said it) who shouldn’t be with Rick because she’s *too* useful for some (read: a badass who can hold her own against walker and human alike aka a strong black woman who doesn’t need a man aka good enough for friend material and mammy duty to his kids, but not as a lover/girlfriend/wife).
So. According to the ever-shifting goalposts, black women aren’t love interest worthy or leading lady worthy if we’re not “useful” in the “right” way, BUT we’re also not love interest or leading lady worthy when we *are* useful in that traditional badass, asskicking way that fandoms usually love so much because she’s suddenly weak something something was better by herself something something now she’s boring. Or whatever. We’re either too much of something or not enough. And to some, both of those somethings makes black female characters (and/or aspects of what would otherwise be a full, well fleshed out storyline for any other character) unnecessary. And when the goalposts slides to what they say they want from her character, it moves yet again.
Watching people walk that tightrope this season has been very interesting. Maddening, but interesting. Especially given that the roles have sort of flipped with Iris being all useful and whatnot leading Team Flash and Michonne out of commission temporarily as she recovers from the fight she had with the Savior in the season seven finale.
It’s almost as if usefulness and badassery has nothing to do with it. 🤔

You’re bothered bitch? These are just the facts

I literally can’t think of a single reason people hate Iris West besides misogyny and antiblackness, like straight up she is an amazing character. She’s been under utilized in previous seasons but there is literally no reason for people to think she’s a bitch or mean or whatever bs they been pulling. She’s always been strong, sensitive, giving, and outspoken. Also people saying she doesn’t work with Barry??? They are literally soulmates y’all. They have one of the cutest relationships on TV right now. It has all the tropes people usually lose their minds over. Knowing each other since childhood? Barry saying he’s always been in love with her?
Someone needs to arrange an appreciation week or month or year for Iris West immediately cause I’m very tired of the fandom.

Iris Best is trending!
Let’s call a spade a spade….
Iris haters aren’t mad at what she said, because most of them can find a way to justify why Caitlin/Killer Frost can say hateful things and hurt and/or attempt to kill everyone on Team Flash and still return to Team Flash without explanation or apology. No, they’re mad because what Iris said mattered. They’re mad because she had the audacity to tell her fiancé, the ‘Superhero’ that he was in the wrong and she held him accountable for what he’s done. They’re mad because her words resounded with Barry so much that he changed his way of thinking—for her. They’re mad because the ‘Superhero’ relied on Iris and Iris alone to help him defeat the meta. They’re mad because NO ONE affects him the way she does.
Iris was 100% justified in being hurt that he left her the way that he did. That he gave her absolutely no warning and walked away from her with a smile on her face. She has a right to be angry that she had to face judgment and pity from family and friends in his absence. She was not wrong for feeling the way she felt. Her feelings were valid and deserved to be heard. Barry’s actions had consequences and this was one of them.
Iris and Barry are the Gold Standard of DCTV because not only was Iris able to talk to her fiancé and be 100% honest but he listened, apologized, explained his thought process and corrected his mistake. That’s what mature, loving, grown-ass couples do. That’s what people in love do. That’s why the haters are mad because over and over and over and over again the writers reiterate that Iris, a black woman, is the most important person to the most important character on this show and he would do anything in the world for her and they can’t stand that.
I don’t know what I would do if this is all that’s left of you.
