i feel like we were too harsh on the ps3. considering. the amount of games for every. console that came out after it
PS3 MENTIONED MY FUCKING BELOVED. ok this is my horny blog usually but im gonna be a fucking nerd for just a minute so hear me out okay. the ps3's cell architecture was genuinely so innovative it was so fucking powerful people just DIDNT USE IT PROPERLY!!!!! NOBODY WANTED TO MAKE GAMES FOR THE PS3 BECAUSE IT WAS A PAIN TO PROGRAM ON. games made for the ps3 either didnt use the spe's pretty much at all (i know most ps3 homebrew tends to ignore them) or they utilised then in such a poor way that it made the ps3 seem way weaker than it actually is. because cell relied on the spe's it means that you had to write code with parallelism in mind (ie: writing smaller tasks to be executed at the same time on each of cells 8 spe's (of which only 6 were avaliable - 1 was dedicated to running the ps3's OS and the 8th one was just not used because it allowed for mistakes to be made in manufacturing and for the processors to still be useable) as opposed to most modern processors which run code sequentially (ie: each task is completed one after another). this, combined with having to manually manage memory and data transfer between the main core of the processor and the spe's (something that could EASILY lead to bottlenecking if not done properly) made programming for this thing a fucking PAIN. it was incredibly difficult but so so so so so powerful, it was - and still is - incredibly good at high-throughput calculations which made it amazing for really pretty graphics and physics simulations - if you knew how to utilise it!! i dont think im stressing enough just how difficult writing code for this thing was. debugging was a pain in the ass, it was generally stupid complicated to use. this is also why ps3 emulation has taken so long to get good, everything about the cell processor is complicated. the rpcs3 team are genuinely so insanely talented and most people just do not appreciate them enough.
the cell processor is most of what makes the ps3 my favourite game console. its exclusive game library is generally pretty weak, the littlebigplanet games probably its best exclusives. although quite a few of my favourite games are non-exclusive games from that generation. mirror's edge and alien: isolation are both amazing games that are available for the ps3 that i highly recommend playing.
