It is, in fact, the surest sign of strength.

Clarke’s finger trailed in the dirt, leaving a small canyon in it’s path. She did her best not to make it too detailed, but instead wanted to just appear to the child as a friend. Deep down she’d always had a soft spot for kids, even as a kid herself she tried to parent smaller ones, even if back then she wasn’t very responsible herself she tried.
Kai. The blonde smiled, down at him, taking in the sight. His messy dark hair, tanned skin, lanky figure. She knew there had to be some orphans around here and with the lack of adults around, she couldn’t help but assume he was one of them. So, instead of treating him like a child, Clarke nodded her head as she would if she was meeting someone her own age.
She let her eyes drop to the shape on the ground, keeping her smile warm and genuine. “It’s good,” she offered to him, pointing at the untouched ground beside the picture.
Granted, no, she didn’t know what it was exactly, but she could tell it was some sort of animal by it’s generic shape He couldn’t have been older than seven or eight, he would’ve been in second grade on the Ark, so his skills were expected to be far from legible, especially since she hadn’t seen many grounders try their hand at any form of art.
Though, she was impressed, on the Ark, Abby had kept most of Clarke’s drawings from her childhood and his drawing was very good, even compared to her own from that age. If memory served her right, she wasn’t very good back then. “What is it?”
A tiny tongue pokes out the side of his mouth, eyes watching both his own drawing and the blondes, Klark - drawing beside him. He was wary, usually rather timid around most people - adults in particular made him uncomfortable. But so far Klark proved to be nice, she wasn’t being mean - and she even was nice when looking at his picture he had been working hard on - this fact alone made her much better than most of his interactions with adults.
Kai sat up a little straighter, turning his body slightly towards her - he was curious, but still kept his distance - keeping himself at least a little on guard.
He loved to draw, even if he wasn’t really good - even if he was supposed to train instead of doing ‘silly’ drawings. Titus’s words rang in his mind, making him pout for a moment. He was still adjusting to his new life, his life as one of the Natblida in Polis. He liked the other night-bloods, at least most of them - some weren’t too nice to him still - but he also liked Leksa. She was always nice to him, even when Titus was mean.
Any kind of praise at his drawings, was something that made his whole body light up in joy - it was something he loved to do, something that made him happy. Something that wasn’t compared to the other Natblida, it was his special thing he loved to do. As Klark spoke again he gave a little smile, pointing to his drawing before turning around and pointing towards several horses nearby being cared for.
“Gapa.”
The word was simple, but the way he spoke - his face brightened that same way it had when she praised his drawing. He loved animals, but horses were by far one of his most favorites.
natnomon:
“Because that’s why you’re here. That’s why Lexa has allowed you into her conclave and has sheltered you. She expects you to grow, to become stronger. Are you going to disrespect her generosity simply because you don’t want to train? I’m not asking you to fight Aden, I’m asking you to let him train you. ” eyes peered down at the boy, watching him try to stand tall, it was honestly endearing.
However, that didn’t stop the sweeping foot that sent the boy back onto his butt. In a way it was her attempt at putting him in his place. If he was going to play tough and refuse to train, then she’d show him just how easily he could fall prey to an attacker. Her blade already drawn from her back and the tip pointed into the boy’s face. “ If you want a fight, I can show you want a fight looks like. I assure you, that’s not what you want. ” the woman then re-sheathing her blade and taking a step back.
“ now get up. ”
At her words, Kai felt a tiny anger burning - of course he wasn’t going to disrespect Lexa. Of all the people he knew - she would be the last he would wish to do that to, the thought of it made him angry - a feeling he didn’t much like to feel at all. Everything else - he could handle being spoken - but not the idea of him disrespecting Lexa. He was focused on trying to ignore the little anger bubbling when he was suddenly swept off his feet.
His tiny body quickly falling and thumping to the ground, surprise and confusion quickly crossing his face as his eyes locked back onto Anya, only to see a blade now pointed at his face.
Kai quickly blinked, staring for a moment before jumping to his feet again, ignoring the fact that his body hurt slightly from the sudden impact with the ground, that tiny anger still burned in his chest. He cared - that was what made him feel that - he cared and now someone was saying he would dare wish to disrespect someone that he cared about.
He murmured something to himself - most of it too quite to be heard - he wasn’t going to be scared - he wasn’t going to be a ‘baby’, “... Les’a proud o’ me. I strong.” His chest heaved as he let a deep breath out, his eyes still locked on Anya.
“I train.. not fight.” His words were more sturdy, he didn’t want to be tripped again - but he also didn’t want to fight - he didn’t want to hurt someone again.
natnomon:
Anya snorted at the boy’s silence, reaching up to then flick the tip of his nose hard with her fingers. “ I’ve heard you speak to Lexa plenty of times to know you can hear me boy. ” she snarks. Anya was a hard case, abrasive at best, but she truly cared about those under her care. Most of the Natblidas would know that, but this boy, he was still rather new. She didn’t blame him for his insecurity and caution, but Lexa had left them to be trained under her supervision. The commander had other things to worry about, especially with Skaikru still causing so many issues. “you actually try with Aden or I’ll have you train with me directly. It’s up to you. If I were you, I’d stop being stubborn. ” she added before finally standing back up to her full height.
Kai jolted back, eyes wide - more from the surprise at the action than the fact that it had hurt, a little - but not much, he was surprised - and a little confused by the action, having not expected to be flicked in the nose. His hand darts up, rubbing at his nose before shooting a glare towards where a couple of the other children were now snickering. Her words though surprised him yet again.
It was rare that he spoke, at least more than a few words - but it was true, he had spoken with Lexa a little more - having told a few small details about his former life - before he had been through here. He refused to speak to almost anyone who wasn’t Lexa or the other night-bloods, mostly he spoke to Aden. The older boy having earned his trust quickly. His lips pressed together, shooting a slightly pouty look back towards her before straightening his small body - trying to copy her own action as he stood to his own full height - his shoulders back and head held high.
“Why? Don’t wan’ fight Aden. Why fight ‘em?”
His words weren’t spoken quite right - a little speech issue - he wasn’t even Seven yet - and slightly ruined by the fact that his voice was so quiet, afraid of being heard by anyone except who he was speaking to. He knew a little about the conclave - what would happen when Lexa would no longer be alive, but he didn’t understand it all. Aden said they were like family now - why fight your own family?
Anya stood by, silently watching. After several minutes she’d finally sigh, lifting a hand to pause the boys training together. Making her way over, dismissing the older before kneeling to Kai’s level. Dark eyes looking the youngest natblida over. “Your spirit isn’t in it. ” she commented. The boy was obviously reluctant to train, but that needed to change. Surely Lexa had explained the conclave, surely this boy knew if he did not learn that he’d eventually die. Granted Anya remember the last Conclave, she remember how Lexa cried into her chest when it was all over. It tore her heart in two, knowing the fate of these children, but it was the way of their people. It had been the same for many years.
@strikonkai
He didn’t want to train, he knew he had to of course - but he still didn’t want to. It wasn’t because of reasons most thought, Kai did have reasons of course he did. But what it came down to - was that he cared for the others, he really did - they were much nicer than others had been to him, and they also weren’t mean. Except Titus, Kai didn’t like him much at all.
A faint spark of fear crossed his face, as it was him that was addressed. Brown eyes darted around, glancing at the other children - at Aden, seeing the older boy give a hint of a smile - he knew he would be okay. There were very few people that he trusted here, and as far as Adults were concerned... that list was even smaller with only really Lexa - Heda, on it.
Fear or not, he lifted his chin, eyes meeting Anya’s as he was spoken to. His brow furrows, lips pursing slightly - a hint of confusion at her words. Few knew his past - where he came from, only that someone had kept him - a Natblida, hidden. It was what had happened when he had been discovered that pushed his wish to train, to fight so far away. He didn’t wish to hurt someone, but more than that - he didn’t wish to hurt someone he cared about... not again.

❛ —————— WHAT HAVE WE DONE ? ❜
ai-laik-wxnheda:
This day was nothing out of the normal beside the fact that the weather was surprisingly pleasant. The tower of Polis was becoming increasingly stuffy and the blonde decided that some fresh air and a good stretch of her legs was long over due – besides, if she saw one more candle she was almost sure that her head was going to pop off.
Out side she strolled casually through the city that lay outside of the the tall, stone tower and took in the culture. There were plenty of people who knew who, and what, she was especially in relation to the Heda. They’d been seen together more times than not and surly the guards had spread some sort of rumors about the calls the echoed through the hallways at night but the gazes and head nods, the parting of the crowds only slightly phased her. It was something to get used to for sure, but she hoped the fear of Wanheda would wear off with her presence.
Though, a boy, a small one with messy hair, caught her attention and it appeared that he was writing or drawing. Using the most soft voice she could, she approached and cocked her head, smiling warmly before sitting down beside him. Her own finger mimicked his after admiring the simple picture he’d drawn in the dirt before him. He was a kid after her own heart.
While his picture was simple, so was hers. The last thing she intended to do was outshine the child, but instead to bond with him. Her picture consisted of circles and simple stars, a generic picture of what she remembered of her live on the Ark when it was still in orbit.
“I like your drawing,” she offered him the kind words, “I’m Klark, what’s your name?” She asked the question while writing her name in the dirt closest to him.
As much as she could, she wished that she could speak to him in Trigedasleng, but her lessons with Lexa and Titus weren’t something that were high on her priority list.. or at least not as high as they clearly should’ve been. Deep down, Clarke hoped he understood, if not, she wasn’t sure what she was going to do, but she’d cross that bridge when she got there so to speak.
It was another day that Kai was glad to be the smallest of the nightbloods - he had managed to slip away from a lesson without being noticed, or at least not noticed by Titus. His nose scrunched at the thought of the man, he didn’t much like him - even if he was meant to be his teacher and Heda said he was to listen to the lessons, he wasn’t very nice - and he made Kairon’s tiny tummy feel all kinds of ick.
He had been hiding, at least for awhile - but then he had gotten bored and decided to draw. Drawing was something Titus got mad at him for doing, saying it was a waste of time. Kairon certainly didn’t agree and often took off just to draw, it was fun - and not at all scary, he liked to draw pretty things, even if he wasn’t the best - often his drawing of a horse turned out more like a strange bunny. But he had fun, and that was more than he had when Titus was around.
He focused carefully, trying to make the horse actually look like a horse. Tiny tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth as he worked. Barely moving when the blonde sat near him - his eyes instead focusing on his drawing, which was barely more than shapes forming a larger shap. His drawing was simple but he was still trying his hardest. It was only when he heard her speaking did he look up. Eyes shining at the praise as a quick smile brightens his face.
It was rare that someone complimented his drawings, rarer still did someone not say something mean - mainly Titus said those things, but still. The kind words clearly meant a lot as he smiled brightly, tilting his head as she introduced herself. Speaking wasn’t something Kairon often did, speaking meant people could be mean, speaking could also get him in trouble. But Klark was nice, and he liked nice people.
“I is Kai.” The small words, softly speaking Gonasleng, a little hesitant when saying his name before his eyes dart back to his drawing. Nose scrunching in thought before looking at her own little drawing curiously.
Kai wasn’t the best with his Gonasleng, often messing up wording and sounding a little choppy - while he understood a lot of it - despite his adversion to most of his lessons, and despite what Titus thought - he did listen - and Aden often helped him in private when it came to speaking and understanding. But even speaking Trigedasleng wasn’t something he often did. He was a quiet child, often watching and listening rather than speaking up himself.

Lexa slowed to a stop at the question. The mere mention of Aden, the Natblida made her chest ache. She hadn’t protected them when they’d needed it most. She’d been unable to save them and it would haunt her for the rest of her life. She’d seen so much death, but nothing quite hit home like those meant to exceed her murdered in their sleep. She could feel the swelling knot in her throat tightening, but this was not a time for weakness.
She needed to be strong, for Konkai’s sake. She swallowed it down, ignoring her own pain and slowly turning toward the boy at her side. A solemn smile tugging her lips. “…he was taken from us. He fell at the hands of Ontari. ” The words fell from her lips and suddenly emotions hit her like a war-hammer. She turned away, brows knitting together in a struggle to keep herself composed.
Green cast skyward as the moisture threatened to spill from her eyes. Slowly she allowed them to close, letting the sun warm her skin. “ They all fell. ” she added, a soft whisper but her words did not falter. Konkai was the last of the conclave, now in direct line to the title of Heda.
But not for some time. He still had much to learn and it would her responsibility as Titus was also gone.
As she stopped, he paused behind her - watching - instantly knowing the answer just by watching her. He had fallen. As the others had. But - how could they have all fallen? Why did he survive when they didn’t? Pain clutched at his heart - but he didn’t cry, even though he felt it building, wanting to cry for his friend, his brothers and his sisters - his hand grasping a little tighter to Lexa’s own - not letting go.
He swallowed hard, eyes staring up as she spoke the words - he had known, but he had hoped otherwise - Aden had always protected him - but Aden had fallen. Ontari had taken Aden from him, from Lexa.
“…he was taken from us. He fell at the hands of Ontari. ”
Her words rang in his head, lip trembling just slightly before trying to hide it, stiffling the pain aside. His head shook, not wanting to believe it even if it was true. Aden was gone.
He felt the tears welling up, but quickly pushed them aside - he was strong. He had to be. Dark brown eyes quickly glance back up at her, his hand giving a gentle squeeze - his voice quiet, but his words strong.
“ Aden... he saved me...” Kai’s voice shook, but he didn’t cry - he wouldn’t cry. Not now at least. “S-She hurt them..” His voice shook again, he remembered what happened - but he wouldn’t cry - his nights alone before being found again - they had been filled with him trying not to cry as memories of the darkness that night held - of the feeling of blood that was not his own, but just as dark - against his skin - of Aden whispering for him to run. Of stumbling away, trying to not be seen. He remembered pieces of what happened. They would always be there, haunting him - but knowing his brothers and sisters fought - of how Aden helped him, how he saved him - would become a strength. Their strength would become his own.
