Edward Hopper, Girl at Sewing Machine, 1921. Oil on canvas.
The painting portrays a young girl sitting at a sewing machine facing a window on a beautiful sunny day. The location appears to be New York as is evident from the yellow bricks in the window. The exterior vantage point although present only aids in putting the interior activity in perspective.
It is one of the first of many of Hopper's "window paintings." Hopper's repeated decision to pose a young woman against her sewing is said to be his commentary on solitude.
The painting is the inspiration for Mary Leader's poem of the same name.

On the same day that Hitler and his new wife, Eva Braun, took their own lives, the photojournalist Lee Miller took a bath in the Führer’s bathtub. Her lover at the time, the Life photographer David Scherman, captured her bathing, and in time the picture he took would become famous as a kind of apt visual metaphor for the end of the war. Using a "painting with thread" technique, she creates portraits, anatomical forms, and ethereal figures that seem to float within wooden hoops, blending craft with fine art.”
