Measuring with dots

someone asked me to post this technic.

When you deal with comics and depending on your drawing style you might need to be accurate with proportion and deal with a lot of differents size’s objects. So I was looking for a way to measure things very quickly without getting lost with too much lines… And then I came up with the dots technic.

I draw 2 dots, one will define the top of the object and the other the bottom.

I know it sounds easy but it wasn’t for me, I only have some set of sizes which I was confortable with. But doing this exercice obliged me to know how I would draw things at different sizes.

I did this for a human body, but I could do it just with a head, a car, a lamp and so on…

I used to do this a lot with posemaniac set to 45 sec. with different distances between the dots for each pose. It trains my brain to compute quickly how to fit my objects into the two dots.

And with a lot of practice I don’t need the two dots anymore.
