Consider that at that point Steve had already hated the role of Captain America, knew that people thought he was meant for nothing more than a symbol, that Steve Rogers didnāt matter as long as Captain America did his job. Who cares that Steve was strong and passionate and brave? America needed a mascot, a golden boy, and thatās what Steve has to play as.
Until he grew tired of it. He broke away from it, and he saved the 107th. Out of sheer rage of injustice and a desperate need to save his friend, he took on an ENTIRE German base.
But that bar scene! That scene when Steve just saved them, and still isnāt sure if it justifies that he is a good person. That question, āready to follow Captain America into the jaws of death?ā Is Steve knowing that everyone prefers Cap over him, that no matter how valiant the act Captain America gets the praise, not Steve Rogers.
But Bucky shuts him down. Bucky knew from the beginning, he straight up tells Steve that he knows Steve is trying to prove himself when they first parted ways, and he knows that Steve thinks this is what makes him great. So he shuts him down.
He tells him no, Captain America isnāt who heās following, heās following Steve. That Steve is worthy to follow, that Steve is the one who made Captain America great, not the other way around. And you know Steve needed that, after everyone putting down Steve yet praising Cap.
Because the world might prefer Captain America, but they need Steve Rogers. Screw that, Bucky needs Steve Rogers. Steveās question was meant to sound cocky, but it came off as degrading, because thatās what it was. And thatās why Buckyās response mattered so much.
