THE FIRST SECTION ASKS YOU TO COMPARE AND CONTRAST YOUR WORK IN CLASSICAL THEATRE - GREEK, MELODRAMA AND SHAKESPEARE AND USE YOUR RESEARCH DONE FOR THIS AT XMAS AND IN LESSONS.

PART TWO ASKS YOU TO EVALUATE YOUR ROLE IN ROMEO AND JULIET. IT IS ONLY THE FIRST QUESTION OF THIS SECTION THAT ASKS YOU TO COMPARE IT TO THE ACTING STYLE / ROLE IN COMMEDIA (because this covers a unit that you began in Commedia)

Classical Theatre…guide to evaluation report (due 16/4/2017) Please follow this guide to create an evaluation report to bring together all the research and exploration you have created and used for classical theatre (it will also ask you to compare to your term 1 acting style – developed in Commedia dell’arte - in certain questions only) This is to show that you have developed your acting skills and gained knowledge of performance and acting style over two terms. PART ONE: Research report…. (this covers ICTP P1 M1 D1) Using your research into Shakespeare, your class notes and task sheets and his style of acting as well as your notes from Greek Theatre and Melodrama answer the following questions in a report style. This can either be typed or videoed. You should undertake a detailed investigation into the vocal and physical requirements of a range of classical texts from different historical periods. Your investigation should include primary exploration in workshops and practical classes as well as secondary research activities. • evaluate the performance features and acting demands of at least three classical texts from different historical periods including making effective reference to: ● the social, cultural and historical context of the text and playwright

● the vocal requirements and physical demands to be considered when interpreting the text and developing character(s) for performance

● the demands and requirements that each classical text places on a modern actor eg discuss costume, vocal demands, gestures and language analysis as well as being in an outdoors location.

• compare and contrast well-chosen examples of the performance features (vocal and physical) of each classical text to support your evaluation. For example you can discuss the rhythm and ‘meter’ and ‘iambic pentameter’ in Shakespeare’s text and how this caused the actors to ‘rant’ on stage in order to be heard, to stand out and to stress the poetry in the language. You could compare this to the work we did on melodrama and the similarities of the style. You could say how this also may contrast to Greek Chorus but may compare to the acting style – all work we did in class is on the VLE to remind you!

Your report should be clearly presented using correct use of subject specific terminology as well as good use of spelling punctuation and grammar. Your report may be presented electronically to include links to relevant audio and/or video recordings. PART TWO…. AN EVALUATION OF YOUR PERFORMANCE OF ROMEO AND JULIET (this covers ICTP D3 M4 P5, DST P6 M4 D3 and AS P1 P5 P6 M1 M4 D1 D3) • Compare and contrast the style of acting used in Romeo and Juliet (with reference to Shakespeare and Melodrama) with the acting style of Commedia dell’arte used in ‘The Duchess mislaid’. (P1 M1 D1) • You must compare and contrast this using examples from your two performances and discuss the techniques you used and compare how you adapted and used these two styles to perform your characters.

Using your performance in Romeo and Juliet answer the following questions…. THIS IS TO BE USED AS A GUIDE TO HELP YOU EVALUATE THE PROJECT AS A WHOLE! READ THROUGH AND MAKE NOTES ON ALL QUESTIONS AND SKILLS BEFORE YOU BEGIN WRITING YOUR EVALUATION PLEASE.

• Evaluate your skills throughout the process starting with your professional conduct in the group.

Describe your strengths and weaknesses as part of a professional team getting the show ready for an audience. Including, setting up the stage, finding props and costume, organizing set, costume props, working as a team, time management, focus and concentration in rehearsals, your role in the tech rehearsals, organization and communication as a team to get the show ready, experimenting and auditioning for roles.

• If you had more time what would you do differently to make the piece and your overall experience even better?

• What do you plan to do differently in the next project?

• Explain who your target audience might be for the play

• How did your audience react to the performance? What was their feedback?

• Evaluate each skill Vocal, physical, Characterisation. Looking at • What was good? And why it was good using specific examples from Romeo and Juliet • What could be improved? And why it needed improving using specific examples from the performance • If you had more time what would you do to improve these skills/ moment on stage • Try to find 3 examples of strengths and weaknesses for each skill Think about vocal skills we have developed eg: projection, tone, over exaggeration, poetry, rhythm, iambic pentameter, ranting. Think about the use of physical skills eg: over exaggeration, specific coded gestures, tension, etiquette and status.

At COLLEGE - thursday morning this week is dress rehearsal - bring your costumes, in the afternoon AT COLLEGE will be tech work and the level 2 devised show at 3.30pm (bring safety pins and hair wands/elastics for hair / make up rehearsal as well)

At TAPTON HOUSE on FRIDAY 9-4.30 is our tech run, you will get a separate timetable for our runs and performances all next week

Cat & Ricky went to join some of the performing arts students at Chesterfield college and they auditioned for the part of Friar. I think it is fair to say that they should of left it to the students. They were very talented and looking forward to putting on an outdoor performance of Romeo & Juliet at Tupton House on April 6th & 7th.

You should be on blog 3 this week - guide below to remind you of the questions

BUT WHAT DO I WRITE ABOUT? WELL...

Write when you've blocked your scenes and when you've done character or technique work. Even though you have done tech work one week there will still be technique work to talk about. It's how you're relating all that to the role. The character sheets. The fight scenes. You could also rehearse those scenes you’re in when we're blocking other scenes. Remember all the melodrama work we did - think about the acting style and focus on how your character is using those techniques.

CLASSICAL THEATRE BLOG guide: YOU NEED TO PRODUCE AT LEAST 5 BLOGS FOR ROMEO AND JULIET AT KEY POINTS THROUGHOUT THE REHEARSAL

These guides are designed to help you with writing your blogs in a structured manner. Logs are there to help you develop your character and performance so that you have something to refer back to and help you develop a stronger character and performance. You cannot just write one word answers. Imagine you are explaining to someone who has not been at the workshop, try to explain techniques and use terminology to describe your skills. You will document your individual progression including

- actions and targets met from previous weeks

- physical, vocal and interpretive skills

- Personal Management and Discipline

- Your Response to feedback from teachers and peers

- Overall evaluation of progress and target setting

1 Firstly talk about what you have done during the sessions and what you have done in particular to develop the ACTING techniques and performance skills, along with any acting skills needed for the performance. Always make comments on the process in terms of your own development within the performance and what you have achieved. Create a performance blog that includes a combination of video recorded evidence and supporting notes on your progress

These blogs will be uploaded to Tumblr and must include the correct use of terminology appropriate to the discipline/style of performance.

2 What were your initial feelings and thoughts on the session?

Discuss the exercises you have done during the sessions to develop the style or techniques?

- What was the exercise?

- What was its purpose?

- Where did the techniques/ skills come from? Eg. practitioner or style/ video example research.

Next Monday college will be fundraising for Chesterfield Guide Dogs with a "Meet the Guide Dog room" S032, they are asking for a £1 contribution to help this worthwhile cause. There will also be opportunities to buy merchandise and cakes in the Heart Space

Tickets are £3 per pupil with free teacher places, general public £5

Please note that some sections of the performance will be outdoors so suitable clothing / outdoor wear will be necessary.

Feel free to bring: blankets, umbrellas, folding chairs and a picnic if required.

There is a café and parking on site and the performance areas are accessible – please note there are a couple of very gentle sloping steps down to the peace garden outdoors (pictures of this can be provided if required)

The performance will be set in the Regency Period to allow our students to explore the etiquette and acting style which would be similar to the original text. There are workshops available on text, language and melodrama which can be booked using the contact below

just bought these - please ask at home / friends etc if they have any small bottles or anything that we could borrow eg: fans, shawls, long gloves. I hired two pairs of white gloves though I have the costume hire list you can photocopy and use to make sure it all goes back to Nottingham Community wardrobe.

Chesterfield College Student News: Breakfast Club now open! BREAKFAST CLUB – 8.00 am to 8.30 am starting Tuesday 7th March and Wednesday 8th March

Breakfast Club will be available every Tuesday & Wednesday in Costa during term time.

The service is offered free to students and also provides a selection of healthy foods for breakfast which is available to any students choosing to attend. Watch TV, read magazines, enjoy activities and meet new people. Eating breakfast is also proven to help boost academic performance.
