You know, I think Heinkel actually SHOULD get some credit for how he raised Reinhard during the formative years of that kid’s life. Because yes, he has definitely deteriorated as a father figure since then, but this guy was given a toddler who:

Had the powers of a Literal God, and who only seemed to be getting more Godlike by the day

Demonstrated absolutely no qualms about using his godlike powers to actively screw with other people’s minds and free will, to the point where the government almost kidnapped the kid because that was such a pants-sproutingly freaky sort of threat

Stole his grandmother’s Divine Protection because there was a chance that she would die even if she had it, and this five year old assumed that it was more important that “the Sword Saint” wouldn’t suffer defeat than it was that his grandma had every fighting chance possible

Was explicitly so fucking terrifying that several characters describe looking at this little boy as akin to laying their eyes on some sort of eldritch abomination

and Heinkel somehow managed to raise that kid to value kindness, the lives of other people, and the free will of those around him.

Like, Heinkel probably saved the entire world from undergoing some sort of disaster scenario through his parenting skills during the first…eight or so years of Reinhard’s life. And not just that: however inhuman the guy might be (it’s still up for debate), Reinhard is fundamentally a Good Person, and that’s in no small part because of the lessons Heinkel explicitly taught him when he was small. Because Reinhard definitely was not born with the understanding that letting people die to uphold the sanctity of their titles is a horrible thing to do, OR that screwing around with people’s minds is a really bad idea. If Reinhard had been born to someone like ROWAN or something then this world would be absolutely fucked lmao

#rezero #re:zero #heinkel astrea #reinhard van astrea #very very good point. just the way heinkel responds to reinhard brainwashing marcos was ultimately really solid given how upsetting the #circumstances were. in just that scene alone we see heinkel instill in reinhard the lesson to not ruin other peoples autonomy like that #its also telling that little kid reinhard is so eager to see his dad again that he runs out of the house to go meet his dad in the alleyway #thats a child that loves and trusts their father #and theres a sadness to the fact that heinkel doesnt want reinhard to be the sword saint and reinhard knowing this fact. bc deep down the #reason for heinkel not wanting that underneath the layers of complicated emotion is that reinhard has always been his and louannas son #lots of love there. even if its worn. its why reinhard is not much much worse than he is #before everything went Really wrong heinkel did try to raise reinhard well. and in that sense heinkel succeeded against every odd ever #reinhard is loved by the world. if the world is his father and mother and friends

i really appreciate your ask. this blog is like several years old by now as i've said, and my posting/activity in this fandom has kind of whittled down over time due to various life stuff. college, personal events, atrocious amounts of writers and art block, rezero web novel arc 9, etc etc. i haven't been doing much rezero in a while, though i do have some stuff i've been cooking that i hope to finish! like my fic debut for this au i've been doing with some pals, and this other fic with another pal... yeah idk, my google documents are full of rezero still years later.

otherwise, life's been busy and creatively i've been distracted by my own ocs that i play dolls with on my main tumblr blog pfft. but i promise i'm still alive! and i'm happy to hear people still like my silly writing and my silly blog posts that i did ages ago, so your ask made my day. have a good one :D

as an otto fan its also incredibly funny how he barely did anything remotely villainous/“villainous” for the sake of “saving” subaru and going behind emilias back this arc. you wanna know who did though? yeah. yeah.
