I don't really see many people talking about it, but if I don't I think imma explode
The thing is, when you see Rover interacting with people who knew them before amnesia, they're usually pretty chill, they don't really get sad, or emotional or anything (judgement on Luuk still pending, but that's coming in like, 3 weeks)
However.
Just look at the later interactions between them and people they consider their family.
When interacting with Mornye, they don't seem to be anything other than "hip and cool" in words of Gai-sensei. They love Mornye, but it's a love between old friends, and there's no vulnerability from Rover's side.
But with both Shorekeeper and Aemeath, in specific parts, you can see Rover being vulnerable, and even genuinely upset about their memory loss, and actively sad that they don't remember their loved ones.
Look at how desperate they were to save Shorekeeper from being formatted by Tethys System, look at their face when they sit by Shorekeeper at the piano, saying they don't remember how to play it, and being unhappy about it, look at how soft they are when they say "my Shorekeeper".
Look at how sad they are when it finally is revealed that they're a parent to Aemeath, how happy they are when everything is seemingly said and done and they get to interact with her, and look at how devastated they are when she goes off to fulfill her duty to the world.
I can bet that the whole memory erasure wasn't an easy decision for Rover to make. It was the very last resort to find a way to stop the Lament once and for all.
Warning do not read if you have not played through the 3.1 update or can't handle super emotional stuff related to selflessness
Honestly all of this is just me ranting(In a good way) because I can't with the feels, I need to word vomit this all out before I explode in tears.
The fucking themes of home and missing home but being unable to return to it, the acts of selflessness by taking bits and pieces of yourself away just to make others happy at the cost of your own happiness and sense of self, of who you are as a person, that if you cannot fulfill it then who are You? You tell yourself you're ok with it, that it is worth it, that you shouldn't miss home because now you are someone elses home, someones source of comfort, someones source of hope. You have sacrificed everything, your home, your body, your time, your strength, your mind, Yourself, you have shed that all away to become everything except yourself. You are everything everyone else needs but not your own.
And I love that it shows us that the player character isn't just a badass, they had to sacrifice so much in their past to get to the point they are now including themselves and what they want.
And God how their selflessness can and does affects those around them, be it family, friends, or someone they just met.
We can see the effect with Aemaeth, as Aemaeth grew up around Rover's selflessness, it became the normal for them so of course they did what they did, that's what Rover does too, it's what Rover has done for so long.
And don't get me started on the messages on the lengths Family will go for each other. In life you see this as letting family stay in their home while they get back on their feet, traveling miles and even countries to see family in dire need, in the case with Aemaeth and Rover, it's her trying to take away his burden so he could live freely.
God they are so kind and selfless to help others and denying losing anyone because they can't accept the thought of anyone being in their position too yet at the same time while doing that shut others out from helping them because again, they don't what the others to be burdened with what they have.
They are Atlas with the world on their shoulders; they are the Lamb at the sacrificial alter who continues to get sacrificed over and over and over and refuses to let others take their place or share the burden.
And the moment someone else takes the mantle of sacrifice, even for a moment, they can't handle it, no this is not your fate, don't take my place at the alter for I am the sacrifice everyone names, that is what I am, please do not hurt yourself to ease that burden, this is my fate, it has been for years.
I know that there are more themes than just these ones in the update augh I need to word vomit my feelings about this. But just, crying bawling throwing up in tears hhhhhhhhhhhhh
Did Kuro at least kiss the brick before throwing it at us?
