Proving to my big brother I’m better than him! (If you ignore the ball whizzing past me!)
@sullijane: Trust me, I know Davey. And from that alone, I can confirm you are the best tennis player I have ever seen. I’m assimilating his expertise, so my word is final.
Wally’s heart sunk, a lump forming in his throat. There it was, the age-old tell. Sullivan May was forever calling him mean, and he no longer had a single plausible argument at his disposal to counter it. He wasn’t entirely sure she was wrong at all. Because hadn’t his behaviour across the last few months just been agonisingly cruel? The May sisters were going through the unimaginable, and he’d come along and poured salt on the wound.
He had no right to miss her as much as he did, and yet. She consumed his every waking thought and even, at times, his unconscious ones too. He’d lost track of the amount of times Sulli had visited him in his dreams, taking his hand as she lead him down one of the many winding paths that had grown so familiar to them in Paris. Just last week, he’d dreamed of her hands in his hair, her lips brushing his own. It was a visual he’d been physically incapable of shaking off, permanently tattooed to his eyelids, there to remind him of her absence every time he so much as blinked.
“Maybe I am mean. A cruel, heartless bastard,” he whispered under his breath. He shook his head, combing his fingers through his unruly hair. He was long overdue a haircut, rogue strands constantly spilling out across his forehead and into his eyes.
He didn’t want her pity, but he also didn’t think he’d ever deserve her forgiveness. Right now, he wasn’t completely sure what he wanted from Sullivan May, but he knew that whatever pain he was causing her needed to stop. He needed to put his foot down. Fuck Frankie and whatever mindless ideas she had about protecting Sullivan. Nothing about her stupid plan was doing any of them any good.
“I know, sweetheart,” he breathed, the nickname falling from his lips so tenderly, the most natural thing in the world. He winced, hearing it echo through the room, a note of familiarity that he hadn’t earned.
He wanted to stay strong and maintain a distance, allowing Sulli her own space. But hadn’t that been exactly the thing that had ruined them altogether? Wally had thrown a wall up between them, forcing distance between them that she’d never asked nor agreed to. He hadn’t ever given her a choice, and now as he watched her hold back tears, he wanted nothing more than to run to her.
“Fuck. I know, Sull. I’m a rogue and a prick and you have every right to hate me, but I–” With every word he uttered, he’d been edging closer to her, desperate to reach for her, to pull her into his arms and prove to her how sorry he was. As soon as the tears started to roll down her cheeks, he was done for. His heart ached in his chest, and he took another final step towards her, his breath catching in his throat as she took a step back.
She was right. He’d left her all alone to fend for herself, and now she had every right to stay there, to keep him at arm’s length and protect her space from the horrid little boy she’d been kind and sweet enough to let into her life.
“I was selfish and stupid. I thought...” he exhaled slowly, searching for the right words before discovering they were nowhere to be seen. What did he think? In what reality would it serve Sullivan to stay away from her while she mourned the loss of her sister? He hadn’t wanted Frankie to love him, and right now he barely had her friendship. How could he have tossed aside on of the best and truest friends he’d ever known like that?
“I was a coward,” was all he managed to muster as his shoulders slumped, his entire body deflating in defeat.
Throwing out accusations at Wally was only done to make herself feel better. She hadn’t expected him to actually agree with her.
The moment he started calling himself down, she was possessed with the age-old instinct to defend him. It did nothing for her pride, but she found herself quietly shaking her head in confusion. Just because Sulli had called Wally those things, she hadn’t actually meant them. Didn’t he know her anger burned bright and quick and never lasted long? Not when it came to him. Her hurt? Her hurt had a much longer shelf life, she’d admit to that, but it was hers to deal with on her own. She had learned that long ago, even before Beth had gone.
Her heart stopped momentarily at the pet name that slipped from his lips, wrapping itself around her ribcage and knocking her breathless. Would there ever come a day when Wally didn’t have that sort of effect on her? She doubted it, and that was just too devastating to dwell on right now.
“Wally, stop,” she mumbled pathetically.
She wasn’t sure if she could take it if he kept calling himself down like this. As much as she hated to, she couldn’t help but recall the night when Frankie had come home, frantic and furious, detailing Wally’s proclamation of love to her before she dragged his name through the mud, angry that he would ruin their friendship in such a way. Gigi had sympathised and Beth had worried, but Sulli had stood in the doorway, heartbroken and envious and completely baffled.
“Why don’t you love him back?” she had asked, then immediately flinched away from the absolute ire in Frankie’s face as her sister rounded on her.
And that was the crux of it, wasn’t it? Sulli had lived more years loving Wally than not. In her weakest moments, there was nothing Wally could ask for that Sulli wouldn’t give him. If she didn’t love him so much, she would despise him for what he had turned her into, a simpering devotee who cried in front of him.
Wiping angrily at her tears, she shook her head.
“You chose to be a coward then,” she argued, fighting to keep hold of the last shreds of her dignity.
“And you were selfish,” she agreed, although she would never continue to call him stupid. After her sister, Wally was the smartest person she knew, their friendship built on a foundation of mutual interests and academia. It was no wonder Sulli could ever even come close to touching that.
Sniffing loudly, she swiped her fingertips underneath her eyelids again, catching more tears that frustratingly refused to stop. Trembling, she lifted her head to look at him, handsome as ever with his overgrown hair and piercing eyes. God, this was torture. It was always going to be torture.
“I wish I could hate you right now,” she said. “God, I’d give anything to actually, properly hate you, you know. But instead…” She shook her head wordlessly.
It took everything in her to choke the next words out, but if this was going to be the final nail in the coffin for her and Wally, then she might as well let them go out without anything left unsaid.
“You know I can never hate you and that’s the worst part. You know I would still be here waiting around for you, because you could ask me to do anything and I would. That’s the worst part. I would do…” Her fingers scrabbled uselessly for purchase on the pendant of her necklace and she held onto it. “I don’t hate you but I really, really hate what you’ve turned me into.”
