Please take a look at the new classic movie website founded by my sister tumblr, sistercelluloid! And stay tuned for lots more good stuff there, including news, photos and contests with fabulous prizes like vintage jewelry, books, DVDs and music...
When does the "out like a lamb" part kick in?
So now that it’s nearly April I just realized I forgot to put someone away after Christmas.
But now he and the dog have bonded.
Original caption: Jack Benny with his arm around the shoulder of his wife, Mary Livingstone, as she leans on a counter outdoors, c. 1960
Note to caption writer: I am now leaning on a counter indoors to keep from fainting from sheer awe at your caption-writing ability.
My reaction when anyone says "Happy Pi Day!"
I actually do love math, but this just seems so smug and self-congratulatory. It's like, "Ooh, I'm smart, and you're smart too! We are so f#$%ing smart!"
Ugh.
Hey autumnpassionflower, my kindred spirit in all things Charles Boyer and an all-around lovely person, this one's for you!!
Ever wonder what it would be like to hit the hay with him? Wonder no more...
This is my humble little contribution to today's Jean-a-Thon... thank you, Kelly, Laurie and everybody for today's Du Jardin of Eden! Rummaging through those photographs and videos must have been gruelling...
Goodnight, ladies!! And love from New York!!
Nothing says "Come and get it!" like the disembodied head of William Bendix.
Now ladies, I know they gave us a whole International day and all, but don't let's get carried away. Please heed this very important public service annoucement. The dinner party you save may be your own...
This could get awkward.
I was trying on one of my vintage necklaces -- one of the ones with the thing that crosses over the other thing and then snaps closed. But the thing that's now on top of the other thing, which has a tiny little thing that you pull up to open it again -- well, it's either stuck or I can't find it. Even when I turn it around and look in the mirror, which also makes everything backward. So apparently I'll be wearing a lovely two-strand, collar-length aurora borealis necklace for the rest of my life. So if you see me sporting it with, like, shorts and a teeshirt, please just admire the sparkly sparkliness. Thank you.
Frowback Friday: My Mom and Dad. They were visiting an Army friend of my Dad's, who gave him this, um, tie with his initial on it. My father was a very classic, conservative dresser, but the guy was a great friend and had gone to all the trouble of getting the tie monogrammed, so my Dad of course wore it very enthusiastically.
Well, the guy was also a professional photographer, and wanted to do a portrait of my parents. Which turned out to be one of the nicest pictures I have of them. So my Dad is now immortalized in that tie...
He still looks fabulous though!! And Mom's a cutie.
Dujardin du Jour
"Jean, do you promise to to give your very best tomorrow for International Women’s Day? Women all around the world will be expecting you to make the day extra special for them."
Oh yes, he's all over it. Sigh. Excuse me for a minute while I ponder that thought.
Yes please. Right now. You drive.
So I'm talking to my Mom about this nasty winter and I say thank God spring starts this month. And she says, "Well, you know, we've had some pretty nasty Aprils."
Judy always felt like the "ugly duckling" in this trio.
God only knows why.
Happy, Happy Birthday Anniversary to one of the dreamgirl loves of my life: edgy, smart, vulnerable, gorgeous, highly strung, soft, brittle Margaret Leighton. You've never heard anyone say of another actress, "You know, she reminds me of Margaret Leighton..." And you never will. When they made her, they truly did break the mold, which was a bit fragile to begin with. I'm pretty sure Noel Coward's "The Astonished Heart," which is kind of the flip side of "Brief Encounter," is still on Netflix Instant Play -- at least the last time I checked, to watch it for, like, the ninth time, it was. If you need a Margaret Leighton fix, that's a good place to start... And if you can get your hands on a copy of "The Holly and the Ivy," you'll be so happy you did. Actually she'll pretty much amaze you in anything. Good God, I love this woman. And I love to think of her with the wonderfully wry Michael Wilding, with whom she spent her last and happiest years. What a fabulous couple. Sleep well and calmly, dear Margaret, with Michael by your side...
