Fei: Hello, welcome everyone to this auspicious occasion. We, Paddington galleries thank you all for being able to arrive to this exhibition brief night. So, who are we? The gallery of Paddington is located in the inner-city surburb of Paddington. It is positioned in a diverse and creative area which also has UNSW's Art and Design faculty and some other galleries. The gallery is run by some art students and the purpose of the gallery is trying to show different times of different time and trying to find the relationship between the artworks and their values. But, as many of you know, the Gallery of Paddington is hosting several highly anticipated exhibitions in the near future, and one we wanted to especially highlight is Harry Chan’s oil on canvas, “Disarrayment”.

Darwin: We have hosted Harry’s exhibitions before, so for those new here, let’s read through his biography for context. Harry Chan was born in northern China in 1974. His parents work in a metal factory but was unable to make a living due to the low labour wages in 1070s. So they decided to move to Sydney in 1980 in the hope of higher paid jobs. In Sydney, Harry Chan and his family lives in an immigrant camp where he spent his entire childhood. In the morning his parents would go out to work leaving Harry at home. They had a better living quality but Harry felt very lonely and boring with the empty house and he had no friends, he was the only kid living on the campus. But there was one thing that Harry enjoyed- he loved painting. He was always painting his imagination of the outside world and the future, until he went to university. He realised how life in the city was so different to his imagination and found it very hard to fit in with people who grew up in the city. This made him feel isolated and sad. But his wonder about the world and his uniqueness among others catalysed and led to the artwork we are talking about – the disarrayment.

Nicole: Now, let’s look at his previous exhibitions held here. *click to 2006 exhibition*. This painting is the epitome of 21st century millennials, for they are unique amongst the void of human interaction. Socializing and communication has become an obstacle for them and for that reason it has become much harder for them to find a place in society. Every individual is independent and have the ability to convey themselves, but is unable to. This leads them to a different paths. These paintings express their difference and isolation in the mind of a millennial.

If we want to go into further deeper analysis, the two lines are highlighted in the broad surface by the contrasting colours and sizes which distinguish them from the background. Different colours of the line also represents the skin colour of these people. It’s a global issue rather than happens to individuals. Through the use of strong colours, it conveys a strong message of emotions. Those lines which look like in order, but they are outstanding compare to the background. They are the disarray ones among the whole area.

Fei: *click to the 2013 exhibition page* In his next exhibition held in 2013, unfortunately there were numerous issues which led to most of lost to history. The first work was lost due to poor handling, the second was damaged by pests, and the third was due to fire hazard. All that’s left is this one, and we are trying to protect it at all costs.

Judie: *click to 2018 exhibition And we finally reach the final and present exhibition. In conclusion, Harry Chan has displayed his artwork ‘Disarrayment’ in our gallery when he finished it. We are the witness of the time has a big impact on the artwork. At the beginning, no one has noticed the beauty of the artwork. They have asked so many times what’s the meaning of the artwork since it has been displayed in out gallery. They starts to understand it more after stress and loneliness has become a normal feeling for everyday life. Audience starts to find the resonance with Harry Simpson. His work becomes famous. People starts to value his artwork, the price rised. However, Harry Chan doesn’t have a chance to sell it. He passed away. It’s such a pity. Then his work was kept in our gallery for years. People asked to buy it ,we refused. Because of the unfortune and revolution, there is only one artwork left in the gallery. We want to share the great and precious artwork with people to remember Harry Chan.

Harry Simpson

[Disarrayment]-2000 

“InDisarraymentI investigate of value, self-identity and loneliness through the production of my new acrylic paint series. This project is a representation of some 21-century people, they are special as well as lonely. It’s hard for them to find a a group of people who are similar to each other among the world. They are independent which means they think in a different way. This leads them to a different way. These paints are showing their difference and isolation of these kind of human beings.

The two lines are highlighted in the broad surface, by the contrasting colours and sizes which distinguish them from the background. Different colours of the line also represents the skin colour of these people. It’s a global issue rather than happens to individuals. These strong colours will convey a strong message of emotions. I am interested of showing the hopelessness and loneliness of human that is universal. ”

After Simpson’s death, his work becomes more famous because of the resonance that audience find which can relate to themselves in 2006. The bright colour and strong contrast between the space also is the empty space in their hearts. Those lines which look like in order, but they are outstanding compare to the background. They are the disarray ones among the whole area.

Unfortunately, the first work is lost due to the safety issue five years ago.

The second work is damaged by the some insects three years ago.

The third work is burnt due to the fire that caused by some criminals.

This is the only artwork that left in the world in 2013.

Because of the culture revolution, the artwork of Harry Simpson was nearly destroyed. Fortunately, some staff has buried the artwork into the ground to save the artwork. Although we tried to reduce the impact of the environment, the work has changed colour due to the experience it has. Therefore, it’s not only an artwork showing the loneliness of human beings in that period of time, but also the record of history. It’s the evidence of the culture revolution and the type of artwork exists around that time.

Biography

Harry Simpson was born in asia in 1974 and moved to Sydney in 1980. He grew up in the campus that is built for the immigrants like him. The life on the campus has a big influence on him. His childhood is lonely and boring. He sees the small world that he can see in the campus. He wondered what’s world looks like outside the campus. After he gets into university, he finds that he is different to most of people that grow in the city. This is what makes him think about his work. In 1998, he starts to practice on his work. His work wasn’t famous after the publishing. After his death, the audience suddenly discovery the beauty of his work, then they become popular. His work has been exhibited to different countries and loved by most of the people.

Plan for the presentation

Nicole will paint behind the curtain.

2000(25 years old)-2015(40years old) Auction happens each five years.

First time 200 Dollors but no one buys it.

Second time 100 Dollors but no one buys it.

Third time 0 Dollors but no one buys it.

Forth time there is four art works, the forth one is finished by the artist before she dies.

Then the price raise to 2000 AUD each.The person who buys it destroys the other three artwork and claims there is only one left in the world.

Fifth Time the artwork is auctioned again, 100,000 AUD.

During the transport it was lost. Someone picks it up and use it to clean the window.

Statement: The concept is about the opposite binary of ‘Life and death’. As dolphins have saved lots of lives, they change the state of those human from dying to living. However, the people in Japan has a traditional festival which last for half a year to slaughter the dolphins. During that period, the coast is all in red. The ocean was blue, clear and peaceful while at that time it’s a living hell. Dolphins give human the hope of living, however, human bring darkness of death. I research on how the dolphins help drowning human, protect them from sharks and save them from the holes in the ocean. No matter where they are, they don’t care what gender you are, what colour of skin you have or how old you are,, they will save you anyway. While the Japanese kill them no matter how they care their family, as dolphins are social animals, they take care of their group, they are not going to escape the slaughter. Both creatures shows their altitude towards life. Dolphins are interested in saving lives, while human will follow ‘tradition’ to kill the other lives without respect.

I am inspired by some artists. With Shaun Gladwell’s Apologies 1-6(2007-2009). In this work, I find he shows the respect towards the dead animal no matter he rides a black motor and dress in black colour. He interacts with the animal by cradling it. That’s why I draw how dolphins rescue human in the sea and help them find a safe place. These interaction shows that the dolphins love human beings, it is shown in their behaviours. Audrey Newton’s 4Eva also have some influence on me. It uses plastics and other manmade material to present an idea of dying flowers. I still see the flowers as life. For me, this represents how human has affected other natural creatures. In this artwork ,the flower petal is twisting and broken. It’s also corrosive and dry. The life is losing the energy to live. Just as dolphins, they are killed by the human, I believe they will start to lose the belief in human. And Gordon Bennett’s Angels gives me an idea of equality. Both black skin angel and white skin angel are valued. Then the dolphins and even other creatures should be equal to human and respected by human. We should find a way to live together without harm the other species.

The background is a map, a map can indicate where the stories happened. The size of postcard and stamp on it can make the graphs look like postcard from the dolphins all over the world. They proudly telling their families what they have done on the back of the postcard. I also paint all the materials with coffee to make the work look aged and the mark of coffee also forms a mark on it to show it’s related to water which may spread the ink. The more far away it happens, the more darker the postcard is. Six of the cards are mainly painted in blue as it’s a colour of ocean and it suggests calm and free for dolphins. There is a white side around the paint to show that these scene can be reward and remember. However, there is a only card painted in dark red because it’s showing human beings has killed many dolphins that the ocean is also becoming red. Red give a signal of warning, confronting and violence. I also make it looks like a photo without the white frame to show it’s likely from camera or news. The stamp is also in red to convey the idea of scary and hopelessness. The dolphin is also doubting itself. In the six graphs, there are more details of dolphin compare to human to indicates that the dolphins are the main characters. But in the red one ,the dolphins are not clear, it only shows the red ocean. This conveys that they have been slaughtered in huge amount. In addition, I painted the human in different colours of skin and hair to explain the idea of they are inclusive to human. They treat every human in danger equally.

I have finished the post card drawing and putting the coffee on these stuff to make them look aged.

The map and the first post is using concentrated coffee and then the coffee is diluted.

I also make the only one of slaughtering dolphins stand out with the red stamp.

The words on the back is showing the attitude are always proud when dolphins saved human.

But when human kill dolphins, "I" start to doubt myself.

It may not be the experiment of the work.

From the stories, I have mapped where they happened on the map.

In the book ‘The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry’ by Rachel Joyce, Harold has walked toward Queenie and the nuns in the hospital has record his routine with the postcard he sent her.

Similarly, I want to present the idea of where it happen.

What’s more, This kind of form also presents in the crime scene which the police can link the crime with the place. As I believe the slaughter of dolphins is a kind of crime and the dolphins provide the evidence of how they have saved human so many times.

In 2002, a 36-year-old Australian man named Grant Dickson was fishing in northern Queensland along with other people. Hours later the vessel collapsed in the water, and Dickson found himself alone in the middle of the ocean, holding only to the remainings of the boat. He had some wounds bleeding profusely, and with horror, he discovered a group of sharks swimming around him. However, he watched with amazement how a pod of dolphins began to circle him, scaring away the sharks they might have attacked them by confusing his legs with some prey because of the blood. In the end, Grant Dickson was rescued safe and sound.

Several years ago, in the Gulf of Akaba, a British tourist was rescued by three dolphins from sharks. Near the Sinai Peninsula, a ship captain had stopped his boat so several passengers could watch dolphins playing. Three of the passengers decided to swim with them, and one stayed a little longer than the others. To his horror, he was bitten by a shark – and more were coming. Suddenly, three dolphins placed themselves between the tourist and the sharks, smacking the water with their tails and flippers, driving the sharks off until the crew rescued the man
