‼ this chapter contains allusions to self-harm and very poor mental health. jealousy and possessiveness.
nico let out a big sigh as he stared at his phone screen, your message sitting there right on top of the wallpaper of him and euijoo. no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t wrap his head around it. it felt so simple. so what if he wanted euijoo to work at the thrift shop? he was his best friend, after all. so why couldn’t you get that?
after closing the door behind him, he stepped into fuma’s apartment. slouching into a chair at the kitchen island, he rested his forehead against the cool countertop, needing a moment. he could hear laughter behind him—fuma and k.
“yo, what’s wrong?” fuma chuckled, giving him a firm and harsh pat on the back that made nico sit up straight. k plopped down next to him, mimicking his posture with a teasing smirk.
“dude, it’s—” nico sighed, trying to explain, “it’s complicated.”
“let me guess…” k hummed, rubbing his chin like he was thinking hard, “y/n?”
nico nodded, glancing toward the door just as euijoo walked in, his smile lightening in the mood a bit.
“hi,” euijoo smiled, making his way over to the trio.
they greeted him with a “hey,” but euijoo could tell something was off. he frowned slightly as he looked at nico, picking up on the tension.
“let me show you to your room,” k said, getting up and giving nico’s back a light slap. “yuma’s gonna regret moving out,” he joked, making euijoo laugh a little as they headed down the hallway together.
once they were gone, fuma slid into the chair k had just emptied, a look of concern on his face. “what happened this time?” he asked nico, curious as to why he had looked so distressed.
nico placed his chin on his palm, looking at fuma. “it was normal, y’know? she invited me over, so i went,” fuma nodded, listening attentively. “then she brought him up.” fuma nodded again, getting the hint. you were jealous of euijoo.
“she got like… like all mad at me, acting like me requesting him was a big deal?” nico sighed, burying his face in his hands. “i just don’t get it anymore… and i said something stupid,” he mumbled, feeling ashamed of his past words.
“what’d you say?” fuma asked, giving him a friendly pat on the back this time. “i told her it felt like she didn’t want me to have other friends,” nico admitted with a deep breath.
“well you aren’t wrong,” fuma reassured him, and nico’s eyes widened as he lifted his head from his hands and turned to face him. “look, i know she’s your best friend or whatever… but, she’s like got some issues weno,” fuma carefully chose his words, he knew you were a sensitive topic for nico. no matter how badly you two fought, nico always stood up for you, never letting anyone say anything bad about you.
“dude don’t talk about her like that,” nico snapped. fuma nodded, realizing he hadn’t been careful enough with what he said.
“look, i care about you a lot, weno, you know that. but it’s just always the same with y/n. you’ve known euijoo your whole life, but y/n? you’ve known her for less than half of that. you shouldn’t feel like you have to prioritize her just because she manipulates you,” fuma blurted out, no longer holding back. it's time nico heard the truth.
“you don’t get it,” nico’s voice was flat, his eyes serious as they always were when he defended you. “she’s not manipulating me.” fuma let out a tired sigh, knowing that no amount of explaining would get through to nico right now. instead, he nodded, pretending to understand, while feeling frustration build up.
fuma had always felt something was off about you. at first, it seemed innocent—a girl trying to get nico’s attention, nothing too unusual. but as time passed, fuma started to notice things. the way you pushed yourself into nico’s life felt different. he remembered the first big fight you two had, feeling guilty that his friend was getting used so easily. everyone else teased him, saying he was just jealous nico had a girl interested in him, but that was far from the truth.
then there was that night. nico came home looking beyond broken, tears staining his cheek and traces of dried lip gloss smudged on his neck. no one else knew what happened. nico never dared to tell anyone what he did. but fuma was there, laying in the living room when nico stumbled in at four in the morning. “she…” nico’s voice cracked, the pain peeking through his tone, “she had…” he paused, the weight of his truth, the weight of what he saw, crushing him, “all over her arms.” in that moment, fuma felt himself feel sick. he could feel whatever nico felt and more, wishing he could take away whatever you just made him witness go away.
“we’re gonna stop by the university; i need to check in on something about my schedule or whatever,” euijoo’s voice shattered the painfully loud silence—one that fuma remembered all too well from that night. “yeah, okay,” nico cleared his throat, turning back to the front door. he gave k and euijoo a small wave before they left.
fuma felt like he was in a trance, unable to shake his thoughts of that night. did nico feel this way, too? had he ever replayed it in his mind?
nico had. both boys were caught in the same memory. nico pushed it down, deep down, where he had to drink afterwards to forget your arms that night. shaking his head, he finally stood up, his legs feeling weak. fuma noticed. there wasn’t a physical trace of you on nico that went unnoticed by him.
“you should…” fuma hesitated, his eyes fixed on the countertop, “introduce them, and make sure she knows her place.” nico nodded. while fuma couldn’t see it, he knew.
you spent that passing week training euijoo, and honestly, you couldn’t stand him at all. he was the complete opposite of nico, and you couldn’t understand how nico could tolerate him. euijoo’s bubbly, overly calm personality made you want to roll your eyes. his kindness felt so fake, and everyone sensed your annoyance.
from behind the cash register, nico watched you and euijoo, clearly catching on to the argument forming between you two.
“oh my god, that’s not even how you do it! do you even listen to what i say?” you snapped, unable to hold back your irritation. euijoo shook his head, towering over you like he was trying to intimidate you. the boy’s sweet face couldn’t ever intimidate anyone.
“how do you expect me to know anything when all you do is say backhanded shit?” euijoo replied, his palm pressed to his forehead. nico stayed frozen at the cash register, eyes narrowing as he tried to figure out how this whole thing spiraled so quickly.
“what do you want me to say? that you’re doing good? because you aren’t!” you voice was low, but the tension was thick enough for customers to glance over. everyone was able to sense that something was off between you two, even if they couldn’t hear the fight.
“okay, if i’m so terrible, why haven’t i been fired? why’d they even hire me?” euijoo answered, confusion and hurt mixing in his voice. you couldn’t believe this guy thought there was a chance he was as good as nico had claimed.
you rolled your eyes for what felt like the hundredth time. “you think i want you here? the only reason you got hired is because nico wouldn’t shut up about. we don’t want you here,” you spat, leaving the bins the same mess euijoo had to organize, proving your point that he didn’t have high effort.
weeks dragged on, and it felt like you were living in a nightmare with all the arguments between you and euijoo at the store. every time soobin dropped another complaint about how useless euijoo was, it made you want to quit.
the more euijoo hung around, the closer he got to nico, and it drove you insane. you had to admit you couldn’t train euijoo anymore, so off he went, clinging to nico while you were fueled with anger and jealousy. every day, you’d see them cracking up together while stocking or organizing racks, and it felt like a bullet to your skull. nico had never laughed like that with you. not once. it was like every giggle pulled him further from you, and honestly, it hurt more than any other heartbreak.
it then hit a new low. nico began apologizing like it was a habit, saying he couldn’t see you after class because “euijoo needed him”. what a joke. it was like euijoo couldn’t function without nico. fridays then turned into “boys' day,” and suddenly he just had no time for you. you had plans for his sister’s birthday, a family dinner. it was a chance to finally be with nico without euijoo, and somehow, euijoo forced his way into that too. you couldn’t take it anymore, euijoo third wheeling you two, so you canceled. nico didn’t even ask you why; it was like he didn’t even care. you felt him slipping more and more, and you could think was that this was all euijoo’s fault.
the jealousy was familiar, like it was something you were used to. remembering the girl who confessed to nico. you couldn’t shake that memory from your head. when you found out, it felt like he ripped out your heart and tossed it into a blender. you called him over after maki told you, desperate to know what he said. you were determined: she couldn’t have him. later that night, you were a mess. you cried to nico all night, spilling everything you felt—confused, frustrated, and scared. it was like you were going in a nonstop circle to purposefully feel the nausea and dizziness. you didn’t know what was wrong with you that night; you did things you swore you’d never do before that day. all you knew was that you needed nico to see you like this, vulnerable for him. you needed a reaction out of him.
you laid in nico’s bed, your head resting on his chest, feeling safe and warm, yet there was this pit in your stomach. it was the first time you had come over since euijoo moved in, and things felt out of place. you weren’t sure if anyone was home, but honestly, you didn’t care at all; being close to nico was all that mattered.
nico shifted beneath you, propping himself on his elbows, looking at you with that serious expression you’d only seen a few times. it made your heart race. “hey, can we talk?” he mumbled, and you nodded, forcing a soft smile even though you could feel something wasn’t right. you wanted to ignore whatever you gut was feeling and enjoy the time the two of you finally had.
“i’m.. i’m gonna be gone for a bit,” he finally blurted out, his eyes searching your as he was trying to find the right words. your heart sank, and suddenly the room felt heavy. “me and euijoo, we’re going to hawaii for a bit,” he added, his tone so casual like this wasn’t breaking you apart.
you went completely still, like a wave had crashed over you, making it hard to breathe. nico noticed the tears welling in your eyes and brushed a stray strand of hair behind your ear, his touch both soothing and infuriating. he knew exactly how you’d react, and that’s why he had hesitated to say anything. but his trip being in just a few days, he could keep it from you any longer; it hurt him, but he knew how possessive you’d be if you knew.
“you’re leaving me?” you barely whispered, your voice cracking as a single tear rolled down your cheek. nico’s thumb brushed against it, gentle, but he shook his head, eyes wide with concern. you couldn’t help but look down at his lap, feeling everything slip away.
“no, no y/n,” he reassured you, almost a plea, like he wanted to take his words back. his lips were pressed together, holding back all the things he didn’t want to say. “it’s just like when i go on trips with maki’s family,” he added, inching closer. but instead of feeling comforted, you inched back, feeling his hand slide away from your cheek. you were sabotaging the moment for no reason.
“no… you’re leaving me, nico,” you shook your head, a knot forming in your stomach. deep down, you knew this was coming; you just got way too comfortable in his arms.
“it’s just a short trip, y/n,” he sighed, his hand landing softly on your thigh, trying to comfort you the only way he knew how. he knew you needed touch, but his touch set off the tears again, and before you knew it, you were crying on his bed.
nico wrapped his arms around you, his hold soft and unsure, like he was trying to hold you together. your sobs echoed through his closed bedroom door; outside, only fuma was home, and he had a pretty good idea of what was going down again. it was a pattern, something everyone had recognized but couldn’t escape.
“i don’t want you to be sad, y/n,” he murmured quietly, rubbing your back in gentle circles. as nice as it felt, it didn’t shake your doubts of him and euijoo away. leaning your head on his chest, you curled up closer to him. usually, having you this close was normal, but somehow tonight it felt different—more intense.
you nodded weakly, your throat tight, holding back words running through your head and stuck somewhere in your chest. you were scared of saying too much; it might push him away even more. so, all you could manage was a quiet sniffle as you leaned closer to his embrace.
