inherently flawed, that logic ; he could point out the obvious, like the children in london's streets driven to crime solely due to the cruelty of the masters themselves, or those who have consistently tried to do good only to be stopped at the claws of a bat touting the importance of controlled industry. elysium's expression is nothing short of judgmental in its own way, glancing its way to watch the bulk of its cloaks as it drags its heels alongside him in their slow walk of spite.

much of the populace here is what he supposes mr irons would coin to be criminal, how spite makes up the most of london's downtrodden populace. he doesn't need to ask which one he is, at the very least ; regardless of where they stand now, he had near burned the bazaar to its roots once, and had never once apologized for the chaos that had come after. surrounded by a court of masters, he'd held his tongue on how he'd plea, and the only thing he had to show for it was that given the chance, he'd have done it again.

there is a fascinating counter, though, and he can't help but wonder —

however much their lessers may beloathe it's recent sparkling record of attendance, caminus has never run smoother 'neath its careful claw than when assisted by his biting tongue. so rare an occasion it was that a decision made in the heat of the moment actually works in its favor—or at least, one that it actively hopes for. truth be told, it didn't really have any expectations when its eyes first set on him after their last misfortune ; simply that he might survive a little longer, spare a shred of competence that it's employ more oft than not seemed to lack ... to say it is anything less than pleasantly surprised would be just untrue. he's much more than that, though, competent—he's fiery, witty, frequently scathing ... and it likes that very much, the bizarre balance he makes in efficiency and personality.

even rarer that it seems to catch his interest with its demands, there's hardly so much as a hint of vitriol it can detect rolling from his tongue. far be it to waste the opportunity.

" this is a task better fitting more delicate hands. rather, i trust them less than i trust you. do you see why this might be an important distinction? " this is more in line with what's expected : its soft purr as it bows a little closer, stretching an arm outward to curl its fingers loosely 'round the slight shape of his wrist. " it really isn't difficult ... tell me, would you consider yourself swift on your feet? "

part of him honestly wonders if mr fires perhaps thinks he's a fucking idiot, though it's by the thinnest of margins he holds his tongue against voicing as much. that's already rare for him, but it's not as if it has his dripping approval either. there's a subtle wrinkle in his nose that gives away ... what, his disgust? maybe just how difficult it is for him not to take the piss when the opportunity is presented. he'd be an idiot not to think this is anything less than threatening, no matter what it says in its own defense. the masters of the bazaar are not people the average londoner should have any want to be entangled with. the only thing worse than this particular scenario, from his understanding, would be if it were mr veils' putting mysterious offers on the table. he doesn't know the rest of them personally, though. really does not want to.

"some of the most clever men in london have frequently been led to their undoing by you, specifically, never mind the masters as a whole." he doesn't think there is a proper way to use anything the master's gift any of the city's citizens. from kings to paupers, they're all expendable under the claws of creatures who didn't belong on this planet with them. adrien leans back in his seat with arms crossed over his chest. he looks almost comically petulant across its massive, freakishly jolly build. mr fires has always been strangely uncanny, even 'neath the cloaks ...

"oh, fuck me. what could i have possibly done in my unlife to be cursed with the misfortunate of earning your trust?" he groans, untangling one arm just as quickly as he'd settled to lean down in the chair, palm spreading 'cross his face. he drags it down 'til his fingers pinch his nose, brows furrowed. had he been particularly foul in a past life? how old he is, perhaps he had sinned in the earliest eras of the biblical age. this must be his punishment, then. his shift in posture seems to have been a mistake, though, how tense he becomes when its claws brush 'long the sliver of his wrist visible 'neath today's work jacket.

"am i swift on my feet? have you ever stepped foot into london's poorest districts? or its caitiff population, better yet." when he whips his head up to look at it with an incredulous, nearly offended glare, he realizes he can practically feel the ignorance in its purr. fucking rich assholes. "yes, i can run, if that's what you're asking. fight? not so much, at least, not against other kindred. caitiffs tend to be stronger than purebloods, but i'm ... " well. even by human standards, he's lithe but nowhere near athletic or healthily fed, to put it lightly. "what in the hell are you trying to ask me to do right now?"

depending on which era of the sherlock tales it has in mind, that really could go either way. moriarty is hardly any stranger to being incorporated in these tales, but mr shrouds is an odd addition 'gainst both the masters of the bazaar's wishes as well as sherlock holmes' own. it makes for a terrible phantom thief when incapable of hiding in plain sight, and quite ironically, it's not as adept in mr veils' skillset as the fledgling himself is ; but that makes sense, he supposes, when he'd needed to learn the tricks he had for survival, versus sitting atop the chain as an apex predator. what need had shrouds for secrecy when unraveling mystery?

"regardless of how it ends up handled, you can't just go in guns blazing. that's the problem with you romanticized - mafia types ... you climb so high on your own strength, you lack the subtlety of powerplay these days. you claim the giovanni were classier once, but you're such a brute." just like the rest of its peers, really. he rolls his eyes as he wanders the cobblestone 'neath bloodied symbols written 'pon spite's walls. it's correspondence, which he knows precious little about. never mind him being new to the city, this particular subject seems either a mystery to the city at large, or a touchy one to those who recognize it.

it's his calling card that'd been left at the scene of the initial crime, though. poor woman, thrown 'round the city with a piece of her left in each district. even had he murdered her, he'd never have been so brutal! he's not much of a killer these days, though. he's a thief, not a sadist. "what are the chances one of you are responsible for this? the masters do hate me quite a lot."

the look he fixes it with is unimpressed at best ; it shouldn't expect any different from him, though, when half his time spent at work these days is flitting 'tween passing judgements whilst sat on the opposite side of its desk or yelling at the workers running 'round its factory floor like rats. if he lacked attitude, suffice to say it would be a strange day at caminus yards, indeed. the only strange thing here is how curious he almost looks, torn 'tween the subtle wrinkle 'tween his brows as he furrows them and the thin press of his lips together. he's fighting within himself ... showing interest in its propositions is a dangerous game, and not always one that pays off.

sometimes he gives it an inch, and it runs for miles. most times, actually.

"aren't rewards from the masters of the bazaar usually a threat?" well, that much is true. even the puppets those among the masters managed to procure were hardly ever awarded for their efforts at the master's side. being so connected with them is insanely risky ; his own entanglement with mr fires isn't even of his free will, for the most part. still ... he can't remember the last time it threatened him. probably in karakorum, when it had not known him so personally as it seemed hellbent on in london now. "you don't usually ask me to procure items for you. isn't that your neddies' job?"

what a rare treat ... to be so personally threatened by the attention of one of the bazaar's MASTERS. oh, not just any old bat — perhaps had it been the sharpened claws of mr irons or, god willing, mr pages, there would be some argument that appealing to their more tempestuous but practical natures could foresee a meeting such as this turning even to the victim's favor. dankovsky is not so lucky, when a hush falls across both superior and nurse alike as the forebodding figure of mr veils steps forth to a group of parting kine. no one dares look it in the eye, of course, for what little good it would do.

mr veils is ill fit in settings such as this. even on its sparse outings to the more mundane places humanity saw fit to scurry about in the city, it drapes itself in such sophisticated silks. its eyes shine 'neath its namesake and, were it possible, even gleam in its excitement when it meets the unlucky object of its attention.

"daniil dankovsky." it's like an electric current rushes through the room when it calls out to him by name. masters of the bazaar are not known for recognizing their citizenry, especially those who are yet stranger to them. this is an enigmatic scene to witness, and a disturbing one for those who work alongside this human man. veils wastes no time in its hasty approach, arms clad with silk raising 'til there is little space between them, short of that which it reaches out to place its claw ... lightly ... on the tip ... of his nose. "Добро пожаловать в Лондон. you may finish meeting your peers another time, little rabbit. i wish to speak with you." there is an impression made by the tension surrounding them that he is not exactly being given a choice.

adrien wonders if it would say these things to him, had it known in the moment how truly awful the world has been to him. the subtleties of his expression are hard to read 'neath the scowls and glares he oft wears, but it's when he's at his most calm that tends to come off uncanny, like something not quite human, the corpse vampirism has made of him, perhaps. it's the most profound thing that's ever come out of mr fires mouth, and were he anyone else, he thinks it may even be sweet. it's certainly poetic, and he would be the first to admit he'd never pegged it for the capability to be so. his boss is a brute ... they both know it, no matter how desperately it tries to hide its blackened heart from him with honeyed flattery.

"so i'm just to suffer as the monster this world has made of me, is that it? there are no matters to be taken into my own hands, no way to escape the vile amalgamation i've been twisted into? even i was beautiful once, in my innocence. even you were. what kind of world is worth living in if it produces animals such as us?" his smile is sardonic at best when it quirks his lips, just short of blatantly disgusted.

its attempts to bond with him have gone so poorly since they started, but it's not like he can do anything. this is the closest it's ever gotten to sounding human, and it terrifies him. he doesn't want to imagine mr fires with feelings and empathy, least of all with desire to appeal to him specifically. he's never been so important to it before. why now?

"i've given more of my heart to this world than it's ever given back to me. so much i've contributed! i bet you can't recall a single thing, can you? you who should know me most of all, but you probably didn't even remember my name until you rifled through my employee files." he never elaborates, but his eyes linger 'pon stolen gas lamps as they pass, the very drag path he'd implemented, following him from karakorum to london ... "anyone can be unmade. we can be murdered, our brains can be damaged, our hearts taken from our chests. the embrace unmakes us humans. we die, to be reborn into something else. do you think the adrien you know now is the adrien who existed on the surface before the fourth? i've been unmade so many times, no one has experienced putting themselves back together again more than a man who survived the surface, the fall, and the unwanted affections of the city's cruelest master." he's not being cheeky, in spite of how smug he sounds. he hates himself. it shows. "i could kill myself, and i'd be unmade this very eve. we kindred-from-kine don't get second chances down here. just like that ... like we'd never even existed."
