hong sun - hwa was born to a comfortably well - off family in washington d.c. she was born to ji - eun hong , an anchor on cnn’s newsroom and yun - seok hong , an influential politician . she joined the family after her older sister , na - young . three years after sun - hwa was born , her parents welcomed their son and last child named geun into the family . once the hong family was complete , everything easily fell into place .
growing up , sun - hwa affectionately nicknamed sunnie , had everything that most children would have fought for , but she was never one to care about her family’s wealth . of course she can’t ignore it , especially considering that she attended some of the best schools from the moment she started kindergarten , but it hadn’t been a factor she cared to brag about . sunnie found joy in getting dirty with the kids next door , often roughing it up with them in their backyards , and going on adventures that required dirt and water . when she was six , sunnie began playing soccer , which is something she stuck with through high school .
academics were always important to her parents , so sunnie put her all into the education her parents afforded for her . it’s no surprise that she graduates from high school within the top five percent of her class , and with an acceptance to georgetown university in her back pocket . while at georgetown , sunnie was a social butterfly while studying international economics with a minor in psychology . again , sunnie does well at georgetown and graduates summa cum laude . on a small break from her academic career , it’s then that sunnie decides it’s time for her to get out of washington d.c. . like most twenty - two year olds , sunnie decides that new york city is her best bet , so she packs up everything and finds an apartment with the help of her parents .
within two months , sunnie finds a job but it’s nothing extravagant . she figures it’s enough while applying for grad schools , and she eventually quits the job when she snags an entry level human resources position at masters international . sunnie begins to balance her academics and work when she gets accepted into fordham university’s masters of science in management program , and graduates from the program within a year . shortly thereafter , due to her diligence and hard work , she is promoted to human resources manager by 2019 .

sunnie has been working at masters for two years now , and works within the human resources department . she is serious about her job , and she herself wonders how the hell most of them have gotten their jobs ( including herself lol ) . with sunnie being a relatively diligent worker , she’s someone who often stays late until her work is done .
thus , as she keeps herself awake with coffee and energy drinks , it’s no surprise that she meets james sullivan ( just a name so you guys can refer to him hehe full npc here ) from a neighboring department a little over nine months ago . he was twenty years her senior , and often worked late as well . initially , the two of them were nothing more than friends , often sharing the conference room while working and james often ensuring she safely got into a cab when they left .
their friendship develops into something more romantic within no time . their relationship became finding each other’s eyes in multi - department meetings , using underutilized staircases to sneak touches , and using burner emails to send illicit messages . it’s when they hookup in james’ office that sunnie realizes two things : one , james was married ( if the picture on his desk was any indication ) and two , he lied to her .
everything goes ‘ well ’ for them until somehow , their relationship is leaked to the entire office . it starts with hushed whispers when she comes into work , sticky notes with cruel messages stuck to her desk , and when she thinks there’s a friend meeting her in the lobby . . . an echoing slap from james’ wife .
when the affair gets exposed ( about two months ago ) it takes no time for james to lose his job , and sunnie is placed on leave as her fate is determined . she’s allowed to return after a week away , and returns to find that her office had been packed up and she was demoted to human resources generalist . her return to work isn’t a good one as she still faces a lot of ‘ quiet ’ bullying , especially as most of it stems from having all of the blame placed on her for breaking up a happy marriage .

soft girls rise ! a crybaby , but it’s not too bad KMFDNSF , especially with what swirls around her in the HR dept. you’ve probably caught her crying in a stairwell , in a bathroom stall , a conference room , or into her salad at lunch .
usually keeps herself out of the way , and doesn’t care to really know the drama around the office ( even though it’s literally her job to handle conflicts lol ) . she’s entirely focused on her work and has no intentions on pursuing a workplace romance , especially not after what has happened . she doesn’t like raising her voice and tears will well up in her eyes when someone asks for her to speak up .
SELF HARM CW she keeps her nails cut short because she has developed a tendency of digging her nails into her palms when she’s overwhelmed . will often pick the skin around her thumbnail until the skin breaks . END SELF HARM CW has a habit of messing with her hair even when there’s nothing wrong with it .
when she’s not hiding amongst a crowd at work , she’s really easy to get along with and really sweet . although she’s diligent with her work , this doesn’t mean that she won’t come out for an after work cocktail .
