The Demon, circa 1910. Illustrated by Alfred Eberling (Russian, 1872 – 1951)

This is an illustration for Lermontov’s "The Demon", which masterfully evokes the poem’s dark romanticism. The spectral figure looms over the sleeping woman, its presence both sinister and melancholic. Dramatic lighting heightens the tension, capturing the fatal allure of the Demon and the eerie inevitability of his tragic love.

Inspired by the work of H.R. Giger in 1979's Alien and 1995's Species, Hengdi Wang crafted jewellery for his Spring 2025 collection shown at Shanghai Fashion Week that is midway between human bone and insect/alien being, placed over models' bodies in a way as though it is taking them over - their heads, necks, and mouths.
