Karen loves the fact that the Byers are staying with them during the 18-months between s4-s5.

Partly due to Joyce actually helping her and caring about her feelings (just a simple "how are you?" from Joyce makes Karen feel cheerful and like she is seen).

But mainly seeing how Jonathan and Will present affects her oldest two children. She has also had a soft spot for the Byers boys, helping where she could during Lonnie's reign of terror and his departure. Also admiring Joyce's strength.

She sees that Nancy is less tense around Jonathan; his presence calms her. He listens to her talk and supports her. She also sees a softer side to her eldest daughter, how Nance gently holds his hand or strokes his hair. They love and care for each.

With her son, he is less moody with Will back. Not lashing out in anger, not as sullen around people. He smiles again and laughs. But the biggest thing is that Mike eats again, the whole plate, no fights about it, no shouting at that table.

Karen loves the Byers brothers for many reasons and is very pleased when she can call them her son-in-laws
