While movie box office revenue took a -66% dive last year, some interesting areas show impressive growth in this multitrillion-dollar industry. Digital newspaper revenue saw a 10% increase, video game revenue saw a 6.9% lift in sales, and consumer books saw a 3.8% increase. The esports industry continues to see healthy growth in this segment, forecasted to reach $37 billion by 2024. It’s also poised for an ecommerce breakout, with up to 20% of food and beverage industry sales to be made online by 2025, a 10-times increase from 2016. Evaluating market demand and following trends is a great place to start when finding popular things to make and sell. Once you have a product, you’ll want tostart your business and set up a Shopify store with a free trial. And just like that, you’re ready to start selling! 2. Create a print-on-demand business Print on demand refers to working with a supplier to customize white-label products with your own designs, then selling them under your own brand. Businesses can create products like hats, t-shirts, tote bags, and more. The best part? You don’t have to pay for any products until after you make a sale, and the print-on-demand business is one of the most straightforward ways to make money online. When you work with a print-on-demand company, everything from printing the item to shipping is handled by the supplier. Once you set up an online store with your designs, it takes a few minutes to fulfill an order after the customer checks out. Creating a print-on-demand business is a great way to make money online for the following reasons: You can create products fast. After you design a product, you can put it up for sale on your website in minutes. You don’t have to worry about shipping. Your supplier will handle the fulfillment process. You’re just responsible for providing good customer service after the sale. It’s low risk, low investment. It’s easy to add new products to your store and test ideas, since you don’t hold any inventory. Your upfront business costs are minimal because you only need an online store to start. A print-on-demand business also gives creators many opportunities to connect with fans through nice products, especially products sought out for their aesthetic design. For all its products, the retailer focuses on one theme: bubble tea (also referred to as “boba”), a drink that originated in Taiwan in the early 1980s. Bubble tea has become extremely popular around the world and has a dedicated fan base. Boba Love sells shirts, totes, blankets, hats, and stickers around the idea of the drink. When a shopper orders a product from the store, the supplier creates and ships it to the customer. 3. Make a subscription box A subscription business provides customers with products on a recurring basis. The subscription ecommerce market is expected to reach $478 billion by 2025, with more customers taking advantage of it each year. Research from McKinsey found that 15% of US consumers have signed up for one or more subscriptions to receive products regularly. The benefits of creating a subscription box include: Predictable revenue. Businesses know how much money is coming in each month and can plan growth initiatives accordingly. More cash on hand. Subscription businesses ask for full payment upfront at a discounted price, which creates regular cash flow. Lower customer acquisition costs. Customers pay you on a regular basis, so you don’t need to convince them to make additional one-time purchases in your store. Running a subscription business from home is a proven winner. Our research shows that 63% of founders who sold subscriptions were satisfied with business performance, compared to 55% of founders who did not sell subscriptions. Two types of subscription businesses that we found thrived in the past year were: Replenishment model, where subscribers receive the same or similar products each cycle. An example of this would be grooming brand Harry’s. A customer purchases the Harry’s starter set, containing a handle, shaving gel, and razor cartridges. They then receive automatic gel and blade refills monthly, based on their usage and preferences. Membership model, where subscribers get access to exclusive products and perks in exchange for a monthly or yearly fee. Freelance writing community Peak Freelance runs on a membership model. Members pay a set fee and receive access to private Slack groups, on-demand tools and content, expert interviews, strategy sessions, and more. Want to start a subscription box business from home? Read How to Start a Subscription Business: A Brief Guide to learn how, step by step. 4. Sell on marketplaces Sell products on online marketplaces—but beware! Selling sites can be a great launchpad for many businesses, but the current marketplaces come with a Faustian bargain: you get access to customers if you build your business on someone else’s land. Their land, their rules—and they’ll change them at any time. Popular marketplaces include: Etsy Amazon eBay Handshake Mercado Libre Rakuten Facebook Marketplace VarageSale Eventually, you’ll want to diversify your business by building your own site—you don’t have to choose one or the other. The big advantage is that the profit is yours: there are no fees to pay on sales and no rules to abide by but your own. Resources: Ecommerce Business Blueprint: How to Build, Launch, and Grow a Profitable Online Store How to Create an Online Store 5. Sell digital products Digital products are intangible assets or pieces of media that can be sold repeatedly online. They come in the form of streamable or downloadable files, such as PDFs, plug-ins, and templates. For example, if you’re passionate about music and have experience teaching it, you can teach lessons online through your own course. Digital assets are becoming more popular because they have high profit margins. Sure, it may take some time and money to develop them, but once the media or software is made, it’s not expensive to store or deliver to customers. There is no limit to how many products you can sell. Digital products help creators scale themselves by using their expertise to create kits, printables, files, and other assets professionals can benefit from. As your online portfolio of digital products grows, you’ll naturally be in a better position to make more money from your own online store. UX Kits sells wireflows, user personas, flowcharts, and other products to assist the design process. The brand has sold kits to over 10,000 designers, developers, and product managers in more than 100 countries. It’s since expanded to sell three physical products but continues to drive sales from the digital assets created years ago. Digital products aren’t just for business professionals. Home fitness business Street Parking sells a variety of digital products—from workout plans to online courses—and membership subscriptions for people who need at-home workouts. Whatever you decide to create, figure out the needs of your target audience and work backward from there. Think about the kinds of assets they need/want and create products that are in demand. This will make it easier to sell and earn more money working from home. 6. Sell your creative work It’s easier than ever for creators to sell their work online. Whether it’s music, videos, digital art, photography, magazines, or podcasts, you can set up a digital shop and start selling with little limitation. While selling creative work sounds similar to digital products, the difference is that your products are more creative ventures. They are a way to express yourself online versus satisfying a buyer’s needs. Creators and artists who don’t have a network or connections with galleries and PR can now make money online doing something they love. What started as a cartoon on Instagram for Harry Hambley has grown into an international icon and ecommerce brand. As described in an interview with the BBC, the Ketnipz creator skipped university to draw cartoons online. And Hambley’s strategy certainly paid off. The Ketnipz brand has over 3.2 million followers on Instagram, sells clothing and accessories online, and can even be found on murals around the world. Using a combination of social media and an online store, you can make money online. Start building an active presence and engaging with your audience to establish your brand and find new customers. 22 Ways to Calm Yourself Down
We all worry and get upset from time to time. It’s a normal part of life. But what happens when that anxiety or anger takes over, and you can’t calm down? Being able to calm yourself in the moment is often easier said than done. That’s why having a few strategies you’re familiar with can help you when you’re feeling anxious or angry. Consider adding these calming tactics to your toolbox. Tips to calm down Here are some helpful, actionable tips you can try the next time you need to calm down. 1. Breathe “Breathing is the number one and most effective technique for reducing anger and anxiety quickly,” says Scott Dehorty, LCSW-C, of Delphi Behavioral Health. When you’re anxious or angry, you tend to take quick, shallow breaths. Dehorty says this sends a message to your brain, causing a positive feedback loop reinforcing your fight-or-flight response. That’s why taking long, deep calming breaths disrupts that loop and helps you calm down. There are various breathing techniques to help you calm down. One is three-part breathing. Three-part breathing requires you to take one deep breath in and then exhale fully while paying attention to your body. Once you get comfortable with deep breathing, you can change the ratio of inhalation and exhalation to 1:2 (you slow down your exhalation so that it’s twice as long as your inhalation). Practice these techniques while calm so you know how to do them when you’re anxious. 2. Admit that you’re anxious or angry Allow yourself to say that you’re anxious or angry. When you label how you’re feeling and allow yourself to express it, the anxiety and anger you’re experiencing may decrease. 3. Challenge your thoughts Part of being anxious or angry is having irrational thoughts that don’t necessarily make sense. These thoughts are often the “worse-case scenario.” You might find yourself caught in the “what if” cycle, which can cause you to sabotage a lot of things in your life. When you experience one of these thoughts, stop and ask yourself the following questions: Is this likely to happen? Is this a rational thought? Has this ever happened to me before? What’s the worst that can happen? Can I handle that? After you go through the questions, it’s time to reframe your thinking. Instead of “I can’t walk across that bridge. What if there’s an earthquake, and it falls into the water?” tell yourself: “There are people that walk across that bridge every day, and it has never fallen into the water.” 4. Release the anxiety or anger Dehorty recommends getting the emotional energy out with exercise. “Go for a walk or run. in some physical activity serotonin to help you calm down and feel better.” However, you should avoid physical activity that includes the expression of anger, such as punching walls or screaming. “This has been shown to increase feelings of anger, as it reinforces the emotions because you end up feeling good as the result of being angry,” Dehorty explains. 5. Visualize yourself calm This tip requires you to practice the breathing techniques you’ve learned. After taking a few deep breaths, close your eyes and picture yourself calm. See your body relaxed, and imagine yourself working through a stressful or anxiety-causing situation by staying calm and focused. By creating a mental picture of what it looks like to stay calm, you can refer back to that image when you’re anxious. 6. Think it through Have a mantra to use in critical situations. Just make sure it’s one that you find helpful. Dehorty says it can be, “Will this matter to me this time next week?” or “How important is this?” or “Am I going to allow this person/situation to steal my peace?” This allows the thinking to shift focus, and you can “reality test” the situation. “When we’re anxious or angry, we become hyper-focused on the cause, and rational thoughts leave our mind. These mantras give us an opportunity to allow rational thought to come back and lead to a better outcome,” Dehorty explains. 7. Change your focus Leave the situation, look in another direction, walk out of the room, or go outside. Dehorty recommends this exercise so you have time for better decision making. “We don’t do our best thinking when anxious or angry; we engage in survival thinking. This is fine if our life is really in danger, but if it isn’t life threatening, we want our best thinking, not survival instincts,” he adds. 8. Have a centering object When you’re anxious or angry, so much of your energy is being spent on irrational thoughts. When you’re calm, find a “centering object” such as a small stuffed animal, a polished rock you keep in your pocket, or a locket you wear around your neck. Tell yourself that you’re going to touch this object when you’re experiencing anxiety or frustration. This centers you and helps calm your thoughts. For example, if you’re at work and your boss is making you anxious, gently rub the locket around your neck. 9. Relax your body When you’re anxious or angry, it can feel like every muscle in your body is tense (and they probably are). Practicing progressive muscle relaxation can help you calm down and center yourself. To do this, lie down on the floor with your arms out by your side. Make sure your feet aren’t crossed and your hands aren’t in fists. Start at your toes and tell yourself to release them. Slowly move up your body, telling yourself to release each part of your body until you get to your head. 10. Drop your shoulders If your body is tense, there’s a good chance your posture will suffer. Sit up tall, take a deep breath, and drop your shoulders. To do this, you can focus on bringing your shoulder blades together and then down. This pulls your shoulders down. Take a few deep breaths. You can do this several times a day. 11. Identify pressure points to calm anger and anxiety Going for a massage or getting acupuncture is a wonderful way to manage anxiety and anger. But it’s not always easy to find time in your day to make it happen. The good news is, you can do acupressure on yourself for instant anxiety relief. This method involves putting pressure with your fingers or your hand at certain points of the body. The pressure releases the tension and relaxes your body. One area to start with is the point where the inside of your wrist forms a crease with your hand. Press your thumb on this area for two minutes. This can help relieve tension. How to calm down in 5 minutes If you’re short on time but need to calm down fast, these quick in-the-moment tips can help. 12. Get some fresh air The temperature and air circulation in a room can increase your anxiety or anger. If you’re feeling tense and the space you’re in is hot and stuffy, this could trigger a panic attack. Remove yourself from that environment as soon as possible and go outside — even if it’s just for a few minutes. Not only will the fresh air help calm you down, but also the change of scenery can sometimes interrupt your anxious or angry thought process. 13. Fuel your body Being hangry never helps. If you’re hungry or not properly hydrated, many relaxation techniques won’t work. That’s why it’s important to slow down and get something to eat — even if it’s just a small snack. Try nibbling on some dark chocolate. ResearchTrusted Source shows it can help boost brain health and reduce stress. Wash it down with a cup of green tea and honey. Studies show green tea can help reduce the body’s stress response. Research has found that honey can help relieve anxiety. 14. Chew gum Chewing on a piece of gum can help reduce anxiety (and even boost mood and productivity). In fact, research shows people who chew gum regularly are typically less stressed than non-gum chewers. 15. Listen to music The next time you feel your anxiety level cranking up, grab some headphones and tune in to your favorite music. Listening to music can have a very calming effect on your body and mind. 16. Dance it out Get moving to your favorite tunes. Dancing has traditionally been used as a healing art. ResearchTrusted Source shows it’s a great way to combat depression and anxiety and increase quality of life. 17. Watch funny videos Sometimes laughter really is the best medicine. Research has found that laughing provides therapeutic benefits and can help relieve stress and improve mood and quality of life. Do a quick internet search to find funny videos for an instant mood boost. 18. Write it down If you’re too angry or anxious to talk about it, grab a journal and write out your thoughts. Don’t worry about complete sentences or punctuation — just write. Writing helps you get negative thoughts out of your head. 19. Squeeze a stress ball When you’re feeling stress come on, try interacting with a stress-relief toy. Options include: stress ball magnetic balls sculpting clay puzzles Rubik’s cube fidget spinner 20. Try aromatherapy Aromatherapy, or the use of essential oils, may help alleviate stress and anxiety and boost mood. Those commonly used in aromatherapy include: bergamot cedarwood chamomile geranium ginger lavender lemon tea tree Add a few drops of essential oil to a diffuser, or mix it with a carrier oil (like coconut oil) and apply to your skin for quick relief. 21. Seek social support Venting to a trusted friend, family member, or coworker can do wonders. Even if you don’t have time for a full play-by-play phone call, a quick text exchange can help you let it all out and help you feel heard. Bonus points if you engage with a funny friend who can help you laugh for added stress relief. 22. Spend time with a pet Interacting with your favorite furry friend can decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol and lower blood pressure. Quality time with a pet can also help you feel less alone and boost your overall mood. Read the full article
Anger management: 10 tips to tame your temper
Do you fume when someone cuts you off in traffic? Does your blood pressure rocket when your child refuses to cooperate? Anger is a common and even healthy emotion. But it's important to deal with it in a positive way. Uncontrolled anger can take a toll on both your health and your relationships. Ready to get your anger under control? Start by considering these 10 anger management tips. 1. Think before you speak In the heat of the moment, it's easy to say something you'll later regret. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts before saying anything. Also allow others involved in the situation to do the same. 2. Once you're calm, express your concerns As soon as you're thinking clearly, express your frustration in an assertive but nonconfrontational way. State your concerns and needs clearly and directly, without hurting others or trying to control them. 3. Get some exercise Physical activity can help reduce stress that can cause you to become angry. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a brisk walk or run. Or spend some time doing other enjoyable physical activities. 4. Take a timeout Timeouts aren't just for kids. Give yourself short breaks during times of the day that tend to be stressful. A few moments of quiet time might help you feel better prepared to handle what's ahead without getting irritated or angry. 5. Identify possible solutions Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolving the issue at hand. Does your child's messy room make you upset? Close the door. Is your partner late for dinner every night? Schedule meals later in the evening. Or agree to eat on your own a few times a week. Also, understand that some things are simply out of your control. Try to be realistic about what you can and cannot change. Remind yourself that anger won't fix anything and might only make it worse. 6. Stick with 'I' statements Criticizing or placing blame might only increase tension. Instead, use "I" statements to describe the problem. Be respectful and specific. For example, say, "I'm upset that you left the table without offering to help with the dishes" instead of "You never do any housework." 7. Don't hold a grudge Forgiveness is a powerful tool. If you allow anger and other negative feelings to crowd out positive feelings, you might find yourself swallowed up by your own bitterness or sense of injustice. Forgiving someone who angered you might help you both learn from the situation and strengthen your relationship. 8. Use humor to release tension Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Use humor to help you face what's making you angry and, possibly, any unrealistic expectations you have for how things should go. Avoid sarcasm, though — it can hurt feelings and make things worse. 9. Practice relaxation skills When your temper flares, put relaxation skills to work. Practice deep-breathing exercises, imagine a relaxing scene, or repeat a calming word or phrase, such as "Take it easy." You might also listen to music, write in a journal or do a few yoga poses — whatever it takes to encourage relaxation. 10. Know when to seek help Learning to control anger can be a challenge at times. Seek help for anger issues if your anger seems out of control, causes you to do things you regret or hurts those around you. Read the full article
10 Money Habits to Make you Prosperous
How are you with your money? Are you in good financial shape? If not, it's likely due to your habits. According to Entrepreneur.com's, Ayodeji Onibalusi, "rather than create resolutions each year that may not stick, a good alternative is to develop positive habits instead. Especially when the category is financial life." He adds, "from learning a new skill every day to hitting the gym regularly, habit takes away the one singular thing that prevents us from getting things done -- resistance. With good habits, we no longer resist. We just do it." So how do you create habits and make them stick? Author, James Clear believes you must follow the three R's. He breaks down habit formation into three steps: reminder (what triggers the behaviour); routine (the habit itself) and reward (what you get from this behaviour). By learning and implementing the following 10 habits, your result will be a more financially secure and enjoyable life. 1. Be clear about your financial goals One habit you need to develop is clarity toward your goals. Your goals can shape your attitude toward whatever you do and put you in the right perspective about your financial life. Lack of clarity is equivalent to having no goals at all. "Clarity about your money goals is the first step towards getting your finances right," Yasir Khan, founder and chief editor at WealthKept.com, told me. "Getting your finances right -- being able to prioritize what you do with your money -- can only be achieved by clearing the unnecessary obligations out of the way." Developing a habit of being clear about your financial goals will also create a sense of focus, which is the psychological effect of setting goals. Let's assume your aim is to start your own business this year. You'll outline how much funding is required to do that, and how much you want to raise yourself. 2. Stop associating guilt with money One habit which keeps a person from growing financially is how he or she feels about money. A lot of people feel guilty, which is why they often find it difficult to discuss the financial terms of a business relationship before starting one. Develop a positive attitude toward money this year by overcoming any guilt you feel about money. 3. Seek more income sources The best way to improve your financial life this year is to use your free time to earn an extra income. Start by looking at areas where you can fill a need and earn extra money in the process. And make converting your spare time into income opportunities a habit. You could freelance for businesses or help people with things they can't do themselves. Khan said he was able to start two small businesses apart from his main job when he noticed he could use his free time to help others. Now that his side businesses are growing, he hires people to help him run the business. 4. Make clearing your debts a priority One of the biggest hindrances to financial growth is debt. The problem is that debt keeps compounding, making it your most expensive liability. Start paying off your debt with each paycheck you earn. By forming this habit, you could become debt-free by the end of the year. 5. Save to secure your future Make saving a habit this year. The more you save, the more you'll have when you retire. JPMorgan Chase puts together an annual guide to retirement that provides investment and savings strategies for all stages of life. 6. Separate friendship from business Underscore the purpose of your relationship with others, and make it a habit to always separate money from friendship and friendship from business. A lot of relationships have gone to ruin because of money. This year, be careful when forming business relationships. Make sure you know enough about someone before entering into such a relationship. Use background check tools like Check Them or Check People before a first meeting. Entering into a relationship with the wrong person could be costly or devastating to your financial life. 7. See money as a means, not an end Many people get the notion of money very wrong. Because we see money as the end goal, it affects our orientation about it. See money as what it is and what it's meant to be -- a tool, a means to an end. What the end is for every one of us may be different. For most, it might be happiness, while for others it's simply a comfortable lifestyle. 8. Seek advice from money experts Develop a habit of seeking advice before making any major financial decision. This will help you avoid making any decision you'll end up regretting. When you make a habit of seeking financial advice, you'll be less likely to take financial risks that could hurt your lifestyle. 9. Decide against impulse buying Make it a habit to spend only on things you need. Cut back on impulse buying by weighing your options before making any purchase. When you buy on impulse, you only gain a temporary sense of satisfaction. Once this instant gratification has worn off, what you're left with is a shrunken purse and a tinge of regret, or buyer's remorse. 10. Live below your means Many wealthy individuals mastered the habit of living below their means, even before they became hugely successful. A lot of wealthy individuals prefer to live a frugal lifestyle. Going frugal can help you create a financial lifestyle that's easily manageable. It can leave you with enough money and time to invest into your business and relationship. And that's what good money habits are all about. Thank you Ayodeji for the tips. So, which of the above habits will you implement today? Remember, the sooner you take action, the better. If you do, you'll be that much closer to the financially rewarding lifestyle you deserve.
