What I was thinking of.....
Often idle moments would make my mind track back over the years. My daughter caught me, on one such occasion, smiling to myself. Naturally she was curious and nothing short of a complete narration would satisfy her. I tried in my own way to explain things to her.
What I was thinking of…..
Of sparrows and crows. And neat hedgerows.
Of days shining bright. And dappled sunlight.
Of dancing in the rain, Again and again.
Of skipping in the street, In the summer heat.
Of friends who are dear, In a smile or a tear.
Of drummers in throes. Seeking blessings in rows.
Of mornings so calm, And studies irksome.
Of teachers who were - And will always be there.
Of lessons which were taught, Beyond books that we bought.
Of thoughts soaring high. And of time flying by!

Monsoon Diary 14.06.2017
Asansol 14.06.2017 Today it rained again after 14 days. The ants were right! They know when to be up and about! The rain started pretty indifferently! Scattered drops as would be when snapping a wet towel. But then the winds came and hurried the clouds into action. The last three & half hours show cased nearly all the tricks a thunderstorm can conjure. Wonder if the monsoons have arrived yet. The next few days will show. The babblers are back. Miss the sparrows greatly. The babblers are bigger and a lot more noisy. Their incessant racous chattering can be irritating at times. But today when I heard them quarreling about I realised that I had started missing them in the interim. Saw them fighting over some seeds with the local squirrels. Times change, things change. But bits of past, when they recurr, weave the thread of continuity which holds life together.

Asansol, 30.05.2017
It rained today, and boy how it rained today! Starting with an uncertain drizzle, it soon resolved into an intense downpour. There is always something pretty immersive about torrential rain as it comes down in sheets. The word immersive may be tossed about both ways here. Apart from literally doing what it implies, it also severs all visual connection one has with his surroundings. With sheets of water shimmering down which ever way one looks, the sense of isolation from one’s known surroundings is immediate. One becomes an island. The solitude is absolute and well, immersive.
The only sound is the constant drumming that “immerses” all other noise. It’s a relief of sorts, however, for the ears not to have to listen to the normal cacophony of urban sounds. In such situations my normal impulse is to look within, immerse myself in my memories and appreciate and feel thankful for whatever nuggets of gold I have stored there.
No rain experience is complete without getting thoroughly wet. Our balcony, facing south west, is always inundated in such rains. It’s the best place to get wet. The mango tree, at the front, which has been stubbornly growing wild for the past seven years or so, is yet to bear any fruit. We have all given up hopes of getting any fruits from it. Laden with dust and grime it wears a forlorn look, apparently saddened by it’s neglected status. However, it stubbornly refuses to give up, playing home to the numerous doves and pigeons that nest in it’s branches.
Today it whispers, murmurs and shows a high degree of animation as the water cascades down and the wind becomes playful. It no longer seems saddened by it’s own mundane existance. After the rains, washed of its grime, it will look fresh and new again, as if shining with new hope.
All this train of events and thoughts had been triggered by cyclone Mora. Rearing up in the Bay of Bengal it wreaked vengeance on Bangladesh. What we felt is just a watered down part of it. Lives were lost there, homes destroyed, people displaced. And for us it was just another downpour to bring some relief from the sweltering heat.
Dilemma!
Memories can be tricky. Some remain afresh over the years, while some simply fade away without any rhyme or reason. At least this has happened with me. Loose pages of notes often drift away neglected into convenient crevices and remain lost forever. One early snippet which stuck and I can still recollect is me begging my parents or elder sister to read out to me from a tattered illustrated book of the Ramayana. They sometimes obliged but often were too busy to be disturbed. The gods smiled and obliged, for before long I found the jumble of alphabets forming coherent words and sentences before my eyes. An entirely new world of treasure opened up before me. From being a beggar I became a king. I became a voracious reader. Being always on the prowl for something to read, I soon went through my school and local libraries. Then I started saving my pocket money to purchase books. But that was a lengthy process and the interminable periods, between when I could save a sufficient amount for a book I wanted, was pure agony. But the anticipation always carried me through and the fruits were definitely more sweet. When I started earning I decided to take a really measured, mature and selective approach to purchasing books. But I did not take into account the unfulfilled want of my earlier years when there always was a distinct gap between my demands and supplies. I ended up buying whatever I could lay my hands on. The sleepless nights extended but I was in pure bliss. Marriage added an impetus to my habit. My wife being an equal bookworm (blessings again). Now I had someone to discuss with and the books increased in number. Then the inevitable happened. We suddenly had to stop buying books, because simply put we have run out of space to store them. Had to find a way out. Last year my wife presented me with a Kindle. I was happy. My wife though stuck to her printed matter but I happily spend hours with my device. A few days back I picked up a journal of Ruskin Bond. No Kindle edition, so had to get it physically. Absolutely delightful stuff. In between however I just could not resist taking a sniff or two of the pages. Printing ink on the pages smell just divine! I discovered something else. A Kindle is a nice gadget, but except for the want of a wee bit of shelf space a printed book is definitely and infinitely better. Dilemma!
