this has been a historic salzburg festival for The People - the people being everyone who suffered under hinterhÀuser's ham-fisted era for long enough and is fucking fed up
*every* single show so far has ended in louder boo'ing than applause (and even during shows, things like people timing out dramatic rests to start angry chants). i can't even get into the bullshit that gabriela carrizo brought to currentzis's carmen, but it's clear that they're fucking. in a way that is good because maybe currentzis's 19 year old students are getting a break from his advances, but it is not good for art - bizarre attempt to jam an entire ballet into an entire fucking opera - gave the impression of someone shoving a whole bird into another bird and not even caring enough about their monstrosity to at least truss it for decorum's sake. chaotic mess
*every single book for every show* has had broken binding. one of my friends is a librarian for an orchestra. she brought her tools after what happened with our books the first night, and now during intermission she fixes the binding on our books. we meet new people via everyone wanting to have their jacked up bindings fixed
hinterhÀuser era ends in the exact same clumsy way as he was fired
Ernest Klausz's artistic portrayal of the 1933 production of La Damnation de Faust
bizarre, fascist looking military procession at salzburg. i was thinking "bayreuth or salzburg" but i didn't want to say it aloud because i was worried about it being insensitive, then my friend laid his head on my shoulder and said "if this were bayreuth would you save me from the nazis". unfortunately this is salzburg and no one can save us from literally currentzis and grirgoryan doing carmen this evening

glenn close is more adept at stage acting than the boundaries of talent should allow, but i'll never forgive sunset boulevard for rhyming "dark" with "dark". in the genuine, most famous, lead song of the show. i can't even fucking imagine the interaction that lead to that decision. "what rhymes with dark and means dark" "dark?" "genius"
i love software development so much :)
hello bitches, i had a fucking conniption for multiple days about bad shit and repeated code in the codebase. my supervisor gave me full permission to go nuclear with the conniption (read: spend a couple days abstracting some code). guess who has developed A Particular System that results in a 79% reduction in LOC for our most popular workflows and vastly improves readability of what particular controllers and services are doing
i'm thrilled with myself. when it's code that's largely like "copy/paste but add a couple new forms of custom validation or w/e" - i fully average 1000 LOC in a day. but when i am doing that work - i want to murder my own brains by stabbing my head on giant pike of icy metal. i am going to become so fucking powerful now that i never have to do this level of bullshit again. i rarely have to do it, but it nerfs my powers significantly. i'm lucky that i largely get assigned ~innovation~ work, but a shitty side effect of that is that we do have people on our team who happily plod along doing 400 LOC of this copy/paste grunt work, just because they have a weird tolerance for repetitive labor, and those of us who can't manage are assigned to "innovation" stuff, so there's this unfortunate result that the kind of work where there are a *ton* of requests for it, has had almost no innovation.
this is making me happy enough in a particular evil queen way (i BANISH the useless bullshit 1000 line service classes that replicate the same fucking logic for hundreds of lines) that i restarted work on it even after the kids went to bed, just out of joy. (the thing is done, but i want to have enough examples for the people who do the most of this kind of work, that they understand how extensible it is and pick it up, rather than them continuing to not use it, and this having to get escalated into us formalizing code review in a big way)
my favorite hobby is blocking men upon the very second that they act entitled to my time
i feed 1/8 of my chicken to my oldest cat and then she yowls at me at all evening, until i lay down on my side so she can lay on the divot between my chest and hip
I didnât understand [my mother's] insanity, but I appeared to contribute to it merely by existing. It was obvious that she was hurting and going out of her mind, she had capitulated to her fears and perhaps I should have felt compassion towards her and perhaps I did feel a kind of compassion towards her deep in the recesses of my mind, but I couldnât allow myself to feel that compassion or act on it because it required a surfeit of generosity I didnât have towards someone I had to protect myself against more than anyone else because she intruded on my boundaries constantly, probably without realising it. I didnât have the capacity to comfort someone who accused me of being the cause of their suffering, who claimed â and indeed believed â that it was my behaviour that caused her pain and for that reason she had become obsessed with my conduct, my actions, even the most trivial, and she never stopped looking for signs that there was something in me that might prompt me to do the very things she feared. I was unable to reassure her of my innocence, present and future, and so she hated me and nagged on and on at me, and it felt as if she wanted to get under my clothes and under my skin and into my head in order to read my mind to learn what triggered her unbearable fear, but as that was impossible, she invented her own version of me instead. Her fear created me because fear and imagination go together.
