Demi Lovato
Vocal Fach: Light Lyric SopranoĀ
Studio Range: C3-Bb5-Eb7
Live Range: C#3-Bb5-Eb6
Vocal Peak/Prime- so far: 2015
Demi Lovato, born in Albuquerque and raised in Dallas, TX, is no stranger to fame and the industry. Sheās been on your television screen as early as her Barney & Friends days where she played Angela, and has been climbing up the ladder of fame since. Demi got her big break on Disney Channel, when she was casted as the female lead in the hit movie production, Camp Rock. It was the first the world got to really hear Demiās voice and it was impressive, to say the least. Demi & Joe Jonas even managed to enter the Billboard Hot 100 at #9 with the smash hit āThis Is Meā. During this time, Demi was also on Disney Channelās miniseries As The Bell Rings as Charlotte. However, it didnāt end there. Demi was successfully in her own sitcom, Sonny With A Chance, where she played an aspiring actress from Wisconsin. During this, Disney didnāt let Demiās singing talent go to waste. She was signed to Hollywood Records and began recording songs for her debut album. Preceded by her first lead single āGet Backā and supported by following singles āLa La Landā and āDonāt Forgetā, her debut album, of the same name as the latter was released in 2008. It reached #2 on the Billboard 200 as Demiās fanbase began to grow. After the success of her first album, Demi released the #1 albumĀ Here We Go Again in the summer of 2009, supported by her title track, her first Top 40 hit as a solo artist. She embarked on the Summer Tour 2009Ā to promote the album, which was later renamed as it extended into South America in early 2010. AĀ sequel to Camp Rock was released September 2010 and Demi and the Jonas Brothers went on the Jonas Brothers- Live in Concert Tour, the second tour she had done with them. Demi withdrew from the tour in November 2010, and put her career on hiatus to deal with personal struggles, as a successful two year run of Sonny With A Chance came to an end. Demi returned to the music scene with the release of the powerful ballad āSkyscraperāĀ which addressed many of her personal struggles and debuted at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. āSkyscraper also won a VMA for best video with a message. Demi went on to release her third studio album, UnbrokenĀ in September 2011, which despite receiving mixed reviews still managed to reach #4. Demi released her final single off of that album,Ā āGive Your Heart A Breakā in early 2012, which was another Top 20 success. The Demi era, following after saw the successful Top 10 hitĀ āHeart Attackā and a shift to more bubblegum/electropop sound, which critics saw as a decrease in maturity. Demi did later admit it was a ploy to try and attract more listeners, and perhaps it did. Demi hit #3 on the Billboard 200 and debuted with 110,000 units, her best sales week ever. Following singlesĀ āMade In The USAā,Ā āNeon Lightsā &Ā āReally Donāt Careā saw moderate success and Demi went on both the Neon Lights Tour & the Demi World Tour to promote the album. Wrapping up in 2015, the first glimpse of D5 the general public has gotten, is her newest singleĀ āCool For The Summerā, which experimented with rock & electropop vibes. Sheās the girl who never stops surprising, Demi Lovato!
On to the actual vocal shitā¦.
Demi has a rich and powerful voice that has silenced critics with her impressive belting range and strong emotive qualities. Demiās voice is versatile and she is able to utilize growl, vibrato and melismas effectively and well.
Low Notes (C3-A3)
This part of Demiās voice isnāt the strongest nor most consistent. Sheās managed to strengthen it as her career has progressed, but she doesnāt express natural comfort in this part of her voice, which is understandable as sheās a soprano. Managing to make it down to a C#3, her lows maintain their resonance and tonality to around G3, but below that she seems to struggle. Despite that, this part of her voice isnāt exactly a paperweight to her voice, and itās developed enough to be substantial.Ā
Mid Belts (B4-E5)
Demi finds the most comfort and resonance in this part of her voice. Sheās consistent, even when in bad health and has great stamina above B4 (Heart Attack). Demi has excellent tonal quality here and her belts are full. The only concern for this part of her voice is how unevenly mixed they are. Her chesty approach to these notes comes off as harsh and weakens her voice if done too much. Demi has major issues with lowering her larynx here and using too much air to belt. Demi attempts to enlarge her natural output by doing these, and it only results in coarseness and her uncontrollable tremolo.Ā
Upper Belts (F5-Bb5)
Demiās voice has been on a rollercoaster in this area. Before 2011, she struggled to open her throat and find resonance. In her Unbroken era, she virtually had the most ease, comfort and agility in her upper belts, but she rose her larynx too often, resulting in shrillness, uncontrolled vibrato and damage. Now, Demiās belts are quite thin compared to the rest of her voice, and they can sound pushed or restricted, but up to G5, Demi has a more even mix, and some comfort at least, being able to now sustain much healthier and even vibratos. Demiās voice from F5-F#5 here is fantastic, as she sounds comfortable (at least in the studio). Anything above G5 sounds a bit higher than Demiās tessitura as the notes are more tense and inconsistent (the MLILAS A5s & the fact that her only live Bb5s are accidental). Demi can struggle with intonation above G5 as well. Ā Demi still does raise her larynx (actually more noticeably now) and she still pushes too much air, resulting in coarseness and cracking.Ā
Falsetto
While not something Demi opts to use a lot, the falsetto is light, warm and airy. It is not very developed at all, and Demi seems to struggle with it.Ā
Head Voice
Demiās head voice, which she has hit her peak note in, is pleasant and somewhat developed. She can hit notes here without strain, but struggles with consistency and does tend to crack. This part of her voice is also underutilized as she only gives herself one song to use it in as of now. Her head voice also comes off as very falsetto-y.Ā
Whistle Register
While this part of her voice hasnāt been used, sheās teased about her newest album including them.
Common Misconceptions
-Demi is a Mezzo-soprano
While this was commonly believed when she first debuted and in 2014, her lows have never been strong enough to be reminiscent of a mezzo, and her tessitura, lying around G3-G5 resembles more of a sopranoās. While Demiās upper range was strained, and a technical nightmare in 2014, leading people to believe sheād lost her range, her upper belts came back after practicing better technique and resting.
-Demi is a full lyric sopranoĀ
Full lyric vs. light lyric is a not something you can necessarily determine by the textbook definition. There are full lyrics who sound more developed and mature (Nicole Scherzinger, Celine Dion) and there are full lyrics who may still possess bright, girly voices but have too large of an output to be consideredĀ ālightā. SoHyang is an example of this (although sheās been credited as a lirico spinto). Demiās output is credited as being larger than many other light lyrics, but her voice is still girly and youthful, and her output is actually faked. Demiās natural voice is light and bright. Demi is almost always lowering her larynx and pushing too much air in her mid belting range, to attempt to mimic more powerful voices, but she is not a full lyric. Sheās a light lyric who just strains too much.Ā
Recap
Demi is a fair vocalist overall. While she has tension in her lows and upper belts, and her mix could be more even, sheās ventured in most parts of her voice, maintains her tonality throughout her tessitura, and is well aware of the fact that she is a soprano, and takes advantage of her good upper extension. Once Demiās fifth album is released, fans and critics alike are expecting more vocals, more exploration and more improvement in her technique since getting a vocal coach. She also has to work out things like consistency and vocal preservation.Ā
+
Wide range, good control over modal voice, explores her range, strong mid belts
-
Can be too chest dominant, relies too much on only her chest/mixed registers, can be inconsistent & push her voice, upper belts are thin and can lose tonality, manipulates air support and breath pressure to sound more powerful, larynx placement is unstable, range is disconnected
