I'm also a fanfic writer and usually I write a lot of dialogue but recently I started writing sweet pool fics and I can't really write dialogue much since Youji and Tetsuo communicate like 🧍♂️🧍♂️
I know the easy fix would be to write something with Makoto but also it's kinda funny how I put myself in this situation. Well, at least it's a way to get out of my comfort zone and try something new lol
I think it's pretty obvious to everyone that played it that sweet pool is female body horror (I hope that is the correct term I am a little stupid) but yaoi. But the more I think about it the more new things I realize about the game. Some of these are pretty obvious but I'll make a list of all the things I noticed anyway.
1. That scene of Youji in the bathroom stall
I hope you guys know which one I'm talking about, the scene early game when Youji freaks out and leaves the mess behind and then Zenya finds it. Maybe this isn't that common but it reminded me of my first period. I didn't even know what a period was, I just woke up one morning to my underwear full of blood and freaked out. This scene reminded me of that, the panic of not knowing what's going on, feeling disgusted. Unlike Youji I didn't freak out for too long but he didn't have that, he didn't have anyone to tell him what was going on.
2. Youji's doctor visits across the game
He knows something is wrong with his body, it's obvious. He goes to the doctor multiple times to figure out what's happening, but every time they only tell him that nothing is wrong, maybe it's just psychological and then they send him home. Even Youji starts believing that it's all in his mind, hell, I started believing it too at one point. Something is wrong with his body but the doctors aren't doing anything and unfortunately that's very common with female patients especially.
3. Everyone being interested in Youji
More specifically, in his body, especially for breeding purposes. I don't even want to go more into detail with this, the game did it enough and I feel sick just thinking about it.
4. Makoto's interest in Youji
I love Makoto and all but his sudden interest in Youji reminded me of having male friends when I was younger who suddenly got a crush on me. You're not just friends anymore, you're seen as something sexual. You just want to be friends but he wants more, and sometimes they don't take no for an answer. I was never in a situation as extreme as the chemistry lab one (THANK GOD) but it reminded me of this time in middle school when a male friend had a crush on me and just wouldn't let it go.
That's all I could really think of, there's definitely more stuff I missed especially since I only did one playthrough and I think a lot of other things will be obvious with hindsight. Also I think this might be my favorite n+c game because the horror hits so close to home. Just like I said earlier, some things made me remember moments from my own life, actually, I wrote this post in two parts because halfway through I couldn't do it anymore, remembering was making me too emotional. I'll definitely replay this one sometime to see what I missed the first time around.
I finished Slow Damage last night and now that I had time to somewhat calm down and stop crying I want to yap about it a bit. This will be a more general post but I'll definitely make another one about the Fujieda route because I loved it so much.
Spoilers for all of Slow Damage bellow!!
First, I loved the little hints across the game. The flashes on the screen whenever someone said "daijoubu" (though I feel like this one detail got a bit lost in translation, it took me until around the halfway point of my second route to realize it was "daijoubu" specifically and not people generally asking someone if they're ok.)
Another one I really liked has a bit of a story to it. I started playing with my partner and we played together until the halfway point of the first route (Taku.) And during the Asakura euphoric episode, as he was making the cuts on Towa's back, my partner pointed out that "they keep cutting places that already have scars, probably so they don't keep updating Towa's design with new scars." At the time it was a joke but at the end that moment came back to me and it blew my mind. It was so in our face yet we didn't even question it because who would even predict how this would go down that early on?
Finding out that the three people from Towa's euphoric episodes that we played through the game were connected to his past was also interesting to me, more specifically Ikuina and Asakura.
Ikuina was a child just like Towa, he was forced to hurt Towa and that ended up with him later in life having this obsession with seeing people's insides just like his father. He is also a victim, he experienced something a child should never have to and it led to this obsession later in his life for which he hurt others. When it was with Towa during the euphoric episode it was consensual, but both of them were groomed into it at an early age. Towa by Maya, he was taught to always please, his feelings didn't matter, and Ikuina by his father who forced him to hurt Towa, and maybe more incidents we don't know about. So even though it was two adults agreeing to doing this, those two adults used to be two traumatized children who most likely wouldn't have ended up in this situation if it weren't for their abusive parents.
Asakura on the other hand was an adult, but he was still forced into hurting Towa. A professor, someone with power over him forced him into it, and to this day he regrets it. Obviously him attempting to do surgery on a child later in life can't be excused just because of it, but that doesn't mean someone with authority over him didn't abuse their power to put him in that situation where he had to hurt Towa. He remembers that moment and it's been haunting him for years, that couldn't have been good for his mental health.
Another detail I really loved was color slowly being added to the painting on the easel on the title screen. I loved that with each route we got a few more colors added to it, and then getting the big reveal at the end along with the title screen change. The new title screen makes me cry, but not in a sad way. "Nightmare" changing to "Joy", the previously dark room now being bright, the TV being off... Maybe there's more differences I missed but that's all I can think of right now.
If you read all of this, thanks. And if anyone wants to mention more things I could have missed let me know. This game took me 50+ hours so I could have definitely missed things.
I've been thinking... What would go down if these two interacted? I'm talking Aoba using scrap and Towa using interrogation, full on yaoi talking combat. Who comes out on top? What are the possible outcomes?
I don't know about others but for me the liner notes are one of the highlights. I'm going through the dmmd ones right now and some of these are hilarious.
