Eun-Sang came out of Rachel’s room with Hye-Rim and Young-Do immediately reached for his niece. Eun-Sang smiled and placed the tiny, tiny girl in his arms. “Rachel isn’t doing well. We’re going to have to supplement with formula because Rachel needs her rest. She’s not healing right. I’m worried I could make it worse since I’m not…I’m not fully trained and my garden…”

“Fuck.” He’d cleaned out the dead plants and trees. He spent hours looking at trees before he bought a new pomegranate tree and designing a new garden. Just in these last few days, Eun-Sang had been incredibly ambivalent and made no attempt to bond with the new tree.

He hadn’t told her that her garden at her store was also dead. He just put Nam-Il in charge of removing it and replacing her inventory. She would notice later—when she cared.

all I ever wanted

The knock on the door was tentative but Eun-Sang startled anyway. “It’s just me,” Young-Do said and she let out a low breath. “Can I come in?”

“Yes.” She had to clear her throat. He had a tray with him and she almost laughed but it was too bitter. He made tea when he was anxious and then insisted on offering it to everyone around him. She asked him about it once and he just said living in a home with three, strong women needed good tea.

Young-Do set the tray on the bed and knelt down at the end opposite her to add milk, honey, and some lemon. She watched his hands and just…ached.

“I thought you gave up on us,” she whispered. “What you did today…that’s not giving up.”

“I’m sorry. He scared you again. I’ve been trying…” Young-Do didn’t look up from the tea and he briefly closed his eyes. “He doesn’t understand why we can’t be together.”

“That’s something we have in common.” She bowed her forehead to her knees and wished she had more courage. Today stripped her careful control over her emotions and she could feel it filling up the space between them. “I talked to Ji-Hyuk’s wolf plenty of times. He didn’t scare me.”

“He’s not an Alpha wolf,” Young-Do said after a minute. “He’s younger and not in the line of succession. His wolf isn’t like mine. I don’t like it, Eun-Sang. I don’t like smelling your fear and knowing I’m the source of it. But I also don’t enjoy smelling your happiness and knowing it’s because of another man. Today…”

Today.

“I wasn’t in any danger. It was daylight. I was with the pack. I was…” She almost started laughing hysterically. “I was near you. I wish you could smell how I feel safe near you. You could’ve continued to…do what you think is best for me but now I know that you know the truth. I’m your true mate.”

He made a quiet rumble that she knew meant he was pleased with her declaration. She caught the red glint to his eyes and suspected they weren’t alone.

“So what do we do now?” Eun-Sang curled her toes into the bedspread and tried to be brave. If she wanted to stay in this territory, if she wanted to stop being sad, if she wanted…him…she needed to do something. “I can’t go back to being ignored by you. Not after that display. But I know we can’t go back to what we were. Not after the way you abandoned me.”

“We could be friends.” He choked on it and she watched him swallow whatever his wolf wanted to say. His next words were through clenched teeth. “I was wrong to leave without explaining myself or talking to you. We can’t go back to being mates. Not after everything.”

“Is that what you want? Is that what he wants? To be friends?”

“No,” he whispered. “I want you to be safe. He wants to make love to you tonight. He…he didn’t want me to leave. He refused to move on.”

Fuck. Making love to him sounded good. She missed making love to him. Being with Ji-Hyuk was enjoyable but it didn’t compared to how complete she felt with Young-Do behind her.

“That isn’t a good idea. Being friends…” Eun-Sang drew in a deep breath and slowly let it out. “I just miss you. I miss walking home with you. I miss testing out recipes on you. I miss sleeping beside you. But I am anxious around him. I’m not afraid of him. He saved me from prowlers twice now. But he’s a stranger to me. If we are going to be friends, you can’t run away because what I want is at odds with how I feel. Age-mates don’t abandon each other.”

Young-Do was silent for an agonizing minute. The red glinted on his eyes again. “Alright. We can be age-mates.”

coming to terms

“If we cannot come to terms with Lee Hyo-Shin being Rachel’s husband, we will absolutely lose her,” Young-Do said to Eun-Sang as they waited, out in the cold, for Rachel to exit the police precinct. He saw Lee Hyo-Shin enter with Jeon Hyun-Joo, just before the arrival of a special prisoner. She was tied with red rope and it clashed against the pink prisoner uniform.

It was a lot of rope. There was a lot of fear.

She was gone before he could place what was familiar about her.

“He’s not her husband,” Eun-Sang grumbled petulantly. Young-Do didn’t argue with her. He felt the same. “He just happened to be nice to her while knocking her up. I don’t understand this game she is playing with him. He will disappoint her.”

A gun shot rang out. Young-Do knew immediately where it came from. It was a death dealer’s gun. “Stay here.”

Silent Scream, Eun-Sang & Young-Do, 19

open your eyes

“It’s your turn,” Young-Do says groggily as Eun-Sang staunchly ignores the babbling from baby monitor. It sounds like Hye-Rim is saying hello to Jung-Woo and telling him a story.

She curls into a tiny ball and pulls the blanket over her head right after signing a quick No because she knows he won’t press her to get up with their son. She’s right because he sighs, pulls the blanket back enough to kiss her behind the ear, and gets out of bed. She sneaks a peek at his backside and grins to herself as she remembers how uncomfortable her younger self was with his easy of nudity.

He pauses briefly to pull on a pair of sweatpants and she goes back to dozing. She is not surprised when Young-Do returns and places a squirming Jung-Woo on her pillow before climbing back into bed with her.

“I sent Hye-Rim to bother her parents. I’m pretty sure Hyo-Shin didn’t get in until after midnight so that will be fun.”

Eun-Sang pokes her fingers out. You’re mean.

“I am the one buying Rachel’s midnight cravings when he works late with his trainees. I get to be mean in the morning, don’t I, Jung-Woo?”

There was a cackling laughter before Jung-Woo crawls on top of her head to try and end Young-Do’s tickling and that ends all sleep. He was eight months and very active but her favorite part of him is the way he always snuggles into her shoulder when she holds him.

Eun-Sang eventually sits up and opens her eyes to a beautiful life. Sometimes, she’s afraid it’s all a dream or a hopeful moment in the Drift and when she opens her eyes she will be back in her tiny apartment hiding from her own personal monster.

Young-Do always kisses her when she opens her eyes and this morning, he pulls Jung-Woo into his lap. “Alright. We practiced hard with Halmeoni. Say Omma.”

Jung-Woo grins and his little hands makes the sign for mother and Eun-Sang gasps. Jung-Woo picked up all the important signs quickly–Hungry, Potty, Hot, Cold, Grandmother, Aunt, Uncle, even Daddy, but he struggled with Mommy. He seemed to understand the majority of what Eun-Sang said to him but when he wanted her, he just cried. She knew Young-Do was working with him and Mama said that sometimes babies just got frustrated because they were babies but…

Jung-Woo pats her cheeks when she starts crying and hugging him and trying to tell him how much she loves him. Then Jung-Woo makes two little signs–love and omma.

Omma loves Jung-Woo. She looked up at Young-Do and kissed him. Thank you.

“Rachel helped in between her morning sickness. I know how hard it was Hye-Rim picked everything up at six months but our Jung-Woo was a slow-poke.”

He’s the cutest slow-poke. Eun-Sang kisses him and basks in her life.

teaming up

Young-Do came into his bedroom and did not expect his wife to be sitting on their bed surrounded by…the proposal he put together but threw away two weeks ago.

“What are you doing?”

Eun-Sang didn’t look up. “Fixing it.”

“It can’t be fixed.” He came over and tried to find a space not covered in paper and binders. “It relies too heavily on your software and I promised you I wouldn’t ask for it.”

“I think I can modify it. We can put the software onto employee computers, let them use it, but all of the results and data are held by my company. Then, part of the service, is giving them a proposal on how to increase employee efficiency without putting unnecessary pressure on the mental health of the under performing individual.”

Young-Do looked over her should and raised his eyebrows. “You really discovered that someone needed to go to the doctor for a bladder infection based on this?”

Eun-Sang grinned up at him cheekily. “Also two yeast infections and diabetes. It’s a powerful tool. I just don’t trust capitalistic companies who care more about their bottom line than their employees. Abuse is just too easy with this.”

His father would love something like this–something to allow him to reasonably fire the slackers or those he thought didn’t fit in well to the company structure. Young-Do stared at her data and was just in awe before his own gears started turning.

“You need to make a subsidiary to focus on this.”

“We,” Eun-Sang quietly corrected. Her smile went soft and she cleared off a space for him. He sat down and she shyly took his hand. “You did so much preliminary work on this, I think we should do it together. We’re almost to our deadline but I don’t see myself backing out of our marriage.”

“That’s the last thing I want. I never want it.” It was uncomfortable to say. He didn’t want to analyze his feelings for her at all. These last few times they made love…were almost too much.

“So we make a company together. We put it under the Zeus umbrella but give Park Industries operational control. I don’t have anyone good to run it though. That’s the only problem.”

Young-Do thought about the text he got from Hyun-Joo yesterday and felt relieved he could help her out. “I do. She’s very good and this is a perfect project for her. I’ll make some calls and you can meet her.”

“I trust your judgement. You can make the offer.” Eun-Sang leaned against him and he allowed himself to put his arm against her back as he bent down and kissed the top of her head.

“Can you still march into my office all worked up about something?” He enjoyed her blush as he teased her.

“Only if I get to do you on your desk,” she teased back. It was another relief that she decided to play along. Maybe they could get through whatever awkwardness that kept popping up whenever they were intimate. It was nice that she didn’t want to pull away from him completely.

“Call.”

Rachel was much too calm. She tried to sit Eun-Sang down twice before giving up. Rachel made one phone call and Eun-Sang was too distraught to listen to her end of it. “He’s been poisoned, stabbed, shot, and even had his throat slit,” she murmured. “He will come home. His tie to both of us is alive, strong, and there is very little pain. She is not torturing him.”

“She can drug him. There are natural plants that have the ability—“

“Do you want me to get him?” Rachel laughed softly at the horror on her face. “I’m pregnant, not weak.” Eun-Sang started pacing again. Her feet were completely fixed but Go Nam-Il insisted on having the hotel doctor double check them. “It has only been thirty minutes. He will be home soon.”

“It’s hard. I didn’t know it would be this hard.”

H-How long have you been standing there?

Eun-Sang was mortified Young-Do might have seen what she was doing at two in the morning in front of the training gym’s giant mirror. He was struggling not to laugh. He covered his mouth and looked off the to side.

“When you didn’t come back, I was a little worried. I’m a light sleeper and Rachel said you hadn’t gone to find her.” He paused and looked back at her. “Are you singing?”

She felt her entire body go red. It was Bo-Na’s idea. She wants to do something at Hyo-Shin’s next sing-a-long. She’s going to sing. Rachel and I are going to back her up. Rachel’s not as excited about it, so I’m trying to figure it out and teach it to her tomorrow.

“Can I listen while you practice?” He came over to her and sat down with his back against the mirror. Her nerves were apparent as she shuffled her feet and winced. “It looks good so far. You’re really cute.”
