Not that I think they will ever happen on the show cause I ain't that lucky but let's say the writers do indeed make Sydrichie happen. How do you see it happening?
There's some ways they could do it but I think the biggest thing they gotta focus on with these two is pacing. I think their duoism has already been fleshed out pretty well but developing it further in season five would be great.
Since Carmy is no longer working at the bear, Sydney's taking control of the ship and I can see some hesitance with that on her end. She has many big and great ideas and I feel like we see her fighting to be on the same level as Carmy as co-owners of the establishment. Now that he's completely off, I can see her being a bit lost on what direction she wants to take the resteraunt since it's hers (for the most part). Throughout this season we see Sydney struggle with the decision to leave, her father's heart problems, and the a potentially that the Bear is going to shut down forever.
This season feels like Richie is coming into a acceptance stage of his character developmeent. I mean throughout the series, we've seen Richie grow alot and come to terms about some things here and there. Outside of his petty arguments with Carmy, Richie has matured and his relationship with Sydney shows that character development perfectly. Literally brought her as a date for Tiff's wedding which was the cutest thing to me. I think a key difference from him and Carmy's style of working is their passion. Like Camry says, he's no longer in love with cooking. We see more and more of his frustration and hot temperament throughout the seasons and his inability to get out of his head when shit hits the fan or even gets stressful.
The freezer and tickets scene both shows Richie's ability to work in a high stress level situations in my opinion. Richie expos, something he's never done but still does anyway to keep things going. Richie tries to stay positive multiple times about the restaurant and even apologizes for his poor money spending.
Sydney needs stability, someone who is going to be there especially when shit goes haywire and thats what makes Richie a good co-owner for her. Richie finds purpose in his role at the Bear and will do anything for it. While Carmy has fallen out of love with it, Richie has fallen in love with it.
Enough deep dive into the characters, now for the romanceee.
If the writers ever would, season five would be the perfect time to DEVELOPE it. The bear has some problems with pacing romantic relationships imo, mainly Claire and Carmy's so I think its best to give more screentime to Sydney and Richie. Like some more scenes of them working together and some others of them brainstorming ideas for the restaurant too. Maybe there's a scene where Richie admits he hasn't tried everything thats on the menu and Sydney offers to cook for/(maybe even) with him. They have a night opening up about their personal stuff.
I think they'll both be great for each other character development. Richie always talks highly of Sydney and I feel like he'd encourage her to be more confident and proud of her accomplishments. Sydney feels like the type to keep striving for perfect without realizing how well she's doing that that moment. And I think alot of a Richie's respect for her (and carmy) comes from the fact that she started his character development with the idea of change within the restaurant. I could see them having a heart to heart where he talks about how much of an impact she's had on him and how important not only the restaurant but she is to him.
Possibly some comedic moments where other ppl in the kitchen pick up on some vibes between the two. I could see Fak asking Richie what's going on between the two and Richie just giving him a deadpan stare before walking away.
I can see these two in a slow burn until like the end of season six (if we get one đđœ or unless they end on s5).
I understand that Claire is written like shit, which makes her being shoehorned into every situation all the more intolerable as the seasons go by. However, I donât think it was wrong of the writers to include her talking to Syd at the hospital, nor do I think it was forced? Like this is one of those situations where you have to admit to being a hater at the risk of seeming media illiterate. Itâs fine to be a hater. I love being a hater. Itâs even fine to be a hater and hold two beliefs that sound conflicting: i.e. that I think they try too hard to sell us on Claire after doing a shit job of convincing us she was important S2/S3, but I also think having her at the ER was an okay decision.
That whole scene functioned for Sydney the way I feel confessional functions for Catholics (shout out to all my ex-Catholics and ex-Christians). Admit your mortal sins to a third party who will forgive you because itâs their job and they have no personal stake in the situations being described.
Would it have been better if Sydney accepted comfort from the people closest to her? Sure. But it also would have meant admitting weakness to them, and that sheâs secretly a mess. And Sydney outright admits as much to Claire when it comes to said insecurities and how her dad worries about her more than (she thinks) he should. Sydney feels like a burden. And the middle ground to getting over that is to admit it to a neutral party. Normally thatâs a therapist, but everyone on this show is allergic to those for some reason, so instead we get Claire. The character who was already designated as⊠Carmenâs therapist. (Weird how weâre continuing the parallels even here, are we gonna let Syd lez out next because thatâs what I was hoping for).
Like, the one place itâs actually most acceptable for Claire to show up is the hospital. And itâs better that Carmen didnât come if thatâs the case because then the whole CarmClaire debacle wouldâve overshadowed Sydneyâs very real problems and fears. Moreover, we werenât giving Sydney trauma for no reason to just shoehorn Claire in here. The entire season centers around reckoning with family. Emmanuel is all Sydney has, and her avoidance of him in the earlier portion of the season serves to make this scene hurt even more, and serves as foreshadowing for later events in the season.
Syd tries to help her dad when he says he feels sick, he tells her not to worry about it (gee, I wonder where she gets it from). Then he has a heart attack. Carmen tries to help Syd and go with her to the hospital, but Syd tells him to stay. Then she has an anxiety attack in front of Claire. Carmen tries to offer Sydney a partnership, which she avoids for months, and then he leaves and she panics again.
Itâs about making Sydney contend with whatâs really important to her, but even more than that, FORCING HER TO COMMUNICATE OR FEEL EXTREME GUILT WHEN SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS AFTER SHE DOESNâT.
It raises some incredibly important questions. Like, why is it that Sydney can communicate the important things â her hopes and fears and insecurities â with the people outside of her lived situation (TJ and Claire) but not with the people who continuously beg her to let them in? What does that say about Sydneyâs own abandonment issues and the lingering pain of her motherâs death? And who else on the show, maybe a white man with blond hair and blue eyes, that is the exact same way â only his abandonment issues are tied to a dead brother?
