It was too short in reality (described in details in Das Mädchen Manuela (known as The Child Manuela) chapter 4 in the part before boarding school in the book related to the film Mädchen in Uniform, 1931.) There in reality was something, and it deserves to turn into loving relationship with age gap (Sylvia & a friend's Mum Sybille*) & no break up ever (despite horrible situation, but it can be fixed, as fiction, at least.)

*In the book version, Sylvia is Manuela von Meinhardis (who called herself Lela long ago & this is how she was known by relatives & friends); Sybille is Frau Inge Lennartz.

In Sylvia und Sybille, Fritz couldn't save his best friend Sylvia from grief because of recent loss of her dearest person, Mum. However, Fritz's Mum could (Fritz and she lost father & husband in one not long ago) & Sylvia helped her immensely as well.

At least here, it's not about to love own distress. It's about that only right person can save a girl | lass (who doesn't have to necessarily be a feminine damsel.)
