Krennic sighed wearily as he unlocked the door to his Coruscant apartment. He hadn’t been back in several standard months. Thoughts of Stardust still swirled in his preoccupied mind as he made his way directly to the bedroom. He was about to turn on the light when he noticed with a start there was a figure on the bed. Then he realized it was just you. Well, you weren’t “just” anything. You were his everything. Krennic honestly should have guessed you would be staying at his apartment. You often slept there when he was away, saying you missed him marginally less that way; he was grateful you felt comfortable enough in your relationship to do so.
He smiled reflexively. You looked so beautiful and serene in your sleep. Your head was nestled into the crook of your arm on the pillow, lips slightly parted as you breathed deeply and evenly.
Shit, he was so in love with you he realized with a jolt. It was an emotion that he had successfully been keeping at bay at the edges of his consciousness for a while, but now he realized it was an incontrovertible truth.
Well fuck. Now what? He supposed he should tell you. That’s what people did, didn’t they? Admitted to being vulnerable and exposing their weaknesses by having emotions and whatever other bullshit? But this wasn’t bullshit. Krennic was infinitely better than those lesser beings. And you were better too. No, his love for you wasn’t weakness. It was…ethereal.
Fuck, but what would he do if you didn’t say it back, he wondered in a sudden panic. You did love him, of course you did. You had to. And he supposed he could always throw himself out of an airlock if you didn’t…
As quietly as possible so as not to disturb you, Krennic shed his uniform and made his way to the shower. He let the water stream down his body much longer than was necessary, still trying to make up his mind. At last he decided he would tell you now, while you were still half asleep. That way he could pretend he hadn’t said anything if need be. Or maybe you would forget by morning. He knew it was an avoidant strategy, but he would, at least, force himself to say the words. Out loud. In your presence.
Fuck.
Leaving his towel in the bathroom, Krennic slipped into the sheets next to you. Cupping your face in his hand, he gave you a gentle kiss. Your eyelids fluttered open. “Orson!” You were only half awake, but your voice was full of joy. You wrapped your arms around his neck and kissed him back. “Missed you,” you said, nuzzling your head against his shoulder. There was a pause.
“I love you,” Krennic said. He braced himself.
“Love you too, Orson,” you murmured.
Krennic couldn’t believe it. Relief flooded him. He couldn’t ever remember feeling so happy in his entire life. He pressed his lips to your forehead and closed his eyes, ready to drift into the most peaceful sleep.
“WHAT!?” you exclaimed suddenly sitting bolt upright, staring at Krennic with your mouth open.
“What what?” he asked looking nothing short of terrified.
“You just told me—“
“No!” he contradicted immediately.
“Yes you did!” you insisted.
Poor Krennic. He looked as if he would be anywhere else in the galaxy but here. “Well…what if I did?” he asked somewhat defiantly.
“Orson Callan Krennic…” You couldn’t help grinning as you kissed his nose. “I love you too.”
