Who was I meant to be?

I had asked myself that question far too many times, and I only ever came up with one single answer; I was created to help others, to be helpful even when others had no idea I existed.

Gardenview had been long shut down since the funding was cut, now it was just us.. for some reason, we still kept our schedules, our roles as protectors, caregivers, teachers, and all of the things people had assigned to us before the show eventually went off the air.

Never had I ever thought that I would be locked away inside my own mind. It’s been so hard to leave bed recently, constantly tossing and turning in my sleep, nightmares plaguing me throughout my slumber, and yet I still came to that same conclusion..

Nothing would change.

“Shelly?”

Astro.. he was so nice to me, the only real toon who remembered my name. Why couldn’t he see I was begging for help? Reaching out to him in my dreams, hoping he was there.. but he wasn’t.

I had come to spite him, hate him even. He was so perfect.. quiet, but everyone remembered who he was. He healed people internally, blessing them with good dreams and the cure for insomnia.

“You haven’t come out of your room for a while, is everything okay..? The others and I have been worried about you.”

Astro knew he was lying straight through his teeth, I could tell by the way his lips twitched, his fingers gripping his blanket tighter than before. A bad liar, he was.

Some people treated him as an angel, but I see right through him. Through them. Through him and his demons. He sure did have skeletons in his closet but it was only obvious to someone who looked at the smaller details instead of the big picture.

I tried not to roll my eyes at him, he was always so annoying when it came to ‘caring’ about people. I wish they’d just let me rot, let me live up to my name and fossilize right here in this bed.

“…I-I’ll be out later, okay?”

Was that really my voice? I haven’t heard myself speak for days, and now it’s like im listening to a couple of strangers speaking in my room. That quiet little mumble, the stupid little stutter I picked up years ago.. I wanted to just crawl into a hole and die.

“Alright.. if you need anything im always here, okay?”

“We care about you, Shelly.”

“…mhm”

Does he really think I believe that? He should know by now that im not stupid, that im not gullible..

I say that as if I haven’t let everyone into my heart the second they give me attention- I guess im a hypocrite.

Turning over in my bed, I would pass out.
