"Right," he says. "I guess memorizing it after I deleted it wasn't so useless after all." Charlie moves for a kiss, but hesitates, instead opting for a light peck on the cheek instead, pulling away with a small, but sincere smile. "See you 'round, Lee."

nikki !

Despite the love of his life Nikki being beside him, humming along to whatever tune there was on the radio, as the rain grew heavier so did the weight and fear growing in Charlie's heart. It was growing late now, and the clouds only seemed to grow darker with each passing second. It was pretty much raining at this point— Charlie knew he wouldn't be able to make it in time; at least, if they were going at this rate and unless he'd make a run for it to swim in murky floodwater.

He was breathing heavily, now, head swimming (pun unintended) and tears welling up a bit as the thought of what was to come next once he arrived filled his head. Vanessa waiting for him at the door with that glint in her eye that meant certain death. The low voice that never failed to freeze his blood. That damn phrase she always said before guiding him to the dinner table.

"We need to talk."

"No," he choked breathlessly, not realizing he'd been holding his breath the entire time. "No, no, no, no, no—"

Charlie offered a small smile, but shook his head. "No, I-I can't. Vanessa, she— she just said she needed help with the groceries. Nothing much."

Charlie closes his eyes, savoring the other boy's embrace. Hesitantly, he lets his lips brush over Leon's ever so slightly, inviting him for another kiss— only for him to practically jump out of his skin at the sound of his ringtone. Charlie's face drops at the name of the contact displayed on his phone. "Aunt Vanessa".

"I broke things off because I thought you'd be happier, Lee, not me. Sure, I cried, and sure, I thought I was the biggest fucking burden to you, but whenever you were with me I could almost convince myself you felt the same, like this whole thing wasn't an obligation because you were scared I'd tip over the edge if you left me with Vanessa, that we were just some young dumb couple in love and that I loved you—" he pauses, wiping his runny nose and tears—

"—and that maybe, if we weren't so fucked up maybe we could've been just that." There's an almost wistful smile on his face, a hint of bitter regret and longing for what never was underneath. “Just two stupid little boys in love with each other. I guess we only ever achieved the stupid part, huh?”

"Don't touch me," he hisses weakly, but melts into his embrace regardless— he feels like a goddamn child being patted on the back and cooed at for comfort, but the warmth emanating from Leo's embrace fills him with a sense of calm and serenity he hadn't felt in so long, despite his tears and runny nose.

For a few moments, there’s nothing but silence between the both of them, save for Charlie’s soft sobbing and a barely audible "God, why do I still love you?"

"You were happy with me? After a whole month of shoving me aside, telling me to fuck off because you didn't want anything to do with me? Happy after I basically begged you on my fucking knees because I thought you— that we—" Charlie stops, on the verge of tears, voice dangerously close to yelling. He looks down, inhales sharply, then stares at Leon dead in the eye, but there's no hiding the quivering fear in his voice.

"Do you know how many fucking nights I spent bawling my eyes out thinking everything was a lie? That you were only there for me because you just pitied me? Because of her? What she's doing to me?" Charlie yanks at his sleeve to reveal a fading bruise.

"I was so scared you'd leave me," he says, voice now a broken whisper. "Because I loved you. And not just because of what we did that night. Lee, I..."

— love you —

"...I'm sorry."

Charlie's features morph into that of confusion and similar pain, mumbling a soft "You say it like you actually cared,” chuckling briefly; sadly. "I... thought you were okay with it. That you'd be happier."

nikki !

"Well, aside from having seen your lovely face you can't really forget when a grown woman comes running at you screaming with a pan," He chuckles. "Mike choked on his coffee laughing when I told him I accidentally smacked myself with the pan cooking eggs for myself at 4AM. Gullible."

Charlie's half-hearted attempts at trying to string a single coherent sentence come to a stop, half at Leon's kiss and half at his words. His face falters and his eyes cast themselves to the side. "...Oh."

“N-no, I— I—” Charlie babbles, wide-eyed and fearful as Leo’s practically seething above him. “I-I just saw you and I thought you were going to— God, I wish you’d just kiss me instead of beating the shit out of me,” Charlie blurts, before panicking even more and attempting to squirm out of Leo’s arms in vain. “O-oh God, I-I’m so sorry, I—”

Charlie went wide-eyed, the smallest squeak escaping his lips as he bolted through the door and outside. A string of babbled curses flew from his lips as the rest of his body was on autopilot, only able to register the growing fear and the sound of heavy footsteps gaining on him.
