Headcanon: Sam likes his salads and healthy food because he never got much of it during his childhood and teenage years (too expensive and/or unavailable because lbr, they mostly got their food from gas stations or diners, and didn't regularly grocery shop in the supermarket). It might even be a small act of rebellion against his father, who I'm sure also never really cared about healthy food

number one.. it reminds him of a time that was rarely ever good for him or dean. no matter how many times dean tries to pass it off that it wasn't so bad for his own way of coping with it. sam remembers some of those nights barely able to scarf down soggy fries and stale sandwiches because of the gnawing emptiness in his gut listening to john and dean argue in the front seat. or the stomach aches from a bad case of food poisoning thanks to barely regulated meals cooked by some shady dude smoking a cigarette in the kitchen. which happened more than once in different places, thanks 80s and 90s!
number two? his body's been through hell and back (literally) and he really does try to do his best to take care of it because hunting and being physical while running on grease might be dean's thing..but it's, definitely, not his and he prefers to have the proper kind of nutrients to actually do their job and not have to binge eat after to make up for burning through empty calories and the low running reserves of energy from the good ones.
