She really should have known something was amiss – there was far less communication, and what did reach her was thoroughly lacking description regarding how the search for the princes was going. When the messages finally reach her (within a few hours of each other, first from Corvus, and then from Opeli), she finds her hand shaking momentarily from a mixture of relief and fury.

She makes it back to the capital in record time. I knew I shouldn’t have listened to that traitorous bastard Viren! The Breach is well-defended even in her absence, though she knows she will return again, as long as tensions continue to run so high – but right now, she needs to be in the middle, to make sure that snake doesn’t try anything underhanded again.

And to make sure Gren is all right.

It’s a little less than two days’ ride to the Border – though admittedly, Amaya does have one of the best horses in the whole of Katolis’ army. If she wants to take it easy, the journey is two and a half days, comfortably – but she rarely has such a luxury. On her way to the capital, she was hurrying to see to her nephews’ safety, and now, on her way back, she is only marginally slower, knowing her post and the people under her command await her return. Her heart is not any lighter, knowing her brother-in-law is dead and his sons missing – but she does rest easily knowing Gren will find them.

Of course, none of this can get in the way of the mundane; namely, having to slow her progress even further when her stallion decides to lose a shoe in the middle of the forest, after which the small party continues on foot until the nearest settlement. By the time they reach it, it’s pitch dark, and even the sturdy and relentless general has to admit there is no reason to push on in these conditions.

Surprisingly, the blacksmith still seems to be open at this hour, though the first person Amaya spots is an unlikely thin young man standing at the bellows. She motions for one of her companions that can sign (though a little haltingly compared to Gren), and the two of them make their way to the door, where Amaya raps her knuckles against the frame to get the boy’s attention, and then motions, « Could you shoe my horse, please? Or should we come back in the morning? »

By the time they find the mirror, Amaya thinks nothing could truly surprise her. Gren has already told her about how the captive elf was magicked into a coin of all things – surely it cannot get any worse than that? And this – doesn’t seem to fit into a category of worse, anyway. She would sooner call it… perplexing. The design is decidedly not of Katolis – could it be Xadian? She does not recognize the symbols the edges are littered with – and yet the last thing she expects is for a shadow to move across the glass when she hasn’t so much as moved a muscle in her concentration to decipher what she is seeing in the semi-darkness of the dungeon.

She gives a momentary start, but by the time she can make out the stranger’s face looking at her, she is composed again. « Who are you? »

So, you think you have what it takes to be a crownsguard?

Amaya has never been one to show favouritism. And, sure, perhaps she doesn’t supervise every final exam. But the fact that she has a deep-seated mistrust for magic users has no bearing on the fact that she chose to watch the last challenge of the son of Katolis’s High Mage. Soren is not his father, and Amaya has never been an unfair judge of character.

She is simply curious about what the boy can do, considering his young age and apparent over-eagerness. « You may begin, » she signals from the sidelines to both Soren and the exam’s proctor, then folds her arms, ready to watch.

So, apparently, Callum had been lying. That in and of itself was… less of a surprise than it could have been; though Amaya did wish he’d just trusted her, she could understand his reticence, given the importance of their mission. Regardless, this does not change one important thing: « I still don’t trust you. »

(somewhat tentative) daily hc! amaya’s shield is made of a super sturdy material, but it isn’t actually magical! sunforge blades are not made to cut through everything; they are simply spelled to retain the same heat they had when they were forged. any shield that was made of an alloy that has a higher smelting heat than a blade could withstand a sunforge blade without melting; this is why janai could cut through her sword, but not her shield!
