Scott did not have many friends growing up, but he did have one in particular: Leonard McCoy.

They met when they were kids, when David McCoy brought Leonard to Aberdeen. It was only three times, but it was enough just to say that Monty had more than one friend who wasn’t his brother, Robbie.

However, when Leonard’s aviophobia kicked in, he never really saw him again–and it was rare for that, as they were attending the same Starfleet academy together. They saw each other once or twice, but that was it.

So, Monty remained friendless. It was easier, because he knew no-one wanted to befriend the Scotsman with an Intelligence Quota of over 128. Devoted himself to his studies and even Scotch. Anything to distract himself that he spent the majority of his life alone. And it carried on that way, including Delta Vega.

Yes Keenser was there, but he wouldn’t hear from him for days, sometimes weeks. When Jim Kirk and Prime Spock showed up, it was one of the few times within that particular month that Keenser spoke to him. Yes, they were partners–didn’t mean he wasn’t not lonely. He did like the occasional conversation, the knowledge that he wasn’t boring someone to the point of death. And even though Keenser couldn’t utter more than a few words, it was fine. Of course, it would be fine. Wouldn’t bother him.

But it did. It bothered him so much.

After the fight scene on the bridge, Montgomery recognized that doctor–noticing that it was the kid from Georgia and now he was on board a ship with him and it was McCoy who helped Scott get a towel to dry off. Because Scott wanted it to be him, so they could catch up on the minor things and so that he could understand what just happened.

And, maybe yeah–working in a crew that could substitute as your family is nice, but he can go without days without seeing the bridge, without speaking a word to Sulu, Chekov, Uhura or Carol Marcus. The only real friends he talks to on a regular basis are McCoy and Kirk. Although, the latter is mainly required–because he does work as the Engineer and Kirk needs to know what is going on with his ship.

But his friendship with McCoy is different. There’s a mutual understanding of each other, that they’re on-board, sometimes so lonely and self-destructive. They drink often with each other, commenting on Kirk’s brilliant ideas with frequent sarcasm. That Monty sometimes needs the reassurance that there is someone in the universe who wants to talk to him–not for his transwarp beaming equation and not for the ship; but for company.

So that would explain why Montgomery Scott would call Leonard McCoy his best friend and not Keenser. Because he found someone who wants to spend time with him, who is not complied to.

More or less, kind of no in between. He’s definitely not Spock in the sense but he’s also not a go-get-her like Kirk. In fact, the way that AOS has portrayed him, I’d say he’s more introverted rather than extroverted. I am in no way a psychiatrist, so I can’t exactly diagnose him as introverted but here’s my take on it.

Let’s take a good look at who his closest friend is: Keenser, someone who rarely talks.

Scotty spent a majority of his childhood hanging out with his best friend, Robert, who happened to be his brother, to which they once snuck out to go look at the shipyard. He also spent a lot of time inside, mainly fixing small things his grandfather would ask him to fix (keyword: bagpipes). I seriously doubt he would boast his intelligence, because the man is intelligent. You don’t go to University at age fourteen to study quantum physics if you aren’t smart. I’d like to make myself believe he’s spend time in his room, taking technology apart and then putting it back together to make it run smoother. In school, he most likely just sat at the back of the class and just stayed silent but would answer all the tests correctly. He didn’t like to boast his intelligence for the idea of getting made fun of, or even worse, not believed in.

There’s also the point where after his University, he would go onto freighters and work as an Engineer. This was after he shot off his mouth with someone who had the right to grant him admittance to Starfleet Academy. He got shot down because he really thought he had the right to make a smart-ass out of himself. So. In the 2250, Starship NCC 0509's dilithium scrubbers failed and the ship sent a distress signal that was received by a civilian freighter. Its engineer, who was Scotty, was able to repair the temporarily repair the damage. The captain was impressed by his engineering skills and told him how not even her chief engineer had been able to solve the problem. She wanted to see Scott in Starfleet and promised to put in a word for him to her old friend Commander Alexander Marcus at the Starfleet Academy. ("IDW Star Trek, Issue 19")

He also doesn’t like to argue with authority figures, he kind’ve just goes along with it. And the only times where he really argued for things was with Admiral Archer for his transwarp equation, and with Kirk about the torpedoes in which both times: he got sent to a desolate planet and forced to resign his duties as Chief Engineer. I would think that he just keeps to himself, and that he doesn't cause a ruckus unless it is completely needed.

Let's bounce back to the friend thing: Keenser is probably his most trusted friend as of 2259, if anything. I also like to think that out of all the people on-board the ship, the only one he can really find himself relaxing around is Bones. They do drink, and this is true. He respects Kirk and Spock and almost every other person, but it doesn't make them all best buds.

So to answer your question, which I could've completely missed the point to because I didn't take my ADD meds today, I don't think he's socially awkward. If anything, I think he's more introverted and keeps to himself rather than going out. That's just my take on it. I really hope this answered your question though, and that I didn't miss the point.

Scotty, for the record is a genius--not like Spock, he's a little bit more hands on--but please for the love of god, do not discredit him. He's chief engineer for a reason and without him, Starfleet wouldn't have the transwarp beaming equation. So, do not discredit him because if you, he will not want to talk to you.

He isn't a member of Starfleet for no reason.

As for the drinking thing, it's for stress relief but he doesn't do it during his shifts. He's not a dumb-ass and he doesn't want to get fired as it is the only source of happiness for him.

One time, on shore leave, Hikaru Sulu (imperatorsulu) was hanging around with Scotty and he brought up that he, Montgomery Scott, couldn't drink a full bottle of BBQ sauce. Sulu also bet that he couldn't do it in under four minutes and if he did, he owed the Scotsman $100.00. Well, with Scotty being an expert on drinking, he drank the entire thing in under forty seconds.
