Warning: Toxic Relationship
It’s a week after you accept the role that you’re informed by your agent of the upcoming script reading.
You enjoy how quick to the point they are when they tell you to be at the front of your house tomorrow at 8, so that they can drive you there.
As much as you didn’t want to inform Elliot of your new role, you knew that you had to. If he found out that you kept this from him, he’ll be furious and he could use this as leverage for the divorce. He could claim to the courts that you kept this from him because you planned to cheat on him.
You don’t want to drag anyone else into this. You’re unsure what secrets Elliot might reveal if he’s angry, so you two should try to get along to keep your secrets safe.
You and Elliot are eating lunch when you put down your fork and speak up.
“Tomorrow. I’m heading out for a script reading.”
Elliot halts his eating and places down his fork, he wipes his mouth with the napkin before responding.
“Tomorrow? That’s kind of soon, isn’t it? How long ago did you accept this role?”
“Last week. It’s with Director Tom Jetson.”
“Jetson? That old man? That explains it. He’s not the best at managing times.”
You go back to eating as you eye his reaction.
So far, so good. He doesn’t seem that annoyed that you waited till the last minute to tell him, in fact, he seems more annoyed at who the director is. Mr. Jetson wasn’t really a bad director, you don’t think so, he’s a friendly man that lacks a bit of social cues such as checking the schedules of his cast but he’s nice to work with. You’re pretty sure it’s just Elliot having a vendetta against him because of his horrible scheduling.
Elliot drinks a bit of his water as he looks at the time.
“I’ll make dinner and wash the dishes tonight. So you can have more time to get ready for the reading.”
You nodded in acknowledgment.
The next day, you wake up feeling refreshed and ready. Maybe it’s because it’s been awhile since you’ve taken on a role, for the last few years, you’ve preferred taking a few select roles or merely staying at home while Elliot worked. Or it could just be that you’re excited at not having to spend much time around Elliot because you’re always at home.
It could be both. But you have a feeling that this new role will differ from the others, though you can’t explain why.
You smell the aroma of breakfast in the kitchen and quickly get dressed. Exiting your bedroom and heading into the kitchen, you see Elliot plating the food.
You watch from the doorway before softly greeting him.
Elliot turns around and nod at your greeting.
“Take a seat. Breakfast is done.”
You don’t waste another moment before sitting down and not long after, Elliot serves the both of you guys as you two eat.
Breakfast is now mainly quiet. There used to be light chatter amongst you two, but now it mainly consists of the sounds of forks scraping against the plate and sips of your drinks.
“Call me if that old man gets too rude,”
“I’ve heard rumors of him being too harsh with the female cast.”
You eye Elliot puzzled. Director Jetson? You’ve heard rumors of a director being harsh with his cast, but you never found out who it was. Granted, you’ve only worked with Director Jetson once and it was for a minor role, so it could explain why you’re not too familiar with him.
“I think I can handle criticism,”
You take some sips out of your drink.
“I’ve been through many directors.”
Elliot furrows his eyebrows at your lack of care at his words.
“That’s because you work with many of the same directors. I’ve been around that old man plenty of times to know that he’s harsh, especially with the women.”
“That doesn’t mean I can’t handle criticism.”
Elliot takes a few deep breaths before speaking in a bit more annoyed tone.
“You could just appreciate my help instead of trying to act all tough.”
You eye the clock, stand up, and gather your plate and cup to put it at the sink. You hesitate before speaking up.
“I…I will call you if he’s too rude.”
You hurry out of the kitchen to finish getting your stuff. If you had stayed long enough, you would’ve seen the smallest of smiles on Elliot’s face.
You’re quick to get ready and head out the door. Before you leave, you give Elliot a quick goodbye and watch as he sees you off.
You wait at the front of your house before you spot your agent’s car pulling up to the house. You hurry down the steps and get into their car.
You smile as you hop inside the backseat of the car and buckle in.
“Are you ready to sit through hours of boring chatter?”
You grin teasingly as Sam starts the car and begins driving off.
They eye you from the rear-view mirror.
“It shouldn’t be long. The show is only supposed to take like six months of filming.”
You hummed in acknowledgment as you looked out the mirror. Short and sweet, that’s why you took this role. Not too long enough for a potential scandal to arise between you and Willis. But not too short enough that you’re not getting any profit from it.
You lost track of time because before you know it, you’ve arrived at the studio. Lucky Man Studio. A decent size studio where either big names can work or those who are barely taking the steps into stardom.
You and your agent quickly get out of the car and head into the studio. You spot the circular table with name placards on top, Sam heads off towards the back to take more of an observer viewpoint while you head towards your spot.
People start coming in after a while, with many of them being the supporting cast. You greet each of them with them doing the same. Many of them take their seats and you’re quick to notice that the seat next to you is empty, you make a reach for the placard to see who’ll be sitting next to you and—
You fumble and put the placard back on the table. You turn around and smile apologetically.
“I’m sorry. I was just curious.”
You look up and see who it is. It’s Willis and maybe it’s because you’ve never worked with him that you’re expecting him to be somewhat annoyed at you for grabbing his placard, but he grins as he takes his seat.
“You didn’t do anything wrong. I was more worried that you were going to take my seat.”
“Why would I take your seat?”
“So you can rewrite the show so that you’re the main character instead of sharing the screen with me.”
You eye him, confused. He’s… something. You’ve never heard of that reasoning before. You remember working on a movie with Elliot back when you two were still barely reaching stardom and him having to apologize to another actor because you touched their placard.
You remember being so anxious in the car as Elliot drove home, thinking that he was going to berate you for making him look like a fool, but he called the actor an asshole and how he couldn’t wait to be bigger than him. That was one of the first times you two spent the car ride laughing together.
What happened to that? What happened to him?
Willis notices your silence and digs through his bag.
“You want some snacks? I got granola bars, cereal bars, and protein bars.”
You watch him dig through his bag.
Willis chuckles as he pulls out a fruit snack.
“Got these as well. Bought them when they were on sale.”
He holds out the snack to you as you take it and eye it. You open the package and eat slowly.
Before Willis can speak again, a booming voice interrupts him.
“Good morning, my stars!”
Everyone looks towards the sound of the voice as they see who it is. Director Jetson. He walks towards the center of the table and takes his seat, he makes a quick wave towards his assistant as they begin passing out the scripts. Once his assistant handed out the scripts, he spoke again.
“So I was looking at my cast,”
He gestures towards all the people before stopping at you and Willis.
“And I didn’t realize I got two big stars here as my main cast.”
One thing that was to be known about Director Jetson was that he always took over control of the room, speaking until he couldn’t think of anything else to say and he showed it as he continued on.
“So I was talking with our writers and we were thinking…,”
He keeps his attention focused on you and Willis.
“What if we extended the show? I asked the executives, and they seemed onboard with it. Instead of the six months of filming, we’ll do a year, we could definitely lengthen this story out.”
Some cast member’s voice out their agreements and before you know it, it’s back to you and Willis.
Willis leans back in his chair as thinks for a bit.
“Well, why not? It’s my first romance show and I want to learn everything I can from the pros.”
He gives you a grin as he waits for your response.
A year? That means by the time this show is over, it’ll be time for you and Elliot’s contract to expire. This could lead to a wide range of rumors, especially with how friendly Willis seemed to be. You want to say no that you only want to do six months, but after that? You may not get another role for a while and you’ll need all the money you can get in order to find good lawyers.
Besides, even if Willis was friendly, that didn’t mean he would fall in love with you, everyone in the entertainment business knew that you and Elliot were married. No actor would try anything, especially when they knew how big of a star Elliot was. It would work out. It had to.
You give a small smile as you nod. You hold out your hand to Willis as you agree.
“Yeah. I’m okay with it. I look forward to working with you as my costar.”
Willis grin gets a bit wider as he shakes your hand.
Director Jetson smiles big as he claps.
“Great! Great! Because of that, we’re going to need to see if there’s anything that you guys want to explore into more. So I hope you guys don’t have any plans because we’ll be here for a while.”
You don’t have any plans, so you don’t really pay much attention to the other cast members heading off to call their families to let them know. You see as Willis sends some quick text messages. But you don’t think of letting Elliot know.
It’s 8 o’clock now and you guys continue working through the script and making suggestions for Director Jetson to tell the writers about.
You’ve been so focused on your work and getting to know Willis that you neglect your phone that begins buzzing with text messages from Elliot.
How long is your script reading?
Is that old man giving you a hard time?
I called your agent, and they said you’re still working. How much longer till you’ll head home?
Tell me when you’re heading home, at least.
You don’t look at your phone during the whole meeting. You don’t look at it until you guys call it day and you and Sam head off to the car. You don’t look at it as you take a small nap while Sam drives. You only look at it when Sam shakes you awake and tells you that you’re home now.
You realized what you did, and you weren’t sure what Elliot’s reaction was going to be.
It’s nearly 10 o’clock at night by the time you arrive home.
You open the door to your house and set your keys down on the counter. You take quiet steps into the living room, you’re pretty certain that Elliot is sleeping, he was never quite the night owl. You don’t want to disturb him because he’ll wake up and start asking questions about your job or why you couldn’t inform him of when you’ll be heading home.
You don’t want to deal with that. Not when you’re tired. You arrive in the living room and place your bags down on the couch gently. You’re about to start walking towards your room before you hear the light switch turn on and see Elliot standing there in the hallway. You can’t tell what he’s feeling internally, but just by looking at him right now.
He eyes you up and down, it feels like he’s judging you or looking for something that seems out of the ordinary. But when he can’t find anything, and his eyes narrow at you before he speaks up.
“You didn’t think to tell me when you were heading home?”
“You forgot to send me a message? How can you forget to do this,”
Elliot scoffs as he walks towards you.
“For six years, we’ve been doing this, why would today change anything?”
Before you know it, he’s standing in front of you and narrowing his eyes at you.
“I don’t know what’s been going on with you lately. But you better fix it. I’m in no mood to deal with your shit.”
Elliot doesn’t wait for you to respond as he takes a few steps back before heading off to his room and slamming the door.
You stood there in the living room, surprised at Elliot’s reaction. Why was he so angry at you not keeping him up to date? Was it because of that director? Sure, he was a bit too friendly, but he had never done anything to make you feel uncomfortable.
Or was it because of everything that’s been going on? With you ignoring him and now this? Maybe he finally had enough. Before, it would’ve never gotten to this point. You would’ve kept him up to date on where you were and what time you’ll be heading home. You two would have still been decent towards each other. Past you would’ve gone and apologized to him, tell him what’s on your mind and see if you two could fix the issue.
But you don’t want to. Not anymore. Not with this new plan of divorcing him the moment you get the opportunity to.
In fact, you think Elliot being fed up with you will make the divorce much easier. He might even file first and all you’ll have to do is sign the papers.
The less work for you, the better.
You head to your room and get ready for bed. Unlike the past, where it would’ve felt uncomfortable to sleep because of the argument, present you sleep like a baby this time.
I’m still surprised to see how many people love this story. I think I’m getting ahead of myself, but I already envisioned the scene of when Elliot and Willis meet.
And also maybe Yandere squid games?? Maybe where you’re pregnant and your Yandere (or like half Yandere/ half overprotective) is your baby daddy. Basically jun hee and myung-gi?? 🧐
