Just Mobile news from the Social Ecosystem Summit

Happening today, Tuesday June 30, 2009 from 10am - 4:30pm at Mtn View with remote broadcasts across the company. Apparently Agrinova is the only contribution system Intuit currently has that is mobile-based.  See the earlier post on Agrinova for more info. The 3rd type of Contibution System "Data connections and behavior (e.g. profile info, biz trnasactions, social graph, sensor data, click stream, product usage)" will rely on mobile devices for location broadcasting and other real world data.

Gerald Huff cited the RIM-owned nav device called Dash that actually contributed your traffic info anonymosly (speed especially) to the Dash cloud, helping other drivers in the network.

To Hunch and Caterina Fake: take it mobile

It strikes me that Caterina's (Flickr co-founder's) new company, Hunch, has a perfect opportunity for going mobile:

Simple questions are presented in text and small thumbnail format (will fit on a small screen)

You answer with one of 2 or 4 choices (easy to map to keys on your phone, or touchscreen buttons)

Great for passing the time when you are waiting for something (elevator, coffee, meeting to start, etc)

While it could be as simple as just making a "formatted-for-mobile" screen, it would work much better as an app that could start getting the next question while you are answering the current one (no perceived network delays that way).   And I love how you can rapid-fire through the questions and it will learn about you, then use that data to help you.  The What's Hotter mechanism of idea comparing has some of these characteristics and would work well as a mobile app as well.  Bring it to us Tommy!

Clearing the Threshold of User Data Dissemination

In the early days of social networking, everyone was concerned that no users would enter their cell phone number ("why would I want everybody to have it and bother me?").  But people did put their cell phone numbers in.  Why?

Because it the gain by the user was > the price paid (price being time/money/frustration/risk). "You will join (and give up personal info) as long as the benefit is greater than the pain/price you pay to participate." --Matt Cohler, #8 employee at LinkedIn, #7 at Facebook, general partner Benchmark Capital (who spoke at the Social Ecosystem Summit) Eventually geo-location-based services will be the norm.  Things move from Socially awkward to socially required.  Matt told a story of how he was an early cell-phone user back in the 80s.  He lived in Asia and everyone had a cellphone, so if you didn't have one people said "what's wrong with you!?"  He then moved to the US and no one had a cellphone.  So they asked him "what's wrong with you, why do you have that?"  But eventually about 2 years later, everybody had a cellphone and the stigma became the norm.
