The one place Carmen consistently considers home (as she is constantly traveling) is the industrial warehouse that she bought and converted into her first center of operations. It’s not her dream house by any means, but it is a place where she made plenty of memories with her father figure & friends Zack and Ivy. It no longer is the center of operations but Carmen has retained it due to sentimental value attached to it.

“Yes I do, and the idea of it haunts me because I don’t want it to be reality.”

“If I could, I would like to gain sympathy. I would like to be a better man than my father and for that, I would need to sympathize with people and learn their energy. But I wouldn’t tell them that, I would at least have the knowledge of what they might go through”

“The day my boyfriend told me he was moving across the states. He had said we would keep in touch and try and work things out. But I blew up on him. I couldn’t let him see how heart broken I was. He never did keep in touch with me”

“We aren’t really warm. We are cold hearted snakes that just have one goal in common. Money, and honestly I like it like that. However it wasn’t the happiest childhood for me. We never really bonded to do cute, family traditions. Our traditions were telling our house keeper and chef to make what we wanted.”

the video is technically recorded in 720p, but there’s none of the clarity we'd expect today. it's dated from the early days of consumer high-definition camcorders, and it blurs the trees into an indistinct green backdrop. jinwook walks into focus and sits, legs crossed beneath him, guitar settling in his lap.
“testing testing,” he says to the camera. he laughs to himself and plucks his strings to check their tune, but the audio is too faint for the mic to pick up. if the camera’s sound were crisper, there would be audible birds and rustling from the forest behind them. in reality, there is only a wash of white noise buzzing quietly beneath the recording.
from offscreen, a girl’s incredulous laughter cuts into the audio. “you’re doing this on the ground?”
that’s minseo — she must be only ten years old here, but the shrill tone is unmistakable. jinwook only smiles up at his little sister, patting the clear space beside him. “come on~ there’s room for both of us in the frame, minnie.”
he wipes some sweat from his brow, keeping an eye on his figure in the viewfinder display. it’s hot and humid, but minseo had insisted on a collared shirt for the filming — to look good for their audience of 41 subscribers. mom helped them choose a complementary outfit for minnie too. jinwook’s just having a hard time getting her to show it. “don’t you want to show off your singing outfit? it’ll be easy, i promise.”
she scurries suddenly into the frame, cheeks round and flushed from the weather, a picture of innocence in her pastel sundress. jinwook perks up. she teeters in front of the lens and seems to weigh her options; in the next moment, she streaks away again.
“minnie..!! are you sure?” at her hesitance, jinwook tilts his head. “aw~ ...you had as much part in writing it as i did.” he squints at the lyrics sheet taped beneath his camera setup. her handwriting is prominent and careful beside his own scribbled ideas; the student teaching the teacher, so to speak. jinwook would be the first to admit that he’s a bit jealous of her natural skill at such a young age. minseo had been overflowing with ideas when they’d started this little project. all jinwook did was follow along and refine the song along the way.
“i’ll buy you candy?” his last line of defense. a beat of silence passes. rats. it feels sleazy to take the glory all for himself, even if only a handful of people will ever hear it. jinwook deflates into a pout. “will you still sing for me? i think i need your help.”
she must give non-verbal agreement, and this is where the edited youtube video fades in: a boy’s smile grows as he looks up to the invisible camera operator. the first few strums of his guitar. the intro seems to drag on a bar too long, and his expression shifts — an encouraging nod, an anticipatory lift of his eyebrows, and finally, pride.
minseo’s voice comes in behind the camera, heard loud and clear over jinwook’s guitar.

jinwook sounds muffled in comparison, but he doesn’t mind. the song is better-suited to his sister, with jinwook filling in harmonies and only a few lines of his own. still, it sounds best like this. it sounds best together.
