Their positive respond seemed to relieve him a little, he was worried they might have forgotten about him, or would not be very pleased to see him. It had not been too long since their last meeting, but.. Seeing how much Harmony grew... There was definitely something behind that little detail. There was the slightest bit of a purr coming from the dark hedgehog as Harmony hugged him, and he gladly returned that hug, patting Harmony’s head happily. 

`` That must’ve been quite the growth spurt then. `` Shadow answered amused as he looked back up to Volt, meeting the amethyst gaze of the fellow hybrid. He was just going in to shake Volt’s hands, but froze up just a tiny little bit as he got pulled into a hug. He relaxed just as quickly again though. It felt good to have a friend or two, and an occasional hug from said friends.

`` It’s good to hear you’ll be around.. But you’ll have to tell me all about it. I don’t suppose Harmony grew that much in a mere month? ``

Perhaps Shadow was a bit too curious? But.. He did care about the two and was genuinely interested in what happened during the time they were gone, even if it’s just to hear they were doing okay and didn’t disappear because of some kind of emergency..

The night was cold, quiet, you could feel it in the air that winter was fast approaching as a cold breeze blew through the streets filled with people trying to stay warm as they ran their errands, entertained their kids, drank their coffee or were just heading home. Ruby, however, had different intentions tonight. 

Dressed up in casual clothes, this time fancying a denim jacket with a few tears in them, the hedgehog made his way to one of the local bars, because what better way to distract you from your sorrows is there than drinking them away with some nice company? Well.. There were quite a few better ways, but tonight was simply a night in which Ruby wanted to indulge on getting lost in liquor for a while, just to shut up his head for once.

As he entered the bar, the thick smell of alcohol hit him right in the face, he could’ve sworn the scent alone was equivalent to downing a single drink.. Shaking off this odd feeling holding onto the hedgehog, he made his way to the bar where a quite familiar face was sitting. He announced his present with a quick pat on the back before taking a seat next to the jackal hybrid.

`` I hope you haven’t been drinking too much without me, have you? ``

And there he goes, ordering his first Whiskey of the night.

Who would’ve thought the dark hedgehog would come all this way to the ruins that Finnian called his home.. Just to bring him something to eat and check up on him? The deserted town, or whatever it used to be, felt so strange, no matter how often he’d wander through it in order to find the blind jackal. Where could he be..?

`` Finnian? Are you there? `` 

Ruby was not really one quickly bothered by an echo, but his voice sounded as hollow as this nearly abandoned place, like a ghostly howl echoing through the area, distorting his voice in an odd, uncomfortable way.. Finnian better be around here somewhere or for Chaos’ sake... Who knows where Finnian was wondering around right now? He better not be near the cliffs again, there was something extremely unsettling about knowing Finnian was wondering around so close to the edge..

`` I brought you something. Where are you? ``

T he only reason Shadow would travel to the empty ruins in the jungle was to get away from society, away from people, and just be on his own. Just him and his thoughts, able to roam as much and as long as he needed to before having to go back eventually.

He had a job to do, after all.

But for now, he didn’t want to think about that, or the struggles he was currently facing whenever he was sent off on a solo-mission. He felt his usual firm control over his power slip away, bit by bit. And that honestly troubled him a lot. 

Perhaps that was also part of why he enjoyed his own company, away from the busy cities and its overfilled streets..

Maybe he just needed some proper training again. To test how much control he actually still had. As far as he knew, there were no mobians around at the time, he thoroughly checked the area before settling down to brood. There should be no one around, and it should be safe for him to test it out.

And.. So he did, he channeled the power he was born with, trying to tame the storm-like energy that was swirling inside him. Trying to focus on just a simple, tiny blast. Nothing more, nothing less. Just a small, harmless blast. A soft shockwave of energy. That should be manageable. Chaos...

The dark hedgehog tried his best to concentrate on just that at first. The air around him seemed to crackle, filled with his Chaos energy. 

And.. Blast!

His body twisted in pain just as the energy exploded out of him, blasting away everything in a moderately large radius around him with a sound similar to an explosion. It was.. Exhausting, painful. But surely not as painful as seeing the destruction he caused. If he’d be forced to use this in an urban area.. Once the pain faded bit by bit, the hedgehog was left bowing on one knee, taking deep breaths. 

Damn it all.

Surely, a blast of this size must have given his location away.

Everyone has their ups and downs, their days where they’d like to frolic through a field of flowers, kick up some water from a nearby stream and then fall into the grass laughing, or their days where they’d like to do nothing more but curl up in bed with the blinds down and headphones on and drown out the noise of reality. Yeah, good days and bad days.

Just that.. Ruby couldn’t afford to have those bad days. He was supposed to be a soldier, the ultimate lifeform, someone who always stands tall. He couldn’t afford to rest and just.. Not push through whatever was troubling him. He couldn’t allow his bad days to get to him and bring him down. He had to be ready to face whatever the world may throw at him. However...

This kind of lifestyle gets.. Tiring.. Exhausting.. Draining.. 

The bad days pile up, further and further until you feel like they’re reaching the sky, threatening to collapse upon you as they cast a gloomy shadow on you. All you need is one particularly worse day and it all comes clashing down on you. Ruby was close to that limit, not quite there yet, but it was still just a tiny bit obvious that he might not be in the best mental place currently.

Thus why he found himself on the edge of a forest, surrounded by colorful flowers and picking the prettiest ones out of the ground. It was a way to cope, to distract himself from the cloud hanging over his head. He had discovered this place quite a while ago as he was out on a very long.. Walk. This place was good, it was isolated, quiet and peaceful, a perfect place to brood and keep himself occupied with something that wouldn’t hurt him.

Though, this spot didn’t seem to be as secluded as he imagined.. He had never run into another person before around here, but this time something felt different. Was it the sun gently warming the ground below that might have lured someone else to this spot? Or perhaps the view of the flowers had caught someone’s interest? Either way, he felt like he wasn’t alone this time..
