oliver and kenji! oliver is a werewolf just full of anxiety, and kenji is his sweet dragon boyfriend helping him move past his trauma.

ok ok im already redoing kenji n oliver

now kenji’s a wildlife rehabber- blackbird hollow is surrounded by woods and critters wander into town or get shot or hit by cars all the time. his workplace is pretty small, but well put-together, but far out enough that folks from other towns bring their wounded wildlife to other centers.

oliver was wandering around the woods, and a hunter shoots him by accident and reports it to kenji’s center. so kenji and a couple coworkers go searching for a wounded ‘bear’ and find oliver laying in a clearing, unconscious, covered in blood. obv, being from a monster town, they recognize him as a werewolf and very quickly take him in.

they leave him in their werewolf-specific habitat, an enclosed human-appropriate room with an outdoor fenced area attached. it’s very cozy. kenji is a very calming presence, so they leave him to talk to this giant wolf when he wakes up after surgery. he’s terrified and nude and heavily medicated and unused to strangers, so he kinda just cowers in a corner for a few days.

werewolves recover from injury pretty quickly, so he’s healed after like a week, and that’s the first time he actually talks to kenji. he’s confused as to why ken’s not scared of him, but he likes it, yknow. he’s not used to being treated well, and kenji’s brought him comfy clothes and blankets and good food.

once oliver starts talking, they get pretty close, and kenji offers him a place to stay rather than going back to the woods. oliver accepts- he’s kinda... not fallen in love, but kenji’s his first real friend and he’s just a big puppy dog for him. kenji fixes up his spare room and gives him that blanket he’s been working on.

oliver like, breaks down a little when he sees his room. at this point it’s been a few years since he’s had a space of his own, and he’s never really had a safe place. but he feels safe around kenji. he panics a little when kenji reveals he’s not human, as he never knew there were other critters than werewolves out there.

kenji starts taking oliver on little trips into town, introducing him to new people and new experiences- he loves the library, and the cafe’s chicken pot pie, and helping in the community garden. and he talks to strangers and doesn’t panic. he starts going to therapy- blackbird hollow has a really great therapist- and gets a part-time job at the library. he starts to recover from years of trauma and isolation.

it takes him a good year or so to start facing his feelings for kenji. love isn’t something he’s prepared to deal with at first, of course. he needs time, and kenji is happy to give it to him. kenji’s just, overjoyed, with how well oliver’s doing. he couldn’t be prouder. he’s slowly fallen for him, but he knows oliver needs to make the first move, and he waits for him.

just... oliver needs time and patience and help and love, and kenji is there to give it to him. and in turn, oliver gives kenji a calm space, someone to vent to, somewhere gentle and loving and so, so soft, despite everything.

“son of a bitch! why is this so hard?”  juniper’s grinning, but there’s a manic look to her as her frustration bubbles. the pumpkin in front of her has seen better days. she waves the knife in her hand in oliver’s general direction.  “i bet you’re good at this. what’s your secret?”

What do kenji & oliver's rooms look like or what do they decorate them with? What's oliver's favorite book from the library? What does the blanket look like that kenji gave to oliver? Oliver's favorite part of the garden? What does kenji like most about blackbird hollow? :D

kenji's furniture is very sleek and modern, all matchy red and black, but it's always covered in stuffed animals, books on animals, and half-finished art projects. his bed is at the back in the center with everything pushed up against the walls (same way he does it in animal crossing ayy) oliver's room is more, kinda rustic? woodsy? all wood furniture and a big, cozy bed to fit his wolfy form. it's covered in pillows and blankets, and pushed into the corner-he feels safer with his back to the wall. he has a nice bookshelf and a wide windowsill full of plants.

he loves plants- having something to take care of helps him take care of himself- so all his favorites are about plants, or fantasy novels. his favorite is a sorta,, comedy nonfiction about weird plants.

it's a knitted blanket, in varying shades of green. it's made of very fluffy soft yarn and has tassels on the ends. it's a little too small to cover him fully (he's a big boy even as a human) but he likes wrapping it around his shoulders. kenji'd been working on it during his free time at work, and oliver turned up just before it was done, so it seemed appropriate. kenji's given him other blankets, but this one is special.

the garden is pretty big- the whole town uses the food plants, and everyone's welcome to pick the flowers. it's tended to by a dryad so it's always in good health. there's one little corner, though, where the sun doesn't reach very well, so they built a little gazebo there instead. it's white paint is chipping in spots and ivy climbs its sides, and it has some little benches to hang out on. it's super quiet and peaceful and has a great view of the rest of the garden. oliver loves hanging out there.

kenji moved to blackbird hollow when he was about 12. his parents were both dragons, and they were sick of hiding themselves and their child, who was only just learning to control his form, in the human world. he loves that he can just,, fly around as a dragon and no one bats an eye. he loves hiking and fishing and swimming with the monster in the lake. he loves all his monster friends, and he loves that his dream job lets him stay in town, and that it's specialized to this town's weirdness. blackbird hollow has a lot of crafts going on, so when he was younger he apprenticed with a blacksmith, a baker, a potter, and a carpenter. he went into animal welfare, but had fun with them all and still has some skills. i guess his favorite thing is the freedom offered to him?

oliver’s favorite thing about blackbird hollow is that everyone is nice to him. even the mean people are nicer than the people he grew up with. it’d been a long, long time since he’d felt safe anywhere, and this town makes him feel safe.
