He stood behind his apartment’s main door, his back pressed against the smooth wood whilst a hand rest on the metal door knob. Suspicious, he squinted his eyes and looked at the peephole. “How long can you handle it?” He asked, his voice a bit loud so the other can hear him. “My bathroom is a little far from the door, so if you cannot handle it anymore, I’ll let you borrow a bucket. Call?”
she knew she was in trouble the moment she heard rumbling. her stomach never rumbled, not even when she was hungry but now she was caught too far from her friend's apartment but yet not close to the exit of the building and the feeling of bile creeping up her throat was getting stronger. moving fast, and mentally chiding herself for actually eating something her friend—whose cooking was rumored to burn holes through even the strongest of metals—had offered her; river banged on the first door she came across, calling out to whoever it was behind him and letting them know of her condition. it was rude of her, sure, but it'd be ruder if she just stood there and let her lunch out on the nicely carpeted floor instead. it felt like anguish, standing there with her hand clamped tightly over her mouth and not knowing if anyone was behind the door or not, but just as she was about to move ahead and find another candidate, a voice called out to her. to explain her relief at the moment would be impossible, even if she did find it just a bit annoying that she'd be offered a bucket...though a bucket would be better to throw up into than the bucket of a stranger, she thought. river quickly shook herself out of her thoughts though, removing her hand from her mouth and speaking hurriedly. "yes, a bucket would be fine but please just get it to me because i'm honestly about to puke right this second."

there’s a sheet of sarcasm that coats her laughter, a smile formed wide against her lips, though it’s far from anything pleasant. deprived of the joy in her usual curve. “you of all people, you’re honestly asking me that?” she parts her lips, mouth hung open as if so to speak, but she quickly snaps it shut while lowering her gaze. there’s a slow shake of her head before she looks up with a shrug of her shoulders. “y’know what i’m honestly starting to question it myself. why is family so important, when i’m apparently not even important to family?” her words are ended with yet another bitter fabrication of a smile, and a turn of her heels as she quickly heads for the door.
the bitter response isn't one she'd expected, the question had been asked out of genuine curiosity, as a way for river to figure out her own meaning of family even. but there'd be no clarity of meanings now. there was only her standing in a now empty living, mouth ajar and mind scurrying to figure out where such bitterness could have come from. a quick shake of the head freed her from her mind and returned her to reality and without any more hesitation she sun on her heels and headed after her sister, venturing past the open door and into the night's cold in nothing more than her sleep wear and cotton ankle socks. the snow on the ground soaked through her socks and left an uncomfortable wet, cold feeling on her feet but she ignored it and pushed forward till she had her sister in her sights more; her pace increased from there on, reaching out and grabbing hold of her sister's wrist when she was within range. river kept her grip firm, which itself was a feat considering her sister's wild thrashing and river's lack of upper body strength, or any strength whatsoever. "i'm sorry!" she screamed into the night, her voice fighting to over power the varying noises of the city. "i didn't mean it that way...you know you're important me to! you know it's always been you, family, before anything ever. i was just being dumb, i'm sorry..."
