"N-No..." He whispered and hid behind a plant that was near the door.
The sound of an explosion startled Aiko, causing her to look outside of the gazebo to see sparkles of color rain down from the sky. In the distance, across the rice fields and houses were bright lights illuminating the town and chatter loud enough to be heard.
A festival? At a time like this?..Well, it is summer, so I guess that makes sense.
The teen sat back down on the bench and watched the display of fireworks from a distance, admiring the variety of shapes and colors splattered in the night sky. She remembered a time when her parents were still alive, and her brother was able to move around freely, they would walk down the street of stalls featuring games and food. Her mother would also help her wear pretty yukatas for the occasion. Her favorite being a dark blue yukata decorated with lilies and lines of yellow.
Sweet glazed caramel apples, salty yakisoba, goldfish swimming in a pouch of water, and a game where her father won a prize for both them. Such a warm, happy moment...Oh, how she wished she could experience it again.
@fxlsificxtion: "Hm? If that's the case there will be some days I can't create earthquakes."
“But I want to control my shadow now. I want to get better now. Besides, Shou-chan will make fun of me again for falling behind.” He huffed.

Screams like a little girl. "W-Wha-!"
“But it’s so pretty! It would be a shame to cut it.”
Most students spend their after school days in the gym or the field, practicing for upcoming sport competitions or cultural events, while some would hang out after school at arcades or the mall. That was the norm, yet here he was, sitting at a table inside the air conditioned library, his pencil tapping the wood as if it were a drum, and staring out the window.
He spotted a few of his friends on the soccer and baseball team performing stretches and making laps, sweating under the sun. It must be nice. What was he doing inside? Studying, and then it was more school work and studying at the cram schools his mom is putting him through. He would complain, but the strict rules hammered into his head prevented him from doing so.
You can’t go to a good college like Tokyo or Waseda if you don’t pass your exams and aim for the top. My son needs to stand out against the rest. Sports takes away your time to study, and the sun will ruin your perfect white skin. You just need to focus on school and get a high paying job. Nothing else.
That was all he needed for life, but he couldn’t help but think there was something in life he was missing. The thrill of adventure and fun. That was what he craved for. It would definitely go against his parents’ wishes, but he wanted to feel free like a canary flying around in a cage, flapping its wings against the bars.
I want to live.
This was number 26. The fifth one this month. It was never-ending, but he could understand why they liked Asahi and wanted to send their feelings out to him.
“C-Can you please give this to Amachi-kun? I would give it to him myself, but I’m too nervous,” the girl fumbled with her words and blushed bright red as she handed Tohru the letter. It was similar to all the other letters given to him. A cutesy envelope with hearts or characters or a simple white one with a heart-shaped sticker to seal it closed.
After the girl gave him the message, the boy looked down at the letter, and let out a sigh as he grabbed his bag and headed down to the shoe lockers. While walking, thoughts about Asahi started to pop up in his mind.
Asahi deserved everything. A good life, a lovely wife, and a heartwarming family. That is what Tohru thought would make the other happy, and it’s nice to see there are girls at their school willing to confess their feelings to the heir of a yakuza family. It meant that they were willing to love him despite his background...or they want to be with him for status, power and wealth.
Tohru found it difficult to understand the optimistic way of thinking some people have in this world because of the way he was brought up and exposed to the dark side of reality. Love from a fairy tale didn’t exist in Tohru’s book. If he had been any other person, they would think the girl was innocent and wouldn’t hurt Asahi. However, cruel people do exist, especially within the ones seen as sweet as her.
Asahi deserved everything, but to have a successful and happy life, he didn’t need a girl who could stab him in the back. He didn’t need someone fake. The letter in his hand crumpled from the pressure. Tohru’s fist hovered over the trashcan near the vending machines and hesitated.
They don’t know Asahi as I do. I know him better, he thought to himself. But that’s unfair, isn’t it? I sound selfish for not letting others see the true side of Asahi. That side of Asahi...I like it more than the mask he wears in front of people. The one where reputation plays a role. I want people to see his lazy, sarcastic and whiny part. The genuine smile and everything.
But at the same time...
The letter fell into the trashcan and moved some trash around to cover it up. He bit his bottom lip and stared down at the garbage with a frown, guilt swimming within his lilac eyes.
I don’t want Asahi to be taken away from me... I’m sorry. I’m so sorry for being selfish. I don’t like this ugly feeling. It’s disgusting. I wish I didn’t feel this way and let your feelings be known, but I can’t do it...I’m sorry.
This was number 26. The fifth one this month. It was also the fourteenth one thrown away.
