"You didn't get that urge you get? You know, to do something silly?" The large 28ft whale shark mermaid glanced at Ace. Sedna smirked waiting to hear his answer.

"Yeah, that urge? Hits me all the time, y'know? Like, why not do something wild just 'cause it feels right? I ain't one to sit still when there's fun staring me in the face. Life's way too short for boring days on the sea."

He shifted his stance a bit and grinned wider. "If that silly feeling's got you too, Sedna, then let's go for it right now. No holding back! We can chase whatever crazy idea pops up and turn it into a real adventure. Sound good? I'm all in if you are let's make today worth remembering!"

"Besides, the best moments always start with that little spark. So what're you thinking? Spill it and we'll dive straight in."

The group crept through the dimly lit corridors of the corrupt Navy officer’s mansion, shadows stretching long across the polished floors. A soft giggle slipped out as he scratched the back of his head, freckles shifting with his easy grin. “You worry too much, Nami. I can be stealthy when I wanna be.”

Even as the claim hung in the air, he drew his arm back and slammed his fist straight through the nearest wall. Wood and plaster burst apart with a deafening crack, debris raining down around them. Without missing a beat, he punched another hole clean through the next barrier, widening the path with each powerful strike.

“This way’s a straight shot to that treasure room you were after,” he called back, voice light and cheerful. “Pretty smart, right? Heh heh!”

The sharp wail of alarms suddenly ripped through the mansion, red emergency lights flashing wildly overhead.

He threw his head back and let out a bright, carefree laugh. “Aah, Nami! Sounds like the party’s just gettin’ started!”

"Looked like you were pretty friendly with her," Ace said casually, watching as Evan walked away from the other without seeing them. They'd timed their approach to make sure their ex wouldn't notice them; they didn't have the heart to talk to her yet. What they did have a heart for, apparently, was nosing into her business.

Chris blinked, eyes darting between Ace and a now-leaving Evan. His hand rubbed his chin. What was his deal? He had seen Ace a few times but it was usually pretty nice, though it was interesting how he was always around when Evan stopped by. Now any other time, the baker would be ready to question their intentions with his friend.

Considering their experience with the man trying to bring her back for experimentation. But Quas let him know the man wasn't dangerous. So why was Ace so forward with him about Evan?

"I mean we are friends," Chris began. "So yeah I'd be friendly with her. Is there something wrong with that?"

A teasing smile spreads across his face.

"What are ya interested in her? Like a crush?"

I'm not a little girl, Professor.

   Diversify Who 1/?: Ace McShane, Afro-Guyanese.

Here's the first instalment of my Diversify Who series, starting with my favourite companion, Ace.

When her mother was born, there were a lot of immigrants coming into Britain from the Caribbean, families of the men fighting in the war. Most of these immigrants were coming from places like Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago. Second- and third-generation British citizens descended from these families were a big part of the Punk scene in London in the 1970s and 1980s.
