There aren’t a lot of them still alive, Manny was starting to realize. At first, their group seemed so large. So many of them unfamiliar and nameless, so many of them needing to be fed-- The move from station to Penn had made Manakel feel like cow, stomping alone with the rest of the unwieldy herd. In the past few days, though, Manakel had started to recognize the people around them, and, somehow, that ruined the illusion of size. The group-- and, thus, the world --had become terrifyingly small to them in the span of a few days, and that left Manny claustrophobic. Could they really be spending the rest of their life with only these people?
Their mind rejected the very concept. There had to be more survivors out there and, barring that, there were probably countless group members that had simply missed since the move. Yes, they had told themselves, there would always be new faces.
They just hadn’t expected the next ‘new face’ to be so familiar.
At first, it was just a flash of something in the corner of Manakel’s eyesight. A familair to curve of the jaw on someone who moved like someone they’d seen before. They’d tried to ignore it; In the first few days, everyone had seemed familiar at first. That guy a classmate, that one a professor... Manny had long since stopped getting their hopes up.
But then there was the voice, the first known quantity Manny had in days and when they turned toward it, the tattoos registered before the face did.
Maya.
Manakel leapt to their feet, a happy cry starting and stuttering in their throat. When they had seen their apartment building, collapsed in on itself, and hadn’t seen Maya milling around with the rest of the tenants, Manakel had written their roommate off as dead. But there she was, looking as tough and pissed off as ever.
“Oh my god,” Manny said, rushing to Maya like they were old friends. “I thought-- I mean, if anyone would be able to survive all this it would be you, but I seriously thought you were dead, Maya. Are you okay? Can I hug you? Do you need anything?”
